National Girls Football Finals at King Power Stadium, Leicester - Sunday 22nd May 2016

Having previously won the Burton, County and Regional competitions, the U11 girls football team competed in the National Football Finals, representing the Midlands. We were given a brand new kit for the day and were asked to enter the stadium through the players entrance and walk out onto the pitch through the tunnel. Over 80 people came to support the children including staff, governors, friends, family, other children from school and even Father Stephen!

St Modwen's 1 - 0 Easington (North) - A single goal from Emily and a brilliant penalty save from Milena got us off to a great start in our group.

St Modwen's 0 - 0 Bishop Gilpin (South West) - A very tight and tense game ended with a goalless draw, despite us creating the better chances.

St Modwen's 1 - 1 Broadstone (South East) - After going behind to an early goal, the first time this had happened all season, the girls fought back brilliantly, showing great character and equalised through Prabhdeep.

Semi Final

St Modwen's 0 - 1 St Edward's (North) - Despite dominating possession and going close on a few occasions, we lost the match by a single goal in extra time.

This meant that the girls finished in joint 3rd place overall, which out of over the 300 schools that entered is a remarkable achievement and a first for the St Modwen's Football Team. We are all so proud of the girls who were exceptional once again.

Many congratulations to Isabel, Prabhdeep, Erin, Carly, Milena, Rebeca, Nicola and Emily.

After finishing in 7th place in the league St Modwen's competed in the Fair Play Cup with the other teams placed 5th-11th.

St Modwen's 2 - 0 Eton Park - An own goal and a well taken goal from Oliwier got us off to a great start.

St Modwen's 0 - 2 Holy Rosary - Against tough opponents, the players were unlucky to lose the next match.

St Modwen's 0 - 0 Anglesey - A very close match with chances for both teams ended goalless, a fair result.

St Modwen's 0 - 0 Christ Church - After dominating possession and creating many chances, somehow we drew the last match.

A super effort from the team, with key players missing and with several children making their first appearance for the school team, we did very well and finished 3rd overall.

Football Match vs. Eton Park - Thursday 11th February 2016

In the last league game of the season we played an away match against Eton Park. St Modwen's played some fantastic attacking football with Isabel, Alfie and Emily causing all sorts of problems for the opposition. We took the lead early on when Isabel collected the ball on the edge of the area, beat her defender and fired the ball into the bottom corner. Emily then doubled the lead, firing past the goalkeeper after a great cross from Prabhdeep. Eton Park were then awarded a very controversial penalty, the ball hit Isabel in the chest but the referee gave the penalty which Eton Park scored. However, straight from kick off Alfie played the ball to Isabel who fired an unstoppable shot into the top corner to restore the lead. Eton Park scored a second penalty late on but we held onto the lead.

Final score: 3-2. Player of the match - Isabel.

Table Tennis County Finals - Wednesday 10th February 2016

After finishing in the top four at the previous table tennis competition, Isabel and Prabhdeep went on to compete in the county finals for Staffordshire. The girls played several matches and the standard of table tennis was remarkable. Isabel, did not lose a single match, whilst Prabhdeep only lost one, which was against Isabel!

The results meant that Isabel was crowned county champion, with Prabhdeep as the runner up! This also means that St Modwen's have the two best female under 11 table tennis players in Staffordshire! Isabel will now go on to compete at the National competition in April.

Huge congratulations must go to both of the girls!

Gymnastics Competition - Wednesday 10th February 2016

In the team events Year 3/4 got the bronze medal, whilst Year 5/6 were awarded silver.

Individually, Kirstie won bronze in the vault, whilst Chloe won gold in both the floor and vault competition. Well done girls!

Football vs. Outwoods - Friday 5th February 2016

After a long break the St Modwen's football team played a league match against Outwoods who were already guaranteed a top 3 finish. Both teams started brightly, creating a few chances each but it was Outwoods who started the scoring. We fought back brilliantly and played some unbelievable football with Alfie sending a 'rabona' down the line to Isabel, who back heeled it through a defenders legs to Emily, but unfortunately her shot was well saved. It took until after half time to find the equaliser thanks to our super sub Prabhdeep. She ran through onto a through ball and fired a shot under the goalkeeper. Moments later we took the lead as Nicola fed the ball through to Prabhdeep who unselfishly crossed the ball to Emily, who fired it into the corner. Late on in the game, Outwoods brought on their start player who scored two superb individual goals, he nearly added another but Asten pulled off a remarkable save to keep the shot out. This was definitely the best performance of the season and the team should be very proud of themselves.

Final score: 2-3 Players of the match - Alfie and Prabhdeep.

The girls were highly praised by the other adults at the venue, not only for their ability but also their conduct too. Well done Isabel, Prabhdeep, Rebeca, Carly, Milena, Emily, Nicola, Molly and Maia.

Y5: Morgan, Dervla and Ella

Y6: Harvey, Carly and Maria

Football Friendly vs. William Shrewsbury - Friday 6th November 2015

On a very cold and wet evening we played a friendly match against a very strong William Shrewsbury team. After a bit of a slow start in which we conceded two early goals, Emily latched onto a super through ball from Thomas to lift the ball over the opposition goalkeeper and into the net. We then pressed for the equaliser with Alfie hitting a screamer of a shot just wide before hitting the post following a great passing move. We finally got the equaliser, although quite controversially when Thomas hit a long range shot that the opposition goalkeeper dropped on the line. The referee gave the goal but goal line technology would have helped with the decision! Unfortunately, William Shrewsbury took advantage of our tired legs late on and scored 2 more goals.

Final score: 2-4. Players of the match - Alfie and Thomas.

Dodgeball Tournament - Thursday 5th November 2015

Congratulations to the Dodgeball A and B teams who competed in the tournament. The A team played brilliantly, winning 3 games and only losing 1. They finished as winners in the group and have progressed to the finals which will be played later in the year.

Well done to all of the children who took part: Alfie R, Asten, Thomas, Erin, Joshua, Harvey, Prabhdeep, Paul, Isabel, Olivia, Hubert, Kevin, Blessa, Jack, Ayaan, Alan, Nicola, Queeta and Carly.

Football League Week 3 - Friday 16th October 2015

Game 1 - St Modwen's v Winshill Village

The first game of the evening saw the St Modwen's team produce their best performance of the season so far. The back two of Nicola and Thomas were absolutely solid and let no one past, whilst the midfield of Isabel, Prabhdeep, Alfie and later on Ayaan were faultless. Emily chased everything up front and the Winshill Village defence found it hard to cope with her speed and skill. St Modwen's took the lead through a superb piece of play between Isabel and Alfie before Alfie picked the ball up at the edge of the area and planted a shot into the top corner. Emily then capped off a fine team move to make it 2-0 before Isabel scored with a thunderous shot that not only sent the ball into the back of the net but the opposition goalkeeper ended up in there too! Final score: 3-0. Player of the match - Alfie.

Game 2 - St Modwen's v Holy Rosary

Despite having already played a match and feeling a little tired from such a brilliant performance, the team went back out and put in a marvellous first half display. Some heroic defending from Thomas and Erin kept the scores level before some superb midfield play from Alfie, Isabel and Ayaan set up Emily to score a wonderful team goal from the edge of the area. Holy Rosary then hit back with two quick goals, the second an absolute screamer from the half way line. Asten in goal then produced a stunning save to keep the score at 2-1. After the break, Holy Rosary took advantage of our tired legs and scored a third goal. Final score: 1-3. Player of the match - Erin.

Throughout the competition, coaches commented extremely positively on how the girls worked as a team, as well as the individual talent they showed. Congratulations girls!

Squad: Prabhdeep, Carly, Erin, Nicola, Isabel, Emily, Milena, Rebeca

On Wednesday afternoon, coaches from Burton Albion in the community came into school to do an afternoon of training for all of the girls from years 4, 5 and 6. The girls had a fantastic time and the female coaches praised their effort and behaviour.

Football League Week 2 - Friday 2nd October 2015

Game 1 - St Modwen's v Victoria

In our first ever home game, we met a strong Victoria side. In a very even first half, St Modwen's took the lead through a superb solo effort from Emily, who beat 2 players before rifling a left footed shot into the top corner. A great save from Janitha in goal kept the score at 1-0 until half time. After the break, Victoria started strongly and scored 2 goals in quick succession. A superb ball down the line from Alfie R set up Emily, who ran through on goal and equalised with a superb shot into the corner. With the game destined to be a draw Victoria stole it with literally the last kick of the game. Final score: 2-3. Player of the match - Emily.

Game 2 - St Modwen's v Anglesey

Despite having already played a match and feeling a little deflated from the result the team went back out and put in a marvellous display against Anglesey. Some heroic defending from Thomas and Erin kept the scores level before some superb midfield play from Nicola, Isabel and Prabhdeep set up Emily to score a wonderful team goal from the edge of the area. There was then a brilliant moment in the match when Sheene, making his debut for the school team picked up the ball on the left and scored a tremendous goal from the edge of the area. The team held on to the lead and recorded our first win of the season. Final score: 2-0. Player of the match - Erin.

Open Football Tournament - Thursday 1st October 2015

Well done to the football team, who performed brilliantly in this competitive tournament.

St Modwen's 0 vs 1 Winshill Village

St Modwen's 0 vs 1 Oldfields A

St Modwen's 0 vs 0 Outwoods

St Modwen's 0 vs 1 Edge Hill A

St Modwen's 0 vs 2 William Shrewsbury A

Well done to Asten and Thomas who were joint players of the tournament. Asten for pulling off a string of excellent saves in goal and Thomas for an outstanding defensive performance.

Congratulations to the rest of the team: Isabel, Prabhdeep, Alfie R, Morgan, Harvey, Erin & Nicola

Football League Week 1 - Friday 25th September 2015

Game 1 - St Modwen's v Edge Hill 2

In our first game of the season, we met a very strong Edge Hill side who had won all of their games so far. Some heroic goalkeeping from Asten kept the scores level until the stroke of half time when Edge Hill scored two quick goals. After the break some superb play down the right from Prabhdeep set up Morgan who finished brilliantly from the edge of the box. Unfortunately, Edge Hill then took control of the game and scored three more stunning goals. Final score: 1-5. Player of the match - Asten.

Game 2 - St Modwen's v Christ Church

Despite having already played a match, the team continued to show the energy and determination that they showed in the first game. Some superb play between our captain Isabel and Emily set up Alfie and he was unlucky not to score. Emily then had a chance to break the deadlock after a superb run but her shot went inches wide. Against the run of play, Christ Church took the lead directly from a free kick. After the break, it was all St Modwen's again. Emily hit the bar with a looping header before Isabel dragged a shot just wide after a good run. Emily was then denied again by some brave goalkeeping before somehow, Christ Church scored a second goal. Alfie was then unlucky with a freekick that hit the side netting. After having all of the possesion, putting in a fantastic team performance and having countless shots on goal we were very unlucky not to win the match. Final score: 0-2. Player of the match - Alfie R

The team: Erin L, Erin W, Milena, Olivia, Maddy, Emily, Isabel, Amy and Prabhdeep.

Well done to the cricket team for excellent performances against two very difficult opponents. The first match was against William Shrewsbury, in which the team lost by 7 runs. The team: Maddy, Joshua, Thomas, Kevin, Amy, Prabhdeep, Jaideep and George.

A total of 5 teams took part in the Year 5/6 Burton and District Swimming Competition on Tuesday 24th March at Etwall Leisure Centre including: Edge Hill A and B, William Shrewsbury, St Modwens and All Saints Alrewas.

It was fantastic to see over 60 pupils having the opportunity to take part in a competition that requires specific facilities. All pupils were very enthusiastic, encouraging their peers as well as other schools during races. It was great to see experienced swimmers alongside those who have not been participating that long. Many were inspired by the level at which some swimmers were at.

The finals results were as follows:

1ST ALL SAINTS ALREWAS

2ND WILLIAM SHREWSBURY

3RD EDGE HILL A

4TH ST MODWEN'S

5TH EDGE HILL B

The St Modwen's team: Countney, Erin, Prabhdeep, Harvey, Jaideep, Nathaniel, Maddy and Evie.

Y3/4 Hockey Competition - Friday 13th March

In the annual competition at Shobnall, our Y3/4 hockey team competed well in what was for many of the children their first appearance in a school team. They enjoyed games against Holy Trinity, William Gilbert, Picknells and Alrewas.

The team: Morgan, Georgie, Emily, Zayna, Joel, Maria and Bryn.

Burton Albion v Newport County - Saturday 28th February

Due the success of the girls' football team, they were given the opportunity to be flag bearers at a Burton Albion match. Despite Burton losing 1-0, the team thoroughly enjoyed the experience. More pictures will follow when we receive the official photos.

Archery Competition - Tuesday 24th February

Congratulations to the archery team for finishing 3rd in an exciting new competition run by Premier Sports.

The team: Maks, James, Mersedesa, Morgan, Rianna, Molly, Dylan and Donzel.

Well done to Isabel, Milena, Erin L, Erin W, Dominik, Joshua R.M and Carly.

Bikeability - 14th & 15th of January

Children in Y6 took part in the Bikeability scheme, which aims to ensure children can bike safely on minor roads. The children were a credit to the school once again as the majority of children passed the level 2 stage.

Netball District Competition - Thursday 15th January

Well done to the netball team, who performed very well in this district competition at the Meadowside. The results were as follows:

St Modwen's 1-0 Winshill Village

St Modwen's 0-3 Oldfields

More netball fixtures are planned in the spring.

Staffordshire County Final at Rowley Park - Wednesday 26th November

Congratulations once again to the girls' football team. Due to their success the previous week, they qualified for the Staffordshire County finals to represent Burton and Uttoxeter. They performed brilliantly against top opposition!

St Modwen's 3-0 The Willow (Lichfield) - Two goals from Emily and one from Amy got us off to a great start.

St Modwen's 0-0 Fulfen (Burntwood) - A game in which we spent much of the game in the opponent's half.

St Modwen's 0-1 Featherstone (Wolverhampton) - It was an incredibly tight game. The girls were unlucky to lose 1-0.

St Modwen's 0-0 Hob Hill (Rugeley) - Against very tough opponents, the girls played out an even draw.

St Modwen's 3-0 Eaton Park (Stoke) - A very strong performance, with a goal from Maddy and two left-footed strikes from Emily.

The team have made the staff at our school very proud. With one goal conceded and six scored, they certainly showed themselves to be one of the top teams in the county!

Girls' Football Competition at St George's Park - Thursday 20th November

Congratulations to the girls' football team for finishing in 1st place in this extremely competitive competition. Around 20 teams from Burton and Uttoxeter took part.

In the group stages, we played four matches against four different schools:

St. Modwen's 2-0 Richard Wakefield

St. Modwen's 1-0 Holy Rosary

St. Modwen's 3-0 William Shrewsbury C

St. Modwen's 1-0 Yoxall

With some excellent football being played, we met William Shrewsbury B team in the semi-final. The team continued their good form and won 2-0.

In the final, we met William Shrewsbury A team (an excellent team who had recently beaten us in a friendly). It was William Shrewsbury who took the lead early on. However, the team bounced back with a goal scored by Amy. The game looked destined for penalties, until Emily S. slotted home in the final minutes of the match. It was a dramatic end to an excellent game, sparking celebratory scenes at the end.

Everyone at St Modwen's is very proud of the team. Well done to Emily S, Carly, Isabel, Milena, Erin W, Erin L, Amy, Prabhdeep, Maddy & Emily R.

Hockey Competition at Robert Sutton - Tuesday 11th November

Two teams entered this competition on a very cold night at Robert Sutton. The A team had a tricky start against Outwoods, losing to the eventual winners. However, they recovered to win the rest of their games.

The B team finished the night undefeated without conceding a goal! More fire power up front would have seen the team progress.

Despite neither team making it to the final, both teams can be proud of how they performed on the night. A special thanks must go to Zoe Ridley for coaching the teams and helping us to enter two teams.

Well done to: Emily R, Jaideep, Nathaniel, Maddy, Amy, Erin, Emily S, Carly, Isabel, Harvey, Paul, Hubert, Kacper, George, Morgan & Prabhdeep.

St George's Park Visit - Wednesday 5th November 2014

On November 5th, 32 children went to St George's Park to receive coaching during the important visit of UEFA President, Michel Platini. He was joined by Greg Dyke (FA Chairman) and David Gill (Ex-Man Utd Chief Executive). The children were delighted to meet them. The children were selected due to their 'excellent attitudes' in coaching sessions at St Modwen's. We were the only school there.

See the following link, our children feature in the video of Platini (1 minute into the video). The video also appeared on Sky Sports News!

For many of the children, it was their first time visiting St George's Park.

Weightlifting World Record Holder - Saturday 25th October 2014

Elena in Y5 has followed in her mum's footsteps to become a world record holder in weightlifting for her age group. In order to enter the Gold Cup competition, you have to have a world record. Elena managed to achieve this in the gym in the dumbbell press. On Saturday 25th October, Elena opened the Gold Cup competition in front of about 70 people from USA, Finland, Scotland, France and England. Elena got her 2nd world record of a dumbbell press, lifting 6.8kg.

Elena then decided she wanted to do another lift. It was decided she would attempt a bench press with feet in the air. Elena went onto the platform after having a 5 minute practice. She had never done this lift before and managed to lift 14kg!

Well done Elena, the staff and children at St Modwen's are very proud of you.

Table Tennis Competition - Monday 20th October 2014

24 children represented the school in this competition at De Ferrers. As a team, plenty of wins were picked up. The top four competitors would go through to the county finals. Isabel from Y5 made the top four, meaning that she will go on to compete at county level in January. Well done to Isabel and to the whole team!

Table tennis squad: Kacper K, Maddy, Isabel, Prabhdeep, Jaideep, Amy, Carly, Paul, Erin L, Jack W.F, Jessica, Jesse, Nathaniel, Milena, Joshua, George, Emily, Jack H, Charlie J, Hubert, Janitha, Dominik, Poppy & Delma.

A picture of some of the team can be seen below:

Girls' Football - Friendly against Outwoods - Friday 17th October 2014

The St Modwen's girls' football team have been receiving weekly coaching since the start of the year. This was their first chance to put their skills into action.

The team started well, with Amy running down the right, setting up Emily S to score in the bottom left

The sport stars below are Roxy Keshavarz (England Squash), followed by Chantelle Cameron (GB Boxer).

The children also got the opportunity to try new sports. One of these sports was rowing...

Sports Day (Tuesday 17th June)

On a day where the weather was very kind to us, every child in the school had the chance to compete on the track. The children did brilliantly and we are proud to have such fantastic athletes attending our school. Well done to the Green team ('Mark') who finished the day with the most points. The trophy will be presented during the Y6 leavers' awards night.

Thank you parents for support on the day!

Swimming Gala (Friday 13th June)

This year's gala was once again an excellent competition, with some of the best swimmers from around Burton in their age groups. A difference this year was that competitors could win medals for second and third as well as first.

The following people managed to get onto the podium. Congratulations!

Jaideep - Y6 25m Butterfly - 3rd place

Phoebe - Y6 25m Backstroke - 3rd place

Harvey - Y4 25m Front crawl - 3rd place

Evie - Y5 25m Backstroke - 2nd place

Harvey - Y4 25m Backstroke - 3rd place

Adelaide - 25m Breastroke - 1st place

Well done to these competitors, as well as the rest of the team (see names below). We are all really proud of you!

Team: Morgan, Dervla, Harvey, Carly, Roisin, Prabhdeep, Jaideep, Charlie J, Jack, Evie, Poppy, Phoebe, Adelaide, Joe & Michael

Kwik-Cricket District Final (Wednesday 11th June)

The St Modwen's cricket team was a real credit to the school as they played some outstanding cricket. After losing narrowly to Oldfields in the first match, we went on to beat Anglesey and Rykneld (two strong teams). What was most impressive was how the team organised themselves on the field, encouraging each other along the way.

Jay Ridgway, who now plays for Derbyshire, deserves a special mention for his contribution in the matches. He was a fantastic captain and will be missed next year, along with the rest of the players moving on in Y6: Harrison, Ben, Reiss, Allam, Harry & Joe. Well done to Josh and George in Y5, who are sure to be representing the school again next year.

Kwik-Cricket Runners Up (Tuesday 20th May)

The cricket team have taken part in their first competition of the year, finishing second to Edge Hill. The first game was against Victoria. After a tough start, we looked unlikely to be able to win the match. However, in one of the final overs, Allam bowled two players out, meaning that we won by 2 runs! We then went on to lose narrowly to Edge Hill in the final game. Well done to the team: Jay, Allam, Harry, Joe, George, Joshua, Harrison, Reiss & Ben.

The district finals will be on the first week back after half term (information to follow).

Tag Rugby County Finals (Saturday 17th May)

Well done to the tag rugby team for competing with the best teams in the county. The games were tight and despite not going through to the next stage, the team competed strongly. We are all extremely proud of the team: Emily, Maddy, Harry, Ben, Kian, Joe, Michael, Ethan & Jay. A picture of the team can be seen below from the March competition.

Y4 Tennis Winners (Thursday 15th May)

Two teams were entered into this tournament, such was the talent pool in Y4. They both played really well, resulting in both teams winning their groups and getting to the final to play each other. In the end, it was St Modwen's A who triumphed, although the games were very close indeed.

Team A - Millie, Prabhdeep, Jack & Hubert

Team B - Isabel, Milena, Harvey & Josh

All 8 children will be receiving coaching for the Staffordshire School Games county final (date TBC). The strongest 4 (2 boys and 2 girls) will be chosen by the tennis coach to represent Burton & Uttoxeter.

Well done to all involved, you did the school proud!

Tag Rugby County Finalists (Thursday 10th April)

In yet another tag rugby tournament, the team were aiming to make it 3 competition wins a row, which would lead to the county finals in May (level 3 of the School Games).

Game 1 was a close match against Windsor Park. It finished 4-3 to St Modwen's.

Game 2 saw us run out 5-0 winners against Thomas Russell.

Game 3 was a very entertaining 4-4 draw against Ryecroft.

Results meant we topped the group, sending us through to the semi-final.

Semi-final v Oldfields B - In a hard fought game, the team gave it their all and came out 6-3 winners! This guaranteed our place at the county finals, as the top 2 teams in the district qualify.

Final v Oldfields A - Another tight game, except this time we ended up on the losing side. Two very strong teams are representing Burton and Uttoxeter in May! Well done to the team for getting there (pictures of the team can be seen below under previous tournament write ups).

KS2 Swimming Gala at John Port - Wednesday 9th April

Well done to the team!

Y5/6 Hockey Tournament at Shobnall - Friday 4th April

Like our Y3/4s the week before, the team was able to reach the quarter finals!

Match 1 - St Modwen's 1-0 Rolleston - Jay scored the only goal in what was a very positive opening performance.

Match 2 - St Modwen's 0-0 William Gilbert - This was a tight match between two strong teams.

Match 3 - St Modwen's 1-0 Alrewas - Jay scored once more in a 1-nil win against a team challenging for top place in the group.

Match 4 - St Modwen's 3-0 Holy Rosary - Goals scored by Jaideep and Joe (x2). This put us top of the group and into the quarter finals!

We found ourselves up against Shobnall in the quarter final. It was a tight game which ended up going to penalty flicks. It was a cruel way to end the game, as we ended up going out on sudden death.

Well done to the team for reaching the quarter-finals: Nathaniel (GK), Harry, Amy, Emily, Ben, Jay, Joe, Ethan & Jaideep.

Starbuck Cup Winners! (Tuesday 1st April)

In this annual local competition, the team did not disappoint, coming away with the trophy!

The long grass forced us to change our style of play, but the team soon got used to it. It was great to see Reiss return to the team after his operation.

Game 1 – St Modwen’s 3-1 Victoria

Against a much improved Victoria, Harry, Joseph & Reiss bagged the goals. Off to a good start.

Game 2 – St Modwen’s 4-0 Belvedere

Jay got us off to a great start within 30 seconds as the team surged forward, catching out our opponents. Kacper then added a second, before Jay scored another goal. The match wasn’t over, as there was still time for Harry to score from the spot.

Game 3 – St Modwen’s 4-1 Eton Park

In a winner-takes-all match, the team did not disappoint, going into a 2-nil lead by half time. However, Eton Park came out strong and managed to pull a goal back. Fortunately, the team was able to push on and grab 2 more goals. Scorers: Kian x2, Harry & Jay.

This meant the team retained the Starbuck Cup!

Play Leaders

On 1st April, Elenore, Laura & Maciej in Y6 started to train the Y5s to become play leaders. They trained Angela and Delma. They taught them the basic skills of how to be a good play leader. The Y5s did really well and with a few more steps, they will be ready to become full play leaders. Elenore, Laura & Maciej will be training Y5s regularly on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

by Elenore (Y6)

Y3/4 Hockey Tournament at Shobnall - Friday 28th March

The team was able to reach the quarter finals in a competition containing around 20 teams! The team that knocked us out in the quarter finals went on to win the competition.

Match 1 - St Modwen's 1-0 William Shrewsbury

A solid opening performance saw Isabel score the winner, in a match that was spent mostly in the opposition's half.

Match 2 - St Modwen's 0-2 Picknalls

This was a tough match in which we were beaten by the better team.

Match 3 - St Modwen's 0-0 Rangemore

Given how other results had gone, we needed a point to go through to the quarter finals. We spent much of the game on the attack, but couldn't grab the winning goal. We got the point we needed though.

Quarter Final - St Modwen's 0-1 Picknalls

Unfortunately, the draw placed us against the team that had already beaten us in the group stage. It was an improved performance by ourselves, but this was not enough to progress to the semi-finals. Picknalls were a strong team and showed this by winning the whole competition. Who knows where we would have reached if we had been drawn against another team.

Well done to our team for reaching the quarter-finals: Morgan (GK), Hubert, Prabhdeep, Carly, Millie, Isabel, Paul, Emily & Harvey. Check out the picture below, taken with the Burton Mayor and Mayoress.

Tag Rugby Winners! (Tuesday 25th March)

In a tournament containing 5 teams, the team played fantastically, coming away with the winners’ medals and trophy. Remarkably, every single member of the team scored a try!

Game 1 – St Modwen’s 17-0 Anglesey

Scorers: Ben x 5, Jay x4, Harry x4, Ethan x2, Michael & Kian

Game 2 – St Modwen’s 10-0 Holy Rosary

Scorers: Jay x3, Emily x2, Joe, Ethan, Maddy, Harry x2

Game 3 – St Modwen’s 4-1 Outwoods

Scorers: Kian x2, Ben & Michael

Well done to the team! It is rare to see tag rugby games finish as one-sided as they did, which goes to show how well they played. The District Final is pencilled in for Thursday 10th April.

Netball Competition at Paget - Thursday 13th March 2014

In a competition containing 8 teams, our netball team finished as runners up!

Well done to the team:

Ben S, Laura, Magda, Maciej (Y6)

Maddy (Y5)

Millie, Milena, Prabhdeep, Carly (Y4)

Thanks again to Gabbie for coaching the team.

Match 1 v Edge Hill - We lost 1-0 in our opening group game, but the team showed plenty of promise.

Match 2 v Anglesey - We won this game 3-1 with goals from Laura and two from Magda!

Match 3 v Windsor Park B - We won this game 3-0, with 2 goals from Harry and a goal from Prabhdeep.

This put us through to the final! Here we met Windsor Park A. It was an end-to-end game, in which we didn't take our chances but the opposition did. It finished 4-0 to Windsor Park who were worthy winners. Finishing aside, our team played well and were able to collect their silver medals with pride.

Britannia Cup Runners Up - Thursday 6th March 2014

The Britannia Cup is an annual event which includes the top four teams in the league. As we finished second in the league, we were aiming for a win. However, chances were delivered a blow when Ben and Joe were both ruled out due to injury and illness. This meant that Ethan W would make his debut and that Jack would make his second appearance.

Match 1 - Eton Park - 5-0 win

It was a great start from the boys, who played some wonderful passing football.

Match 2 - Tower View - 2-0 win

A vital win with two second half goals which put us into the final game against Edge Hill. Their results had mirrored ours exactly, so whoever won the last game would win the cup.

Match 3 - Edge Hill

Despite losing this game 2-0, the team played some excellent football at times. We just could not get the goals we needed. Well done to Edge Hill who were worthy winners on the night.

The team still have two cups up for grabs this year. The Starbuck Cup in April and the Ellis Shield in the summer term. Well done to Ethan for impressing on his debut for St Modwen's!

Table Tennis County Final - Monday 3rd March 2014

On the same night as the rugby tournament, Jess in Y6 played in her Table Tennis County Final at De Ferrers. The competition saw the best players in the county compete against each other. Understandably, competition was tough. Jess gave it her best shot and we are all extremely proud of her! Well done Jess!

Touch Rugby Winners - Monday 3rd March 2014

Well done to the rugby team for playing some outstanding rugby to finish in 1st place in this competition!

Match 1 - St Edwards - This one finished 1-1 in tries, with Ben getting ours.

Match 2 - Holy Rosary - 4-1 win. Jay bagged 2 tries, with Ben and Kian getting the other two.

Match 3 - St Edwards - 6-0 win. Jay scored 3, with Kian, Michael and Joe getting the others.

Match 4 - Holy Rosary - we scored 7 tries in the match. Jay and Michael both scored 3, with Emily scoring the other.

This small tournament sets us up well for one at the end of the month at Anglesey.

St Modwen's v Abbots Bromley School - Netball - Thursday 13th February 2014

To help our netball team prepare for future challenges, a fixture was arranged with Abbots Bromley School. Both the team and staff were impressed by the venue and the hospitality of the hosts.

The match began with some excellent passing moves by Abbots Bromley, as they moved into the lead. The quality of the opposition was clear, but it did not faze our team. Into the second half we began to get on top, defending with determination and putting together some fantastic passing moves of our own. We were able to narrow the score with goals from Ben, Laura and Milena. By the final whistle we were only a few goals behind!

We are excited about the potential of our team, which contains players from Y4 & 5 as well as our Y6s.

Well done to the team:

Ben S, Laura, Magda, Maciej (Y6)

Maddy (Y5)

Millie, Milena, Prabhdeep, Carly (Y4)

A special thanks must go to Ben and Millie's sister Gabbie for coaching the team.

Final League Fixture against Belvedere - Thursday 6th February 2014

Going into this final league game, the team already knew that second place had been secured. However, this did not stop them from putting on a real footballing show! The team played some of their best football of the season with some wonderful passing. There were goals from Kacper, Jay, Joseph & Kian. There was also an impressive debut made by Jack H in Y5. Well done to the team for clinching second place. Especially as they won all of their games apart from one (against the eventual league winners).

The top four teams go through to the Britannia Cup in March. The team are looking forward to the challenge.

Y3/4 Football Tournament - Tuesday 21st January 2014

On a very cold January evening, our Y3/4s played in their first tournament. It was a tough start against Edge Hill, in which we lost 2-0. Our second game however was a different match altogether. We played magnificently as a team, creating many good chances. We won 3-0, with Emily bagging 2 goals and Millie the other. Oliwier set up one of Emily's goals with a super pass after beating the defender. This result meant we played Holy Rosary in the final game, in which we were beaten by a few goals. The team will take a lot from this tournament and there were plenty of encouraging signs for the future. Well done to Morgan, Isabel, Joshua, Asten, Millie, Emily, Oliwier, Harvey and Rhys!

Cricket

Former student Michael Elliott (Y7) has been selected for the South Derbyshire District Squad! This is a fantastic achievement and all at St Modwen's wish him well.

Hockey Competition @ Robert Sutton - 5th November 2013

For this competition, we entered two teams. A special thanks should go to Zoe Ridley who prepared our players for the tournament - they were fantastic!

Red Team - First we beat Outwoods 4-0, before beating Holy Rosary 6-0! Joe was on fire in front of goal! This put the team top of the group and into the final! Here we played Oldfields, narrowly losing 1-0. Finishing runners up was a great achievement!
Well done to Ben, Harry, Joe, Jay, Jaideep, Isabel & Nathaniel.

Blue Team - The blue team had a tough start against Oldfields, but fought hard, losing 2-1. The second game was against Edge Hill, which we won 3-0! Michael, Harrison and Kacper scored the goals. We then played Outwoods A, which was a 0-0 draw. This left us second in the group and put us through to the 3rd place play-off against Outwoods B. This was also 0-0, meaning that we were given joint 3rd place! A huge well done to the team:
Kacper, Emily, Harrison, Ethan, Michael, Amy & George.

Football Matches - see below for game-by-game write ups:

Game 9 - St Modwen's Vs Edge Hill 21-10-13

Going into this game, St Modwen's had won 8 out of 8. Edge Hill had won 7 and drawn 1 out of 8. This meant that with only two fixtures remaining for each team, this match would effectively determine the league winners.
The occasion appeared to affect us, as we went behind early (a fine strike into the top left corner).
We did not look outclassed and had many chances of our own, but Edge Hill proved to be more clinical in front of goal. Shortly after half time, Edge Hill made it 2-0. An impressive header then made it 3-0 whilst we were chasing the game.
On our day the result could have gone our way, but it wasn't to be. We now have one fixture remaining against Belvedere, whilst Edge Hill play Victoria. We have to win and hope Edge Hill lose or draw in order to win the league.
RESULT 0-3 Loss
