Science curriculum overview
Our curriculum aims to offer ‘Excellence for all, through Jesus’ love'.
With Jesus at the heart, we intend to provide:
- Excellence for all children.
- Excellence for all staff.
- Excellent spaces and opportunities to learn.
‘A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science.’
National Curriculum: Science
Our Science curriculum at St Modwen’s is built on twelve big ideas that help shape our children’s understanding of the scientific complexities of the world we live in. As children move through our science curriculum, they will develop an understanding of humanity and how we fit into the animal kingdom and the natural world, the scientific processes that allow our world to function and be introduced to the work of influential scientists from the past and present. Our children will recognise the signs of effective scientific working and experience, observe, and begin to understand natural phenomena. They will partake in scientific enquiries or experiments each half-term linked to their learning and, over time, will begin to develop the skills to assess the reliability of results, ensure tests are carried out fairly, make informed predictions and accurately record results. Our Humanities curriculum is structured to leave space for knowledge to embed - this knowledge is revisited when the particular aspect of Humanities is not being taught through regular low-stakes quizzing.
