What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:
Let's welcome all the new children, their parents and carers to the family of St. Modwen's.
This week we have seen the children come into nursery with a little more confidence, exploring and playing with the resources alongside our friends. The children are becoming more aware of the daily routines, learning to listen and respond to their name for register time and joining in with our daily prayers.
Reception:
Reception have had a fabulous week settling into their new environment. The children have made lots of new friends and had fun playing and exploring all of the different areas. We have even started our phonics learning too! We look forward to seeing you all next week.
Year 2:
Year 2 have settled in really well to the year. In maths this week have explored numbers to 100, we have looks at the groups of tens and ones, partitioned them using a part-whole model and wrote the numeral using words. Next week we will be looking at numbers to 100 on a number line.
In English, we have started our new text 'Poles Apart'. We have read the story and completed our story map. We thought carefully about the beginning, middle and end. Next week we will continue with our text , we will box it up and write sentences using subordinate clauses.
In RE, we have explored the story of Noah's ark. We discussed how Noah would have felt. We will continue to explore this next week.
Year 3:
This week in Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value, including partitioning and flexible partitioning of numbers up to 1,000. In English, we have been exploring our story Hike, using story mapping and boxing up to help us understand and recognise the structure of a story. In RE, we have been learning about God’s creation and exploring how the creation story is told in the book of Genesis. We have also sent home logins for Boom Reader, Times Tables Rockstars and Spelling Shed. We would love to see the children accessing these platforms regularly from home as they provide fantastic opportunities to practise and reinforce the skills we are learning in school.
Year 4:
In Y4 this week, the children plunged into the powerful world of earthquakes, exploring how the Earth’s crust is shaped by shifting tectonic plates. In English, this inspired some fantastic writing and reading based on a gripping survival story set in San Francisco. In Science, the children became brilliant biologists by classifying different vertebrates and invertebrates. In RE, we looked closely at the vital community work carried out by St Chad’s Sanctuary. In PE, we are doing hockey on Mondays and handball on Wednesdays. Finally, our maths sessions focused on deepening our understanding of place value, representing and partitioning numbers up to 10,000.
Year 6:
This week, we have hit the ground running. We have been doing SATs test all week and the children have had a great attitude in the way they have approached them. We have been writing using 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' as inspiration. In RE we have looked closely at the Creation stories. In Science we have looked at the function of blood and in Geography we have studied the Taj Mahal. Our Maths next week will continue with Place Value and ordering and comparing numbers.
