                                            Friday 18th September 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we reach the end of another busy and successful week, it was a real pleasure to hold our first Celebration Assembly of the academic year today. It was wonderful to welcome a number of parents into school to share in the children's achievements and to celebrate the many positive starts that have already been made this term. Thank you to all those who joined us. Looking ahead, dates for all Parents' Evenings throughout the year are now available on the shared school calendar, helping families to plan ahead. I would also like to remind parents that our PTA meeting will take place in school on Monday 21 September. All parents are warmly invited to attend, and I would particularly encourage any new parents to come along, meet other families and find out more about the fantastic work of our PTA and how you can get involved in supporting our school community.

Do also check out our new online resources designed to help keep your children safe online. We will be sharing 'Wake Up Wednesday' information on our social media pages every Wednesday

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Could you help us grow something special?

We are excited to begin planning the transformation of our blank outdoor space into a school allotment and flower garden for our children to enjoy.

We'd love to bring our parent community into the project and are exploring the idea of running a one-off Saturday Parent Wellbeing Garden Morning.

This would be a relaxed, informal session where parents can spend some time outdoors, meet other parents, learn or share practical skills, and work together to create something wonderful for the school community.

There will be plenty of different ways to get involved, whether your strengths are in:

  • Gardening & planting
  • Building & construction
  • Moving & organising
  • Designing & creating

You don't need any gardening experience - there will be something for everyone!

And because we want this to be a genuine opportunity for parents to have some time for themselves, the sessions would be for parents only, without children attending. We'll provide the tea, coffee and cake - you bring yourselves and, if you can, a little enthusiasm!

Before we begin planning, we'd love to find out whether there is enough interest.

If you would be interested in joining us for a Saturday morning, please let us know via the parent Facebook group/poll or send an email to icartwright@st-modwens.staffs.sch.uk as an EOI, along with your availability.

Even half an hour could make a huge difference. By working together, we can create a beautiful outdoor space that our children can learn from, enjoy and help care for years to come.

Could you spare a Saturday morning to help us grow something special?

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

Following our Autumn term topics, Nursery Rhymes and All About Me, we have been learning the nursery rhymes ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive'. Learning rhymes enables children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language and because they are repetitive it can also support the development of memory. So why not try and sing along with the children at home!

In maths the children have been learning about the colours - red, blue and yellow, going on a colour hunt around the nursery, sorting objects into colours and completing some lovely collage work. Next week we will learn the secondary colours and there will be a new nursery rhyme of the week.

Year 1:

Year 1 have had a fantastic start to the term and have thoroughly enjoyed reading the funny story The King's Pants. The children have used their imaginations to design brand-new pairs of pants for the King to wear if he ever came to visit our school! We were amazed by their creativity and the wonderful ideas they came up with. In Maths, we have been building our number skills by exploring one more and one less than a given number. The children have enjoyed using practical resources and number lines to help them solve problems and explain their thinking. We are very proud of their enthusiasm and hard work!

Year 2:

Year 2 has had a great week this week. In maths we have explored flexibly partitioned numbers, we have looked at tens and ones on a number line and looking at how to estimate numbers on a number line. Next week we will be comparing objects and number and recapping multiples 2's, 5's and 10's, please remember to keep practising these at home.

In English, we have been writing sentences with subordinate clauses and adjectives. We have also chosen a country in preparation for their hot task, which is writing a story about the characters from our text 'Poles Apart' going on a journey to different countries.  Next week we will be writing our own stories and looking at spelling, punctuation and grammar.

In RE, we have continued to explore the story of Noah's ark, and we have made promises on how we can help our environment and support God's creation. Next week we will be looking at stewardship.

Year 3:

It has been another busy week in Year 3! The children have continued to work incredibly hard and have shown a positive attitude towards their learning. In Maths, we have continued learning about place value, focusing on hundreds, tens and ones. We have also been using number lines to help us read, understand and work with numbers up to 1,000 . In English, we have written our first Hot Task based on the story Hike. We have been thinking carefully about choosing effective adjectives and expanded noun phrases, as well as remembering to use the correct punctuation in our writing. In RE, we have continued our unit Creation and Covenant. We have been focusing on how we are made in God's image and likeness and exploring what this means for us and how we treat ourselves and others. Next week, we will continue our Maths unit by comparing and ordering numbers to 1,000. In English, we will begin our new non-fiction unit, where we will be writing an information text.

Year 4:

This week in 4A, the children have been creating and describing their own imaginative characters in English, using ambitious vocabulary to bring them to life. In RE, we explored the story of Abraham and reflected on times when we have shown patience in our own lives. In science, the children continued their learning about invertebrates, discovering the different groups and characteristics that help scientists classify them. In geography, we investigated earthquakes and learned how seismographs are used to measure and record seismic waves. In PE, we have continued to develop our skills in hockey and handball. Finally, our maths sessions focused on placing numbers up to 10,000 on number lines, strengthening our understanding of ordering numbers, identifying mid-points, and reasoning about their positions.

Year 4/5:

This week in English, we have been writing our first Hot Task of the year. We are writing a story that teaches a lesson. We have been working hard to use direct speech and fronted adverbials. In Reading, we have been enjoying reading and analysing our new book, The Girl Who Stole an Elephant. In Maths, we have been learning about place value, with Year 5 pupils focusing on place value up to one million. We have been adding and subtracting 10, 100 and 1,000. Next week, we will be learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. We will then learn about Roman numerals. Year 4 pupils will undertake their Times Tables Check in the summer term, so please keep practising at home. In PE, we had fun playing football and hockey. In RE, we have been learning about how Abraham is a role model for us all and teaches us to be patient and trust in God. In Science, we conducted an experiment to discover which material would make the best heat insulator. In Art, we have been drawing self-portraits inspired by the renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Year 5:

In English, we have been learning how to use relative clauses and have annotated our WAGOLL to identify the features of a successful piece of writing. In Maths, we have developed our understanding of place value and compared numbers up to 1,000,000. During RE, we took part in a debate about the Ten Commandments, sharing our ideas and listening respectfully to others. In PE, we have been developing our hockey skills, focusing on dribbling. In Reading, we have learned how to justify our inferences using evidence from the text.

Year 6:

This week, we have been continuing with our narrative story writing using,' The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe' as our inspiration. In Maths, we have practised rounding and ordering whole numbers. In Reading, we have continued reading, 'BrightStorm' and getting to know the main characters. In RE, we have looked at the importance of stewardship when understanding how to become closer to God. In PE we are developing Handball and Football skills. In Geography, we looked at Chichen Itza's importance as a tourist destination. In Science, we considered how nutrients and water are transported around the body.
