Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we reach the end of another wonderful week, I would like to begin by thanking all the parents who attended our recent PTA meeting. It was fantastic to hear of the enthusiasm and support for our school community. There are already lots of exciting events being planned for the year ahead, and we are incredibly grateful to our PTA volunteers for the time and commitment they give to enriching school life for our children. Be sure to follow the PTA on Facebook for updates, opportunities to get involved, and ways to support their fundraising efforts.

A special message from one of our brilliant PTA members, Kieran Ball:

Our first PTA event of the new school year will be Chocolate Bingo on Thursday 22nd October, after school. Come along for a fun afternoon of bingo, with plenty of chocolatey prizes to be won. Tickets will be available to purchase soon, so for now, pop the date in your diary. Eyes down!

On Wednesday, we will be supporting CAFOD's Brighten the Harvest campaign and collecting donations for our local food bank. We are encouraging all pupils to come to school wearing brightly coloured clothes and kindly ask for a contribution of either £1 or a non-perishable food item such as tinned vegetables, soup, beans, pasta, rice, cereal, long-life milk, tea bags or biscuits. Every donation, no matter how small, will help support families within our local community and beyond, and we thank you in advance for your generosity.

A reminder that Parents' Evening bookings are now live on ParentMail. Please ensure you book an appointment to meet with your child's class teacher. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to discuss your child's progress, celebrate successes, and work together to ensure they continue to thrive throughout the year. Strong partnerships between home and school are key to every child's success, and we look forward to welcoming you into school.

Finally, our EYFS Open Days will take place on 14th October and 11th November. Please see the poster below for further details and do share this information with friends, family members, or neighbours who may be looking for Nursery or Reception places for this year or next. There is no better recommendation than one from a current member of our school community, and we would greatly appreciate your support in spreading the word.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Could you help us grow something special?

We are excited to begin planning the transformation of our blank outdoor space into a school allotment and flower garden for our children to enjoy.

We'd love to bring our parent community into the project and are exploring the idea of running a one-off Saturday Parent Wellbeing Garden Morning.

This would be a relaxed, informal session where parents can spend some time outdoors, meet other parents, learn or share practical skills, and work together to create something wonderful for the school community.

There will be plenty of different ways to get involved, whether your strengths are in:

  • Gardening & planting
  • Building & construction
  • Moving & organising
  • Designing & creating

You don't need any gardening experience - there will be something for everyone!

And because we want this to be a genuine opportunity for parents to have some time for themselves, the sessions would be for parents only, without children attending. We'll provide the tea, coffee and cake - you bring yourselves and, if you can, a little enthusiasm!

Before we begin planning, we'd love to find out whether there is enough interest.

If you would be interested in joining us for a Saturday morning, please let us know via the parent Facebook group/poll or send an email to icartwright@st-modwens.staffs.sch.uk as an EOI, along with your availability.

Even half an hour could make a huge difference. By working together, we can create a beautiful outdoor space that our children can learn from, enjoy and help care for years to come.

Could you spare a Saturday morning to help us grow something special?

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

What a busy week the children have had! They have learnt two new nursery rhymes this week, Twinkle, Twinkle  Little Star and One potato, two potato. In maths the theme has continued around the secondary colours and activities have reflected this.

We have also been learning about all the things God has made including ourselves, and singing a song to remind us how wonderful our world is!

Next week as we continue our topic, All about Me, we will be looking at our families. Please help us if you can and send in a family photograph either via email: nursery@st-modwens.staffs.sch.uk or upload a photograph on your Tapestry account for the children to share.

Thank you.

Reception:

Reception have had a lovely week learning more about God's creations. We talked about our favourite thing that God made and we know that he made this because he loves us. We have drawn some lovely pictures! Next week we are looking forward to starting drawing club!

Year 1:

This week year 1 have been planning our own stories about the King. We have been learning to use adjectives in our writing as well as trying hard to remember to use capital letters and full stops correctly. In maths we have been comparing numbers using the less than, greater than and equal to symbols and we have been very impressed with how well the children were able to do this! In RE we wrote our own prayer thanking God for His wonderful creation.

Year 3:

In English this week, we have finished our hot task and we have moved onto our non-fiction unit - an information text. In Maths, we have finished our unit on place value with practicing counting in 50s and ordering and comparing numbers to 1000. In RE, we have learnt all about Fairtrade and how that makes sure everybody is treated fairly, just like God wants us to be. Next week in English, we will be continuing to learn about information texts by learning about organisational devices. In Maths, we are moving onto a new unit of addition and subtraction, starting with recapping number bonds to 10 and adding and subtracting 10, 1 and 100.

Year 4:

In Year 4 this week, children researched earthquakes from around the world on Chromebooks. This research inspired the settings for their own earthquake stories in English. In maths, we learned about the ancient system of Roman numerals and tackled the challenge of rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1,000. In RE, we explored the inspiring story of Abraham, reflecting on the obstacles he faced and thoughtfully connecting his experiences to our own lives. Our science sessions saw the children advance their classification skills to sort plants. Finally, in PE, we stepped up the pace in hockey, progressing from basic ball control to passing and shooting drills.

Year 4/5:

This week in English, we proudly completed our Hot Task stories, carefully editing and proofreading our work to ensure it was the very best it could be. We then began our exciting new writing unit by completing a Cold Task for a tourist guide. In Reading, we have been developing our inference skills by analysing Chaya's actions and considering what they reveal about her character. In Science, we evaluated our investigation into heat insulators, discussing the strengths of our experiment and suggesting ways it could be improved. In RE, we learned about how God tested Abraham's faith when He asked him to sacrifice Isaac, reflecting on the trust and obedience Abraham showed. In Art, we have continued to develop our drawing and sketching skills, taking inspiration from the work of Frida Kahlo. During Spanish lessons, we have been learning how to share facts about ourselves and growing in confidence when speaking the language. We have had a productive and enjoyable week of learning across the curriculum. Please remember to complete weekly reading, Times Tables practice, Spellings and KIRFs activities, and to bring any completed homework into school so we can celebrate it in class. Thank you for your continued support.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5, the children have been busy writing their own warning stories in English and learning how to round numbers up to 1,000,000 in Maths. In Reading, we have continued enjoying Kensuke’s Kingdom, exploring how Michael’s feelings towards Kensuke change throughout the story. In Science, we evaluated our recent experiment and discussed ways we could improve our investigations in the future. In RE, we learned about the Ten Commandments and reflected on why they are important and how they can guide people’s choices. In PE, we have continued developing our football skills. Next week, we will be editing our warning stories and moving on to addition and subtraction in Maths.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6 we have written our 'portal' Hot-Tasks. In Reading, we have learned more about the main characters in 'Bright Storm'. In Maths, we have looked at square and cubed numbers. In RE, we have used an 'Examination of Conscience' to think deeply about our duties as stewards. In Science, we looked at how alcohol, cigarettes and diet can make changes in our bodies. In Geography, we studied The Great Wall of China.

We’re excited to launch our OPAL Bingo Challenge!

Our OPAL Bingo card contains a selection of items that we would love to see our children bring into school to help us develop and enrich our OPAL provision. The challenge is simple: can your child’s class collect one of every item on the Bingo card?

The first class to complete their card - or the class that has ticked off the most items by the deadline - will win a dedicated OPAL Morning!

We would love your help in making this challenge a success. If you have any of the items listed on the Bingo card at home that you no longer need, please consider sending them into school with your child.

The deadline for collecting items is Wednesday 21st October.

Any items brought into school can be given to your child’s class teacher, who will make sure they are passed on to our OPAL team.

Every item, big or small, can make a difference to our children's play. The more loose parts and resources we have available, the more opportunities our children have to create, explore, imagine and play!

Thank you so much for supporting our OPAL journey and helping us to make playtime even more exciting for our children.

Harvest Collection – Brighten Up the Harvest

On Wednesday 30th September, we will be taking part in our CAFOD Harvest Collection. We are encouraging the children to “Brighten Up the Harvest” by wearing their brightest clothes and making a small contribution to help others.

Children can bring either:

  • £1, which will be donated to CAFOD, or
  • Dry food items to support a local food bank which will be donated to the food bank.

Subject: Free cake + your ideas wanted for St Modwen’s ??

Hello everyone,

This message is for everybody who wants some free cake! If that’s you, please read to the end

I’m Kieran, one of the current members of St Modwen’s School PTA.

If you’re not quite sure what the PTA is, we’re a group of parents and teachers who organise fun events and special activities for the children. Fun stuff to give them extra things to remember about their time at St Modwen’s.

Things such as the bingos, school discos, Christmas fair, and even this year’s Summer Fair are all organised by the PTA.

We made over £1,400 profit at the summer fair, and that money is now there waiting to be spent on something for the children to enjoy.

We’ll be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 19th October 2026, after school, and we’d really love as many parents, carers, grandparents, relatives, friends and other members of the school community as possible to come along.

We’ll be looking at what the PTA has been doing, and what we want to do next. So if there’s something you think the children would love, bring your ideas along.

“Get to the cake!” I hear you cry.

Well, to lure you in, we’ll be providing anybody who comes to the meeting with tea, coffee and cake, because we’re not above a little bribery.

So put it in your diary!
