Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Dear Parents and Carers,

A huge thank you to all our families for your incredible generosity this week. We have honestly been blown away by the amount of donations we received, both for CAFOD’s Brighten the Harvest campaign and for our local food bank. It was wonderful to see such a fantastic response from our school community and such a powerful example of putting our faith into action by thinking of and supporting those who are in need. All of the donations were blessed during Mass on Thursday by Father Stan before they are passed on. Thank you, as always, for your kindness and generosity.

It was also lovely to welcome the parents of pupils in 6A for our parent lunch this week. These lunches are always a special opportunity to welcome families into school and allow parents to share a little part of their child’s school day. Next Wednesday it is the turn of our 6B parents, and places can be booked through Arbor.

A reminder too that we have our upcoming Reception and Nursery Open Days for families who may be considering St Modwen’s for their child. These will take place on Wednesday 14th October at 10.30am and Wednesday 11th November at 10.30am. Please spread the word to family and friends who may be interested. Places can be booked by contacting the school office.

Finally, as we begin the month of October, the month traditionally dedicated by the Church to Mary, we are reminded in a special way of the importance of prayer and, particularly, the Rosary. Throughout this month, we will be encouraging our children to turn to Mary in prayer and to deepen their understanding of the Rosary. From Monday, our Mini Vinnies will be selling Rosary beads for £2, which families can order through the Arbor app. Perhaps October provides us all with a lovely opportunity to find a few quiet moments to pray the Rosary together at home and ask Our Lady to accompany and guide our school community.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week's nursery rhyme is 'Five Currant Buns in a Baker's Shop'. The children have thoroughly enjoyed role-playing the rhyme by taking on the roles of the currant buns, the customers and the baker.                                                                    In Maths, we have started our new topic, 'Matching'. The children have been    matching buttons and pairs of wellies, and building towers to match pictures. We will continue exploring this concept next week.                                                               To support their learning at home, perhaps your child could help you by matching socks from the washing basket or pairing up shoes on the shoe rack.

Reception:

We have had a wonderful week in Reception! We have enjoyed exploring our classrooms and outdoor areas during our choosing time. We have continued to learn some new sounds in phonics and have started to apply our knowledge to read short words. We have thought about special people in our lives and talked about our school family and home families.

Next week, we will be continuing our topic of 'Marvellous Me!' by thinking about what makes us special and also learning even more new sounds in phonics!

Year 1:

Year 1 have had another fantastic week of learning! In Maths, we have been comparing amounts and numbers, using our number knowledge to decide which are greater or smaller. In English, we have been busy writing our very own stories inspired by The King’s Pants and sharing lots of imaginative ideas. In RE, we have been thinking about how we can be good stewards of God’s creation, exploring the ways we can care for our wonderful world and why we should do this.

Year 2:

Year 2 have had a really productive week this week. In maths this week have looked at our 2's, 5's, 10's and 3 times tables. Please practice these at home. We have also explored number bonds to 10 and related number facts.  Next week we will be looking at number bonds to 100, adding and subtracting.

In English, we have completed our cold task of writing an information text. We have moved on to our new text 'Lost and Found' we will be exploring the book this week. Next week, we will be continuing exploring the text and writing a senses poem.

In RE, we have looked at baptism and what it means. We will continue to explore this next week

Year 3:

This week in English, we have continued with our Non-Fiction unit. We have been learning how to use fronted adverbials meaningfully. In Maths, we have started our unit on Addition and Subtraction - adding 1s, 10s and 100s. In RE, we have been learning about St Francis' Canticle of Creatures. We wrote our own class Canticle of Creatures and drew some artwork to go with it.

Next week, we will be writing our Hot Task in English - An information text about how to look after the planet and be a good steward. In Maths, we will be learning how to add and subtract across a 10 and 100. In RE, we will be thinking about what we can do to be a good steward and what ecological virtues we can show daily.

Year 4:

In Y4 this week, our children explored the impact of earthquakes on both communities and the natural landscape, considering how these powerful natural disasters can shape the world around us and affect the lives of those living nearby. In English, the children have proudly completed their own earthquake stories, using exciting vocabulary and descriptive writing techniques inspired by our learning. In Science, we have continued developing our classification skills by grouping and sorting living things based on their characteristics. In RE, we learned more about Abraham and how he shared the belief in one God with others. In PE, children focused on improving their hockey dribbling and shooting skills, while in their second PE lesson they put their handball skills into practice through competitive matches. Finally, in maths, we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 before moving on to the written method for adding 4-digit numbers.

Year 4/5:

This week in English, we have been building our toolkit for writing a tourist guide. We have explored how relative clauses can add extra information for the reader and revised our understanding of coordinating and subordinating conjunctions to improve the flow and variety of our writing. In Reading, we have continued enjoying The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, exploring the actions of key characters and using evidence from the text to make thoughtful predictions about what might happen next. In Maths, we have been developing our skills in column addition and column subtraction, demonstrating increasing confidence when solving calculations. In Science, we have been investigating the properties of materials and considering how these characteristics make them suitable for different purposes. In RE, we have been making links between Abraham and Jesus, thinking carefully about what these connections teach us about faith and God's promises. In PE, we have enjoyed developing our football and hockey skills, showing determination and teamwork throughout our lessons. In Art, we have continued to sketch in the style of Frida Kahlo, focusing on observation and detail. During Spanish lessons, we have been learning how to introduce ourselves using "Me presento" and are becoming more confident in speaking the language.Next week, we will continue developing our tourist guide writing and begin applying the techniques we have learned to create engaging pieces of work. In Reading, we will further explore the characters and events in our class novel. In Maths, we will be using estimation and inverse operations to check the accuracy of our calculations and deepen our understanding of addition and subtraction. Please remember to practise your times tables, complete your KIRFs and spellings, and continue logging your reading on Boom Reader. Thank you for your continued support.

Year 5:

In English, we edited our Hot Task and started our Cold Task based on our non-fiction text. In Maths, we began addition and subtraction, focusing on using the correct methods. In Reading, we explored words in context and used dictionaries to find their meanings. In RE, we learnt about God’s covenant and what it means to become His people. In Science, we explored suitable materials and their properties. In PE, we perfected our hockey push pass and practised using movement and accurate passing to advance towards the goal.

Year 6:

This week we have started our new Non-Fiction unit in English based on 'Animals of the North'. In Reading, we have compared two different settings from the Brightstorm book. In Maths, we have practised multiplication and division methods. In RE, we have continued to look at how we care for God's Creation and have looked at how the Sacrament of Baptism is important when considering our relationship with God. In Science, we carried out an investigation into heart rate and exercise. In Geography, we studied how the war in the Middle East has had an impact on visitor numbers to Petra. This week we also considered why it is important to know about allergies and how we can protect our friends at school.

We’re excited to launch our OPAL Bingo Challenge!

Our OPAL Bingo card contains a selection of items that we would love to see our children bring into school to help us develop and enrich our OPAL provision. The challenge is simple: can your child’s class collect one of every item on the Bingo card?

The first class to complete their card - or the class that has ticked off the most items by the deadline - will win a dedicated OPAL Morning!

We would love your help in making this challenge a success. If you have any of the items listed on the Bingo card at home that you no longer need, please consider sending them into school with your child.

The deadline for collecting items is Wednesday 21st October.

Any items brought into school can be given to your child’s class teacher, who will make sure they are passed on to our OPAL team.

Every item, big or small, can make a difference to our children's play. The more loose parts and resources we have available, the more opportunities our children have to create, explore, imagine and play!

Thank you so much for supporting our OPAL journey and helping us to make playtime even more exciting for our children.

Subject: Free cake + your ideas wanted for St Modwen’s ??

Hello everyone,

This message is for everybody who wants some free cake! If that’s you, please read to the end

I’m Kieran, one of the current members of St Modwen’s School PTA.

If you’re not quite sure what the PTA is, we’re a group of parents and teachers who organise fun events and special activities for the children. Fun stuff to give them extra things to remember about their time at St Modwen’s.

Things such as the bingos, school discos, Christmas fair, and even this year’s Summer Fair are all organised by the PTA.

We made over £1,400 profit at the summer fair, and that money is now there waiting to be spent on something for the children to enjoy.

We’ll be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 19th October 2026, after school, and we’d really love as many parents, carers, grandparents, relatives, friends and other members of the school community as possible to come along.

We’ll be looking at what the PTA has been doing, and what we want to do next. So if there’s something you think the children would love, bring your ideas along.

“Get to the cake!” I hear you cry.

Well, to lure you in, we’ll be providing anybody who comes to the meeting with tea, coffee and cake, because we’re not above a little bribery.

So put it in your diary!
