Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Dear Parents and Carers,

What positive week we have had!

A huge well done to our Year 5 and 6 girls’ and boys’ football teams on their successes this week. We are very proud of the way they have represented our school. It was also lovely to welcome parents from 6B for lunch this week, and we look forward to welcoming families from Mrs Smith and Mrs Kular 5A on Wednesday 14th October.

Looking ahead, our PTA’s Chocolate Bingo takes place on 22nd October and everyone is welcome! To help with prizes, we are asking children to bring in a chocolate bar or chocolate item to donate over the next week (please avoid nuts). The class that collects the most will receive a free bingo card for every child in the class, so let the chocolate challenge begin!

We also have the first of our EYFS Open Mornings on 14th October at 10.30am, when prospective families can come and see our Nursery and Reception classes in action. If you know a family looking for a Nursery or Reception place for the coming year, please do pass on the information; places can be booked through the school office.

Finally, this Sunday’s Gospel reminds us that we are invited to God’s feast and to celebrate being part of one family in Christ. Perhaps this weekend, you might talk with your child about the ways they can say ‘yes’ to God’s invitation through their choices, words and actions. Have a wonderful weekend. Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week our nursery rhymes have been The Wheels on the Bus and Five Little Ducks, and many of our activities have been linked to these familiar favourites. In RE and RSE, we have continued learning about the Story of Creation. The children have been recalling the wonderful things God created and discussing how the most special part of creation is US!

As we continue getting to know one another, the children have enjoyed talking about their favourite toys. We worked together to create a pictogram to find out which toys were the most popular and used our results to compare and discuss our findings.

In Maths, the children have been fantastic at matching a variety of resources, matching objects by colour, shape and size, showing super sorting skills.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have really enjoyed reading Do Not Enter the Monster Zoo! We have been exploring the meaning of key vocabulary from the story and using exciting adjectives to describe the different monsters. The children particularly enjoyed bringing the story to life through role play, acting out different parts and imagining what it might be like to visit the Monster Zoo! In Maths, we have been learning about part-whole models and using them to understand how numbers can be split into different parts. We have also been using our part-whole models to help us write addition number sentences.

Year 2:

In maths this week, we have looked at our number bonds to 10 and 100, also adding and subtracting ones.  Next week, we are looking at adding 3 numbers and adding crossing the 10's.

In English, we have been looking at expanded noun phrases and have put the new text 'Lost and Found' into a text map. Next week we will be looking

In RE, we have looked at Baptism and how we can share Jesus' light.

Year 3:

In year 3 this week, we have continued our unit on addition and subtraction - adding 10s across 100. We have been practicing using column addition to exchange 1 tens for one hundred. In English, we have written our Hot Task - a non-fiction information text about how we can look after the planet. The children have made some lovely links to RE during this. In RE, we have looked at Pope Francis' ecological virtues and thought carefully about how we can be good stewards.

Next week, we are starting to subtract 1s and 10s across 100 and adding two numbers with the column method. In English, we will be focussing on grammar.

Year 4:

In Y4 this week, the children explored the devastating Haiti earthquake of 2010, writing a fact file all about it (geography). In English, they have been writing their own non-chronological reports about earthquakes, carefully considering features such as headings, subheadings and layout to help engage and inform the reader. In RE, the children learned about the story of Joseph, reflecting on how feelings of jealousy can sometimes take hold and considering the importance of making positive choices. In science, we have continued developing our understanding of classification. In PE, we have continued to build on our hockey and handball skills, showing increasing confidence, teamwork and control during games and activities. Finally, in maths, the children have been learning the written column method for subtraction, practising calculations both with and without exchanges.

Year 4/5:

This week in English, we completed the first draft of our Hot Task by writing a tourist guide to Mexico. We then spent time editing and proofreading our work, carefully checking for improvements and correcting any errors. In SPaG, we continued to develop our writing skills by learning how to use relative clauses and parenthesis effectively. In Reading, we explored The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, predicting Chaya’s actions and motives using evidence from the text to justify our ideas. In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of column subtraction and using inverse operations to check our answers. We have also been applying our learning through estimation and problem-solving activities. In Science, we investigated the uses of everyday materials and considered why certain materials are chosen for specific purposes. In RE, we learned about Joseph and his jealous brothers, reflecting on the consequences of jealousy and the importance of forgiveness. In PE, we continued to develop our skills in both hockey and football, demonstrating teamwork and perseverance. In Art, we have continued our Frida Kahlo sketches, focusing on detail and observation. During Spanish lessons, we have been learning how to share facts about ourselves and are becoming increasingly confident in speaking the language. Next week, we will begin improving and publishing our tourist guides in English, while continuing to develop our grammar skills. In Maths, we will build on our subtraction methods and continue applying them to reasoning and problem-solving tasks. Across the wider curriculum, we look forward to continuing our learning in Science, RE, Art, PE and Spanish. Please remember to complete your weekly reading, practise your Times Tables, learn your KIRFs and hand in your homework on time. As part of our RSE curriculum, we will be covering puberty next week. Parents and carers can log in to the Ten:Ten portal to view the lesson content in advance. Thank you for your continued support.

Year 5:

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 5! In PE, we developed our hockey skills, focusing on defending and using a long-stick tackle effectively. In RE, we compared the Ten Commandments with British Law, discussing how both provide guidance for living safely, fairly and respectfully. In English, we worked on writing cohesively, preparing for our upcoming explanation text hot task. In Maths, we tackled multi-step addition and subtraction problems, developing our reasoning and problem-solving skills. In Music, we continued developing our ukulele skills and learned how to play the C chord. In Art, we have started creating our final pieces inspired by the work of Frida Kahlo, applying the skills and techniques we have developed throughout our unit.

Next week is Assessment Week. Attendance is extremely important as these assessments help us identify what the children know, understand and can do, as well as highlighting any areas where they may need further support. We use this information carefully to help guide where our learning goes next.

Year 6:

This week we have been thinking about the structure of our non-fiction report in English. In Maths we have persevered with learning Long Division. In reading we have given our opinions about characters. In RE we have studied the prologue of the fourth gospel and the Nicene Creed. In Geography we have considered how climate change threatens the Wonders of the World. In Science we have started our new topic - animals and their environment.

We’re excited to launch our OPAL Bingo Challenge!

Our OPAL Bingo card contains a selection of items that we would love to see our children bring into school to help us develop and enrich our OPAL provision. The challenge is simple: can your child’s class collect one of every item on the Bingo card?

The first class to complete their card - or the class that has ticked off the most items by the deadline - will win a dedicated OPAL Morning!

We would love your help in making this challenge a success. If you have any of the items listed on the Bingo card at home that you no longer need, please consider sending them into school with your child.

The deadline for collecting items is Wednesday 21st October.

Any items brought into school can be given to your child’s class teacher, who will make sure they are passed on to our OPAL team.

Every item, big or small, can make a difference to our children's play. The more loose parts and resources we have available, the more opportunities our children have to create, explore, imagine and play!

Thank you so much for supporting our OPAL journey and helping us to make playtime even more exciting for our children.

Subject: Free cake + your ideas wanted for St Modwen’s ??

Hello everyone,

This message is for everybody who wants some free cake! If that’s you, please read to the end

I’m Kieran, one of the current members of St Modwen’s School PTA.

If you’re not quite sure what the PTA is, we’re a group of parents and teachers who organise fun events and special activities for the children. Fun stuff to give them extra things to remember about their time at St Modwen’s.

Things such as the bingos, school discos, Christmas fair, and even this year’s Summer Fair are all organised by the PTA.

We made over £1,400 profit at the summer fair, and that money is now there waiting to be spent on something for the children to enjoy.

We’ll be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 19th October 2026, after school, and we’d really love as many parents, carers, grandparents, relatives, friends and other members of the school community as possible to come along.

We’ll be looking at what the PTA has been doing, and what we want to do next. So if there’s something you think the children would love, bring your ideas along.

“Get to the cake!” I hear you cry.

Well, to lure you in, we’ll be providing anybody who comes to the meeting with tea, coffee and cake, because we’re not above a little bribery.

So put it in your diary!
