Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we come to the end of another week, we begin with some very special congratulations to Bishop Timothy, our Auxiliary Bishop, who many of our families will know through his visits to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation with our children. Bishop Timothy has been called by Pope Leo XIV to become the new Bishop of Brentwood, and on behalf of all the children, families and staff at St Modwen’s, we send him our warmest congratulations and every good wish and prayer as he begins this new chapter in his ministry.

A reminder to our Year 6 families that applications for secondary school places close on 31st October and we would encourage families to consider Blessed Robert Sutton Catholic Voluntary Academy so that their child can continue their Catholic education. Looking a little further ahead, applications for Reception places for September 2027 open on 1st November and close on 15th January. We will also be holding a second Open Morning on 11th November for families considering Reception or Nursery places at St Modwen’s. Please contact the school office to book a place or pass this information to family and friends who may be considering St Modwen's School for their child.

Please check the dates on the school calendar for Christmas events coming up next half term.

Finally, a huge thank you for all the chocolate donations received for our PTA Chocolate Bingo next week. We will still be gratefully accepting donations on Monday and Tuesday. I hope all our families have a lovely and restful weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week the children have been learning all about Harvest Time and how fruit and vegetables are grown and collected from the fields. We explored a variety of fruits and vegetables and talked about our likes and dislikes.            The children enjoyed a range of activities, including vegetable printing, making scarecrows, singing the nursery rhyme Old MacDonald Had a Farm, and learning some of the Makaton signs for the animals on the farm.                                           In maths, our focus has been sorting. The children have been sorting objects by colour and size, as well as sorting different 2D shapes.

Reception:

This week Reception have been looking at the story "In every house, on every street." We have loved talking about our families and who lives in our house. We have built different houses in the construction area and made our families with playdough. We drew some lovely family pictures, writing sounds and simple words. In RE, we have been thinking about what we can do to look after God's creations. Next week we are looking forward to learn all about Autumn.

Year 1:

This week, year 1 have been exploring our new book in English, "Do not enter the Monster Zoo." We have been creating our own monsters and using adjectives to describe them ready to write our own monster stories. In maths, we have focused on number sentences and number bonds to 10. In RE we have been looking at the Our Father prayer and discussing what it means and why Jesus taught the prayer to his Disciples.

Year 2:

This week we have tried really hard in maths when adding three, 1-digit numbers. We have been adding numbers to the next 10 and adding numbers across ten. We made sure to find our number bonds first before finding the missing part to add  together.

In English, we spotted the features of a fact file ready for our Hot Task. We have also practised writing in the past tense; we wrote sentences to match the pictures from our story Lost and Found.

In RE, we have discussed Psalms. We talked about what they are and how they help us feel closer to God.

Next week, we are looking forward to DT project week!

Year 3:

We have had another busy week in year 3. In Maths, we have been practicing subtracting 1s across a 10 and subtracting 10s across a 100 using column subtration. The children worked super hard with this and it would be great if you could practice this at home with your child. In English, we have been practicing using grammar, including fronted adverbials and the correct punctuation (. ! ?). In RE, we looked at Laudato Si and thought about how this helps us to do God's work. Next week in RE, we will be learning about Psalms.

Year 4:

In Y4 this week, the children enjoyed a special visit from a man from 1066, who taught them all about the Battle of Hastings. Alongside this, they have been working hard on their assessments and publishing their non-chronological reports in English. In maths, the focus has been heavily on improving times table speed using Times Table Rockstars, and children are encouraged to continue practising at home. In geography, the children have been learning about tsunamis and how devastating they can be, studying the 2004 tsunami as a key example. In RE, they explored how both Joseph and Abraham had to put their trust in God during tough times, trusting that He has a plan. In PE, the children played some exciting handball matches, showing great energy and teamwork. Finally, looking ahead, next week is DT week, where the children will be making earthquake-proof buildings using cardboard brought from home.

Year 4/5:

This week in English, we have been revising key SPaG skills and completing our Hot Task by writing and editing a tourist guide to Mexico. The children worked hard to improve their writing through careful proofreading and thoughtful editing. In Reading, we have continued enjoying The Girl Who Stole an Elephant, analysing characters' actions and making predictions about what might happen next, using evidence from the text to support our ideas. In Maths, we have been learning about area, revising arithmetic skills and completing assessments to showcase our understanding. In Science, we investigated which materials are soluble and explored what happens when different substances are mixed with water. In RE, we reflected on the lives of Joseph and Abraham, discussing how both showed great faith in God and making links between their stories. In PE, we focused on teamwork in football and developed our shooting and dribbling skills in hockey. In Art, we continued our work inspired by Frida Kahlo, exploring oil painting techniques and her distinctive artistic style. During Spanish lessons, we recapped "Mi presento" and practised introducing ourselves with increasing confidence. Next week, we will complete our assessments and continue developing our mathematical understanding. Year 4/5 children will begin learning about multiplication facts with Year 5 learning about square, cube and prime numbers. We will also continue our learning across the wider curriculum and look forward to another busy week in school. Please ensure that termly homework is completed and handed in before Friday's Excellence in Homework Assembly. Thank you for your continued support.ok

Year 5:

Year 5 have worked incredibly hard this week during assessment week, completing their grammar, reading and maths papers. We are so proud of the resilience, determination and positive attitudes they have shown throughout! In RE, we reflected on the importance of forgiveness and why it can sometimes be difficult to forgive others. In art, we completed our final paintings inspired by Frida Kahlo and evaluated our finished pieces, celebrating our creativity and progress. We also thoroughly enjoyed a drama session with the Star Foundation, alongside some exciting learning in science and geography. In music, we continued developing our ukulele skills by practising strumming the C chord as we played Sailor Went to Sea. Well done, Year 5, for another fantastic week of learning!

We’re excited to launch our OPAL Bingo Challenge!

Our OPAL Bingo card contains a selection of items that we would love to see our children bring into school to help us develop and enrich our OPAL provision. The challenge is simple: can your child’s class collect one of every item on the Bingo card?

The first class to complete their card - or the class that has ticked off the most items by the deadline - will win a dedicated OPAL Morning!

We would love your help in making this challenge a success. If you have any of the items listed on the Bingo card at home that you no longer need, please consider sending them into school with your child.

The deadline for collecting items is Wednesday 21st October.

Any items brought into school can be given to your child’s class teacher, who will make sure they are passed on to our OPAL team.

Every item, big or small, can make a difference to our children's play. The more loose parts and resources we have available, the more opportunities our children have to create, explore, imagine and play!

Thank you so much for supporting our OPAL journey and helping us to make playtime even more exciting for our children.

Subject: Free cake + your ideas wanted for St Modwen’s ??

Hello everyone,

This message is for everybody who wants some free cake! If that’s you, please read to the end

I’m Kieran, one of the current members of St Modwen’s School PTA.

If you’re not quite sure what the PTA is, we’re a group of parents and teachers who organise fun events and special activities for the children. Fun stuff to give them extra things to remember about their time at St Modwen’s.

Things such as the bingos, school discos, Christmas fair, and even this year’s Summer Fair are all organised by the PTA.

We made over £1,400 profit at the summer fair, and that money is now there waiting to be spent on something for the children to enjoy.

We’ll be holding our Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Monday 19th October 2026, after school, and we’d really love as many parents, carers, grandparents, relatives, friends and other members of the school community as possible to come along.

We’ll be looking at what the PTA has been doing, and what we want to do next. So if there’s something you think the children would love, bring your ideas along.

“Get to the cake!” I hear you cry.

Well, to lure you in, we’ll be providing anybody who comes to the meeting with tea, coffee and cake, because we’re not above a little bribery.

So put it in your diary!
