                                             Friday 25th October 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today marks the end of the first half-term of the academic year.  This morning we have celebrated pupils who have demonstrated 'Excellence in Reading' and in 'Homework'.  Well done to all of our pupils who have been working hard at home this half-term, working their way through the homework grids, and thank you for your support as parents to strengthen these home/school links.  As a reminder, the homework grids (as well as curriculum overviews) can all be found on our website under the Curriculum tab.

We return to school on 4th November.  A reminder that, in the first week back, the PTA will be hosting a family Bingo event after school on 7th November.  We invite all of our pupils to come to school in non-uniform on 5th November in exchange for chocolate donations to add to the prizes.  Parent evenings are also taking place in the second week back, so we look forward to welcoming all parents into school to discuss their child's progress so far this year.  Please see the school calendar for all upcoming events.

We have recently shared information with you regarding how to keep your child safe online, I do hope you have found this useful.  As we approach half-term, please also be aware of the parental settings on Smart TVs where children may be able to access adult content and YouTube channels.  Our advice is that primary age pupils should only have access to 'YouTube Kids'.

I shared with the children in assembly this morning that I am heading to Rome and to the Vatican this coming week, and will offer up prayers for our school community during my visit.  I wish you all a wonderful half-term break,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week's nursery rhyme has been 'Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush', the children have enjoyed singing this and acting it out in a ring game.  We have consolidated our learning of Colours, Matching and Sorting in Maths, and have listened to a lovely story called 'Lucy's Picture' and created our very own pictures like Lucy, with lots of textures and natural materials relating to the story of Creation.

Wishing you all a lovely half-term.

Reception:

In Reception, we have been celebrating Diwali! It has been a lot of fun.  We have done lots of different activities. We started off by making Diya lamps using salt dough and painted and decorated them. We used lots of bright colours, along with glitter, to make them sparkly.  We have been dressing up and putting on bangles to look like Rama and Sita. We finished the week with a food tasting session.  It was really tasty! Miss Butt and Miss Mallinson are extremely proud of all the Reception children for working so hard during their first half-term at St Modwen's . Have a wonderful and restful break.

Year 1:

Year 1 have had a brilliant time designing and making our very own buses.  The children worked independently to create their wonderful buses and they are all so proud of what they have created.  On Thursday the children had 'the best day ever', joining in with the Gunpowder Plot workshop.  We were so impressed with their acting skills! Next half-term we will be exploring this further in our History topic.

Year 2:

What a fun week we have had in Year 2!  We have designed and created hospitals for Mary Seacole as our Design and Technology project.  We enjoyed learning different joining techniques, which we then used to construct our hospitals.  We also had a visit from a theatre company for an interactive workshop about the Great Fire of London.  This has got us very excited about our upcoming unit on the Great Fire of London next half-term.  We have also written our hot task this week in English, an information text about penguins.  We did some research at the beginning of the week to find out interesting facts and then used these to write our text.  Have a wonderful week for the half-term break.

Year 3:

This week has been DT week!  We have had lots of fun learning about Katherine Johnson and learning about different ways of strengthening shell structures.  We have designed and created our own rocks.  In RE, we learnt about Jesus forgiving a sinful woman, and we reflected on what we have learnt from the scripture about forgiveness and how it links to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  In English, we finished our hot task, which was writing precise instructions for making and decorating cupcakes. In Reading, we finished and evaluated the Fantastic Flying Books by Morris Lessmore.  In Maths, we learnt how to do column subtraction without exchanging.  Next term, we will be learning how to exchange across tens and hundreds.  In Geography, we had a Caritas in Action discussion about poverty in India.  Mr Quinn and Miss Illsley have been very impressed with all the hard work and effort put into this half-term.  We wish you a relaxing half-term and look forward to seeing all the pupils after half-term.

Year 4:

Year 4 have worked extremely hard this week during our assessments.  We are extremely proud of each and every one of them for being so dedicated to their work.  In RE, they created playscripts linked to Jesus' transfiguration.  We have thoroughly enjoyed our design and technology work this week when we have designed and created an earthquake-proof house.  We have learnt a range of attachment techniques such as flange and L brace which we used in our final design to ensure it remained erect during an earthquake.  In English, we have completed our hot task and successfully used organisational devices.  Have a delightful half-term and a well-earned rest.  Please ensure that you use Boom Reader, Spelling Shed and TTRockStars regularly throughout half term.

Year 5:

In English this week, we have been writing our hot task about the formation of fossils.  We have covered prime, square and cube numbers in maths.  In RE, we have been learning about the rite of baptism.  We have spent our afternoons working on our DT projects.  The children have designed and built their own bridges and have had a fantastic time doing it.

Year 6:

Year 6 have produced our Hot Tasks in writing: Amazing Machines. In Maths, we have started to learn about fractions.  In Reading, we have continued with Brightstorm. In RE, we have discussed what 'calling' means and researched Saints who had a calling.  In PE, we finished football and handball with a mini tournament.  In DT, we have produced playground rides.  In Science, we have continued to look at micro-organisms and how mould can grow on bread.
