8/11/2024 School Newsletter

                                             Friday 8th November 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

A warm welcome back to all of our families for the start of a busy half term.  This half term sees the school prepare for Christmas during the season of Advent as well as events such as Parents' Evenings and Parent lunches.  It was lovely to welcome the parents of 1A today.  Please check in on our school calendar for all the upcoming events, including nativities, carol concerts and our annual Christmas Fair.

You may have noticed our recently updated website, on there you will find useful links to our curriculum overviews, homework grids as well as key information regarding term dates, school uniform and safeguarding information.

At Parents' Evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday next week we will once again be joined by the Scholastic Book Fair, where any book sales help towards buying additional books for our school library.  Thank you for supporting this endeavour.  Also, next week is the final St Modwen's Run Club for this term.  We will be finishing the current season with a return to Swadlincote Junior Parkrun at Maurice Lea Memorial Park, on Sunday 17th November at 9am.   All St Modwen's children are invited to join us for this event.  If you wish to bring your child along, please ensure you have registered for a barcode via the Junior Parkrun website register | parkrun UK

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

We hope you all had a lovely half-term.  Thank you for returning your autumn bags, you have been very busy finding lots of autumn treasures on your walk.

This week the children have been learning all about Guy Fawkes and why we celebrate  5th November.  We have been making firework pictures, matching shapes and colours on rockets and listening to all the different sounds they make.  In our Maths we have been learning all about the number 1, how to represent 1 with our finger and that 1 object means that there is a total of 1.

We ended the week learning all about the festival of Diwali and how it is celebrated.  We have listened to stories, made lights and lanterns, created rangoli patterns and sang Diwali songs.

Reception:

In Reception, we have been busy learning all about magic!  We have started our new topic and we made our own potions. We've been writing some words to go in the potions.  It was really tricky! In Maths, we have been learning all about shapes. We used lots of practical resources to sort them into groups.

Year 1:

Year 1 have been very creative, using their painting skills to produce wonderful fireworks pictures.  We were very impressed with how well they mixed the paint to achieve the colours they wanted and used different techniques and tools to complete the paintings.  In RE, we have been thinking about prayer and why it is important to pray.  The children have also been brilliant mathematicians this week, they have been solving problems by taking away and representing the problems in lots of different ways.

Year 2:

This week we have started learning all about the Great Fire of London.  We read about Vlad's experience of the fire and discussed where and when the fire started.  We have also started subtraction in Maths, thinking carefully about how finding the next multiple of 10 can help us when subtracting across 10.  Please keep practising those number bonds to 10 at home to strengthen this area of learning.  Finally, we have considered our Caritas in Action theme of Family and Community, we considered how small things can make a big difference and carefully considered how we can make a difference in our community.

Year 3:

We have had a fabulous first week back in Year 3.  In Maths, we have been focussing on column subtraction with exchanging in both the tens and hundreds columns.  We have been practising our 3 times tables and recapping time to the nearest 5 minutes to make sure that we know the KIRF statements for Autumn 2.  In English, we have started a new key text of 'The Bear and the Piano', and we have been thinking about ambitious vocabulary.  In RE, we have been thinking about the importance of listening to God's messages and where we hear these.  Our new Caritas in Action theme is Family and Community, so we have researched some charities which help in the community and have been thinking about what kind of person we should be to ensure that we are forming positive relationships in the community.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4, we have been introduced to our new Caritas in Action theme of Family and Community.  We focussed particularly on who is in our community in Burton-on Trent.  In RE, we have started our new unit on Moses and have learnt all about his birth.  In Maths, we have been looking at the area of 2-D shapes.  In English, we have been looking at some poetry based around World War 1 to tie in with our new topic in History.  We completed a live BBC lesson to create our own poems and have been thinking deeper about the poem 'Death that Need Not Have Been'.  In PE, we have started two new units; yoga and netball.

Year 5

This week in Year 5 has been very exciting as we have started all of our new topics.  The children were particularly enthusiastic about the WW2 topic.  We started by creating a timeline of the war.  In Maths, we have started fractions which the children seem to have grasped well.  In PE, we have really enjoyed doing yoga and netball.  In English, we have started reading our new text 'When The Sky Falls' which links well to our History topic.  Overall, a jam-packed week for us all!

Year 6:

This week, in Year 6, we have been adding and subtracting fractions in Maths.  In English, we have started a new unit based around 'The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe'.

In RE, we have looked at Martyrdom and Saintliness.  In Reading, we have carried on with our Brightstorm journey.  In PE, we have started Basketball and Yoga.  In Geography, we have looked at Climate Change.  In Science, we have classified different Micro-Organisms.  In Computing, we looked at the history of Computers and Secret Codes.
