15/11/2024 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 15th November 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week we held the count for the Parent Governor ballot.  Thank you to all of our parents who took the time to vote.  The successful candidate is Mr Lundman, who will join the school's board of Governors for a four-year term.  Please keep him in your prayers in this important role.

A reminder that bookings are now live on Parent Mail for the KS1 Nativity production and the KS2 (Yrs 5/6) Carol Service.  Please book your tickets; 2 per family.  If you require any additional tickets, please email the office who will let you know if there are any spare tickets nearer to these events.

This Sunday, the St Modwen's Run Club will once again be returning to Junior Parkrun at Maurice Lea Memorial Park, Swadlincote at 9am.  This event is open to all children aged 4-14, so I encourage all of our children to come along on Sunday to join us.  It's a 2km course and parents are welcome to run too, but don't have to!  The organisers have asked parents to use Market Street or York Road for parking.  If you're joining us, please ensure you have registered with your child and have received a barcode.  I look forward to seeing you there!

I wish our Year 4 all the best on their trip on Tuesday to Staffordshire Regiment Museum, and look forward to hearing all about it on their return.

Wishing you all a super weekend,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

We started our week by remembering all the soldiers who fought to protect our country.  We have completed lots of activities across all areas of learning to support Remembrance Day.  We were very proud of how quietly they stood when taking part in the 2-minute silence at 11 o'clock.  Please see your child's Tapestry account to see what they have been learning.

In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 2.  We are beginning to subitise a group of two objects and represent 2 using our fingers.  We made 'listening ears' for our listening walk around the school, identifying the different sounds we could hear in our school environment.

Reception:

In Reception, we have had such a busy week!  We started the week by going to Misson assembly for the very first time.  Mrs Sherratt was so proud of us for sitting so sensibly.  We took part in the 2-minute silence for Remembrance Day and spoke about the field where poppies grew.  In Drawing Club, we read The Magic Crayon and were drawn into the magic of the fairy tale woods.  Miss Butt and Miss Mallinson enjoyed talking about the wonderful progress each child has made at Parents' Evening, and we are very proud of you all!  Well done!

Year 1:

Year 1 have enjoyed exploring 2D and 3D shapes this week. We have been naming and describing them, as well as sorting them into groups.  In RE, we have continued to learn about prayer and have thought about the meaning of the Lord's Prayer as well as writing our own prayers.  The children enjoyed learning a poem for Remembrance Day and were able to think of their own actions to add to the poem as we read it together.

Year 2:

We have had a very busy week in Year 2.  We have continued our learning about the Great Fire of London and have started thinking about our own character to retell the story from their point of view. We learnt why the fire spread so quickly and have discussed how grateful we are that our community is supported by a Fire Brigade.  In maths, we have started to add 2, 2-digit numbers together whilst concentrating on adding our ones first and then our tens.

Year 3:

In maths this week, we have been thinking about the inverse operation and using this to check our answers.  We have also been thinking about using the most efficient method when looking at reasoning questions.  In English, we have continued our learning of the Bear and the Piano. We have innovated the story by creating our own characters along with our own musical instruments ready for when we write our Hot Task. We have also been looking at the poem, Remembrance Day. Remembering and reflecting upon those who lost their lives through artwork.  In RE, we have been thinking about how and when we listen to God, why this is important and what God has taught us through scripture.

Year 4:

We have been working on our knowledge of multiples this week, focusing how multiplication is commutative and finding patterns.  Please use timetables.co.uk as well as TTRockStars to support your child's quick recall of their timetables up to 12x12.  In preparation for our trip next week, we discovered what life was like living in the trenches during WW1.  Moses and the Burning Bush has been our focus in RE this week.  We have written letters of applications to be journalists in preparation for writing a newspaper report about the event which triggered the start of WW1.

Year 5:

In Year 5 this week, we have been exploring the poem In Flanders fields for Remembrance Day and created some fantastic artwork.  In English, we have focused on practising our skills ready to write our hot task next week.  In Maths, the children have been working extremely hard on our fractions topic and have been converting fractions and mixed numbers. We have started our new RE topic and explored some parables and the meaning behind them. In History, the children explored the different ways that Britain prepared for war.

Year 6:

This week has been an assessment week.  In RE, we have started our new unit: Mary and the Saints.  In English, we planned our story and practised using complex sentences.  In Geography, we looked at how tourism can be affected by global conflicts.  In PE, we have continued with Basketball and Yoga.

A very big Thank you to Emme, Thea, Emily and Amelia for helping at the book fair! Well done girls.
