                                   Friday 6th December 2024

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we begin the first week of Advent, we enter a special time of preparation and reflection.  This week, we lit the Advent Candle of Hope, marking the start of this meaningful season.

There’s a lot of things happening at school throughout Advent, and we’re grateful for your involvement.  We are taking part in several wonderful initiatives, including:

  • Daily Advent Reflections from the team at CAFOD
  • Advent Prayer Bags
  • Our Diocesan Reverse Advent Calendar Project
  • Preparations for our Nativity and Carol celebrations

Thank you for your continued support of these events.

Looking ahead to next week, we have several special events:

  • KS1 and EYFS Nativity Productions
  • Year 4 Carols at the Hospital

We would love to see you there and welcome your attendance at these special performances.

This Saturday, we also invite you to support the SS Mary & Modwen Christmas Bazaar, an annual parish event raising much-needed funds for the church. Your support means so much!

Next Friday, the PTA Christmas Fair will be held at school at 3:30pm, and we’re excited to welcome you for fun, games, market stalls, and light refreshments.

On Sunday, a talented group of Carol Singers from St Modwen's will represent the school at the Lord Mayor's Carol Concert at the Town Hall.  We wish them all the best for this prestigious event.

Wishing you all a peaceful and joyful weekend as we continue our Advent journey.

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week the children have been learning all about Advent, a time of getting ready for the birth of Jesus.  We started by learning a new morning prayer and explored the signs and symbols of the Advent wreath as well as making our own wreath.  The children listened to the bible story, 'An angel visits Mary' during our liturgy, using the characters from the nativity to support in role play.

The children will also be taking it in turns to bring home the Advent bag.  Please support your child’s learning by sharing and talking about the resources in the bag and writing your own prayer together.

Reception:

In Reception, we started talking about Advent.  We changed our prayer space and changed the colour to purple.  We lit our first purple candle and spoke about the meaning Hope.  In English, we have been reading Ella’s night lights,  we have done a fantastic job at writing sounds, words, captions and sentences.  In RE, we made an advent wreath using salt dough.  Then we added the 4 coloured candles to represent Hope, Peace, Joy and Love.

Year 1:

This week year 1 have been busy writing a plan for their hot task.  We have been ordering the main events of the Gunpowder Plot and thinking about how Guy Fawkes felt ready to write his diary next week.  We have had lots of fun practising our dances for the Nativity and learning the songs. In RE, we have been learning about the meaning of Advent.  In Maths, we have continued to explore numbers to 20 with a focus on knowing one more and one less to solve problems.

Year 2:

This week, in year 2, we have worked so hard practising our Nativity.  We have also started learning about Advent and have linked this to the Nativity we are performing.  We cannot wait for you to come and see all of our hard work.

Year 3:

This week in Maths we have been practising our 4 times table and division.  In English, we wrote our Cold Task and began to research the Arctic in preparation for our Hot Task - an information text on the Arctic.  In RE, we reflected on the Annunciation and how Mary must have felt when the Angel Gabriel told her the important news.

Year 4:

Year 4 has had a great week.  We have started our preparations for Advent.  In RE, we further explored the meaning of Advent and have changed our prayer areas too. We have completed some journaling in Maths as well as learning about factors and factor pairs.  We completed our cold task in English, and we have started our unit based on The Christmas Truce.  During History, we conducted a local study of the impact of WW1.  We were amazed by what we discovered.  We all thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas Dinner and are very much looking forward to spreading Christmas cheer when we sing at the hospital next week.

Year 5:

This week, in year five, we have started to practice our carols for the Carol Concert. The children have picked these up well and can sing nicely and loudly.  In Maths, we have been consolidating our fractions topic and started some journalling.  In English, we have practised parenthesis and cohesion.  In RE, we have started our advent topic.  In Science, we have started our caritas in action lessons on plastic pollution - very eye-opening!

Year 6:

This week, in Year 6, we have started our new unit in English about the Windrush.  In Maths, we are looking at measures.  In Reading we have started ‘The Raven’.  In RE, we are looking at the meaning of advent.  We have also been practising our carols for the Christmas concert.
