                            Friday 10th January 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Happy New Year and a warm welcome to 2025!

I hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Christmas holiday and are ready for the exciting year ahead.  The children have returned to school with great enthusiasm!

This year marks the Pope's Jubilee Year 2025, titled Pilgrims of Hope.  We have some superb events planned throughout the year for the children and families of St Modwen’s.  We are especially excited about the Jubilee Year launch day on January 24th, which will take place as part of the diocesan-wide launch alongside all the schools across the Birmingham Diocese.  A full timetable of events will be shared with you in the coming weeks.

I’ve already seen some fantastic work this week, particularly in reading lessons. Today, I visited Reception and Key Stage 1 classrooms to see how the children are progressing with their phonics.  It was wonderful to see so many children enjoying their new Book Bag Books, which complement their phonics books.  My sincere thanks to the PTA for funding these additional books for our school.

I would also like to wish our Young Voices choir the best of luck on Tuesday as they represent the school at Resorts World in the spectacular singing event, alongside around 9,000 other children from across the country.  What an amazing opportunity to be part of the world’s largest children’s choir!

Lastly, a personal thank you for the very kind and thoughtful cards and gifts before the Christmas break. They were not expected, but are deeply appreciated.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend ahead!

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

Welcome back to all the children and also the new children that have joined us from January.  It has been so lovely to see how the children are all settling back into the nursery routine and the new children joining in too!

This week we have revisited the Nativity story, sequencing the events and recalling the characters, and then we read the final part of the Nativity Story where the three Kings visited Jesus.

Reception:

It has been lovely to welcome the Reception children back to school this week. We enjoyed learning about the Christmas Story, remembering as many facts as possible!  In Maths, we have been looking at the number 0 and have impressed our teachers with our number knowledge.  We have also continued learning new phonic sounds.  Please remember to log any reading on Boom reader.  Have a restful weekend and we wish you all a Happy New Year.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have been learning all about the Christmas story and thinking about how Mary and Joseph felt.  The children have shown a brilliant understanding of what happened and have been able to write about the story.  In Maths, we have been adding within 20, using what we already know to help solve problems.  We have also enjoyed listening to the children tell us all about the wonderful time they have had at home during the Christmas holiday.

Year 2:

We hope you had a good and restful Christmas period.  What a wonderful week back we have had in Year 2.  The children have continued their work on shapes, counting faces and edges of 3D shapes.  In English, we read our new text, 'Anansi and the Golden Pot' and discussed unfamiliar vocabulary.  In RE, we thought about Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem and the difficulties they faced.  PE gave us the opportunity to create our own dance inspired by plants.  We have started our unit on plants in Science.

Year 3:

This week, we have completed our Cold Task in English, where we focussed on the use of descriptive language which we have learnt so far.  We have also started our new book in English, "I talk like a river", and began to innovate the story with our own characters.  In Maths, we have been learning about problem-solving using related calculations and multiplying a 1-digit number by a 2-digit number.  In RE, we thought about how the shepherds felt when the angel announced the news about the birth of Jesus.

Year 4:

This week, in Year 4, we have been focussing in RE on our unit of Christmas.  We have recounted the Nativity story, looking particularly at the importance of the angels and the part they played in sending out messages.  In Maths, we have been working on the relationship between multiplication and division.  In PE, we have started our new unit, which is basketball.  In Reading, we have started our new book 'How to Train Your Dragon'.  We hope you all had a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Year 5:

Welcome back year 5!  This week we have started our next English unit based on a tale of fear.  In Maths, we have finished column multiplication.  In RE, we have been looking at the Christmas story.  We enjoyed some dance to end our week.

Year 6:

This week we have started a new book - Tales of Terror.  In English, we are looking at scary stories.  In History we have considered how life is different now compared to the 1960s.  In Maths, we have been looking at percentages.  In RE we are looking at Christmas in more detail - in particular how different Gospels tell the story.
