24/01/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 24th January 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today, we were thrilled to join Archbishop Bernard Longley, Steve Bell (Diocesan Director of Education), and hundreds of schools from across the Birmingham Diocese to celebrate the launch of the Jubilee Year 2025 – Pilgrims of Hope.  This year, our students have been given a special mission through three key areas: Prayer, Social Action, and Fundraising.  It's an exciting opportunity for them to make a difference!  Ask your child about the beautiful Jubilee Year logo they explored this afternoon – I'd love to hear their thoughts!

Our Year 3 students had an amazing time on their educational trip to Derby Museum this week.  Check out our Facebook page for photos and highlights from their adventure!  Next week, our Year 5 students are gearing up for their exciting trip to the Space Museum in Leicester on Monday – they’re sure to have a blast!

And don’t forget!  Tuesday at 8:10am marks the start of our Spring Term, St Modwen’s Run Club.  I can’t wait to see many enthusiastic runners lacing up their shoes for a great start to the year!

Wishing you all a lovely weekend,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

The children have been very busy this week.  As well as consolidating our learning of the number 3 with counting, recognition and subitising 3, we have also linked the number 3 with 2D triangles as they have 3 sides.  The children continued to listen to the story of the Gingerbread Man.  They are so good at joining in, repeating the phrase and sequencing the events of the story!  The children have also been very busy in the creative corner designing and decorating their own gingerbread men.

Reception:

In Reception, we have been learning all about Baptism.  We shared some of our baptism photos and videos from when we were little.  It was very interesting to learn about the symbols!  In Maths, we have been learning about capacity.  We have thought carefully about the mass of an object and how many cubes it would take.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have continued their work on Stanley's stick.  We have tried really hard to remember full stops and capital letters when writing a letter to Stanley to tell him about our stick.  In Maths, we have explored doubling numbers to 20 and then used that knowledge to help us work out near doubles.  In RE, we have listened to 2 of the Parables from the Bible (The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son).  We discussed how we could link this to our Caritas in Action focus. Finally, we have created a Year 1 paper chain using the four colours in the Pilgrams of Hope logo to celebrate the launch of the Jubilee Year 2025.

Year 2:

This week, we have written our own stories about finding a magic object.  In Maths, we have been counting pence and pounds separately before counting pounds and pence together.  This was tricky for a lot of us, so some practise at home would be great.  In RE, we have started our unit, Parables and Miracles, by looking at 'The Wedding Feast and Cana' and 'The Calming of the Storm'.  We also revisited 'The Wedding Feast at Cana' during our class liturgy, where we discussed how we would have felt to have witnessed Jesus' first miracle.  In Computing, we continued our work on algorithms and wrote instructions to see if we could be accurate enough to inform our partner of what they needed to do.

Year 3:

This week, in Maths, we have tackled 2-digit by 1-digit division.  This requires really flexible use of timetable knowledge.  We have been very impressed by the progress pupils have made in this area this week, as it is definitely one of the trickier parts of the Year 3 curriculum.  In English, we have been planning our own story about overcoming a fear inspired by the brilliantly poignant book - 'I Talk Like a River'.  If you wish to learn more about this story, Ed Sheeran read it as a CBBC's Bedtime Story.  In Reading, we finished and evaluated 'The Iron Man' and have started our fantasy book - 'The Spiderwick Chronicles'.  On Thursday, we went to the Derby Museum for our school trip.  We took part in a Stone-Age workshop, which involved cave painting with red ochre, donning white gloves and touching animal bones which were 10,000 years old and exploring and sketching real Stone-Age tools.  We also spent time exploring the wonderful exhibitions - highlights included seeing an Egyptian mummy and viewing the beautiful artwork of Joseph Wright.

The staff at the museum were very impressed with how polite, enthusiastic and knowledgeable our pupils were.  We are very proud of them all. Have a wonderful weekend!

Year 4:

This week we have started our new topic in RE, which is entitled 'Jesus Teaches us how to Pray'.  So far, we have looked at the religion of Judaism and what is inside a Synagogue.  In English, we are reading 'The Twits' and have been thinking up our own tricks that the Twits might play on each other.  In Reading, we are thoroughly enjoying our book 'How to Train Your Dragon'.  In PE, we have been working with partners in gymnastics to create a range of counterbalances and have been brushing up on our basketball skills.  In Maths, we have started our new unit on length and perimeter.

Year 5:

Year 5 have really enjoyed reading Cosmic in this week's Reading lessons.  Their expression and fluency have improved.  We really do appreciate any reading you can do at home with your children and a polite reminder to log into Boom Reader if you have not already done so.  In English, the children have started their tales of fear.  In RE, we have started to look at marriage and holy orders.  In Science, we have started learning all about the Solar System in preparation for the trip.  We are all looking forward to this on Monday!  We have noticed some really positive changes to year five's behaviour this week, so let's keep up the good work!

Year 6:

This week we have been busy with our latest assessments.  We only have one more assessment week before SATs in May, so the gears are starting to move quickly and we are all working very hard.  We have also been continuing to plan our own scary stories.  In Computing, we recorded an advert for a computer of the future.  In RE, we are now looking closely at the Sacraments of Baptism and Confirmation.

Behaviour focus for this term:

Excellent listening

This involves tracking (looking at)  the speaker, having empty hands and sitting sensibly.

Litter-Pick in Our Community

We are calling on parent helpers to join us in a community litter-pick outside our school!

We are looking for a few parents who are happy to join their children in helping to pick up litter around the school grounds and along Tutbury Road, up to the Beacon Inn.

We will provide bin bags, litter-pickers, and gloves but you are more than welcome to bring your own equipment.

The litter-pick is planned for Friday, 31st January, and we will meet at 3:00 pm outside the school office.

If you would like to take part, please let the office know that you and your child are interested so we can organise a Litter-Picking Team.

This act of kindness is part of our school’s mission to ‘Live Simply’ and to act as stewards of God’s Creation.

Thank you for helping us care for our community!

NHS Pharmacy First Service

Did you know that the NHS Pharmacy First Service enables children and adults to get convenient access to healthcare advice and treatment where appropriate, for seven common conditions without the potential delay of having to wait for a GP appointment? Accessing the service may mean that can help children feel better and back to school as quickly as possible, as well as supporting parents/carers to also get better if they are unwell with one of the conditions covered under the service.

There is no need to make an appointment; parents or carers can pop into their local Boots pharmacy with their child and ask for help under the service.

Support for the following conditions can be accessed under the service, free of charge (unless NHS prescription charges apply):
