                                          Friday 7th March 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week has been full of excitement as we began our Lenten journey.  On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Dan and Emily from One Life Music for our whole-school retreat.  Their visit helped prepare us not only for the season of Lent but also for the Jubilee Year as Pilgrims of Hope.  On Wednesday, we came together to celebrate Ash Wednesday Mass with Father Stan, and the children have been reflecting on their Lenten promises.

Yesterday, we celebrated World Book Day, and I was thrilled to see so many children dressed in their pyjamas in honour of bedtime stories.  It was also heartwarming to see so many parents join us for storytime at the end of the day, with some even participating in the pyjama theme - well done for embracing the fun!

Looking ahead, we are pleased to welcome you to school for Parents' Evenings on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Please ensure you arrive promptly for your scheduled appointment and take some time to browse your child’s workbooks while you're here.  We also look forward to our Art Exhibition next week, with your children's artwork beautifully framed and displayed in a gallery-style setting in the hall.  It truly looks stunning, and the artwork will be available for purchase.  Additionally, we are delighted to have the Scholastic Book Fair on site, offering a wide range of books and reading-related items for your children to explore.  A percentage of the proceeds from both events will support the school - thank you for your continued support!

Next Friday, we will also host the Parent Lunch for Class 4A.  If you're attending, I look forward to seeing you there!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

What a lovely week we have had!  As well as starting our new topic, The Great Outdoors, Dan and Emily from Onelife Music spent the day with all the children in school on Tuesday and provided lots of activities to keep us busy throughout the day to support the Year of the Jubiliee, Pilgrims of Hope.  We went into assembly for the first time and joined in with the singing and signing, alongside all the children in Key Stage 1.

We have begun our Lenten Journey with new prayers and over the coming weeks the children will develop their own understanding of what Lent is about.

World Book Day was a success, with all the children dressed in their pyjamas, sharing their books from home with each other and then ending the day with the parents joining us for story time.

Reception:

What a wonderful week we have had in school!  On Tuesday we thoroughly enjoyed having Dan and Emily in school; what a fabulous way to start our Lenten journey.  We loved singing with them and learning new signs for words.  We also had a great day yesterday, dressing up in our pyjamas, reading lots of stories and drawing our favourite characters from books.  Have a restful weekend.

Year 1:

Wow!  A very busy week for Year 1.  We have finished writing our 'Hot Task', we wrote rules on how to keep the forest tidy and used our checklist which we created as a class to make sure we included all of our features.  We thoroughly enjoyed our visit by Dan and Emily - Miss Archer and Mrs Chadfield were so impressed with the children's beautiful singing.  We completed lots of activities in the classroom for World Book Day.  We even made a delicious Gruffalo Crumble!

Year 2:

What a busy week we have had in Year 2!  We started the week with an introduction to our new class text 'Look Up'.  We loved reading about Rocket's love of space and Meteor Showers.  We will eventually write a quest story based on this book and have had a practice go for our Cold Task. We also loved our 'Retreat Day' with Dan and Emily.  We really got involved in all the activities, had some lovely prayer time and wrote some beautiful prayers ourselves.  For World Book Day, we had a day of loving books.  Some of us read Michael Rosen's Chocolate cake and enjoyed joining in and then creating our own version of a chocolate bar.  We had lots of fun outside playing 'Free the people from the wolves' and loved having our grown-ups come in to share stories.

Year 3:

We have had a fabulous week in year 3 this week.  On Tuesday, we had a whole school retreat with Dan and Emily from One Life Music.  We enjoyed singing with them and reflecting on how we can spread hope during this Jubilee Year, whilst preparing to start our journey through Lent.  On Ash Wednesday, we began our Lenten journey with a whole school Mass and in RE following this, we thought about what the ashes represent.  On Thursday, we enjoyed our pyjama day whilst celebrating our love of reading.  We took part in a football and book quiz, a BBC Live lesson and several activities throughout the day to encourage us to read for pleasure and think about book genres we might like.

Year 4:

What a wonderful week we've had!  We have completed our Van Gogh-themed artwork and started our new Spanish unit of shape.  We continue with our learning about fractions in maths.  We shared the first labour of Hercules in English where we created a story map and used role play to bring this labour to life.  We had a fantastic day on Tuesday with Dan and Emily where we spent the day sharing hope with each other.  Ash Wednesday Mass was celebrated by us all together with Father Stan.  We all loved World Book Day and dedicating our day to reading for pleasure - thank you to those who were able to join us in the afternoon.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 5:

This week, in Year 5, we have had lots of exciting things going on.  On Tuesday, we had a retreat day in school where we had a visit from Dan and Emily to help prepare us for Lent and become Pilgrims of Hope.  For our retreat day, we created a footprint and wrote a prayer inside and made our crosses of hope to give as a gift.  Year 5 thoroughly enjoyed coming into school in their pjs for World Book Day.  They completed lots of book-themed activities about their favourite books.  In RE, we have started our Lent topic and have been learning about the story of the temptation of Jesus and how to be more like Jesus in our own lives.

Year 6:

This week we have been juggling lots of fun activities with assessment week!  We had a great time singing with Dan and Emily on Tuesday and left school feeling prayerfully prepared for Lent to begin.  We have been working hard revising and revisiting important Maths topics and we have started our Victorians topic in History, which is exciting!

OPAL:

The children have been enjoying the sunshine this week.  They have been able to spend more time on the field.

Groups of children have been working together to make some fantastic dens, which they have been improving daily.

We are always on the lookout for more loose parts for the children to play with - anything with wheels, spades, shovels for digging.

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

They have been able to spend more time on the field.

Groups of children have been working together to make some fantastic dens, which they have been improving daily.

We are always on the lookout for more loose parts for the children to play with.

Anything with wheels, spades, shovels for digging.

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.
