14/03/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 14th March 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

It has been a pleasure to welcome so many Parents into school this week for Parents' Evening.  I hope you found the sessions valuable in learning about your child's progress.  The standard of artwork on display in our Art Exhibition has been truly impressive.  If you’ve purchased your child’s artwork, we’d love to see it proudly displayed in your home!  Please share a photo with us via Facebook Messenger, and we’ll feature it in our virtual Art Gallery on our Facebook page.

A big thank you to the parents of pupils in 4A who joined us for Parent Lunch this afternoon — it was wonderful to have you with us.  Next week, we look forward to welcoming 4B parents.  If you'd like to join us, please book your lunch through Parent Mail.

This Sunday at 9am, I’ll be joining the St Modwen’s Running Club at Swadlincote Junior Parkrun as they aim to beat their personal bests following the latest Spring Term running course.  All pupils are welcome to join us, not just running club members — it could be a great way to inspire future runners for our Summer running club!

Have a super weekend.

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week we have been continuing our learning around 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.  The children are learning to sequence the days of the week and recalling what he ate each day.  We then looked at the lifecycle of the butterfly and what happens from the egg to the butterfly.  In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 6 and have introduced the ten frame.  Don't forget to show the value of 6 in different ways on your tens frame at home.

Reception:

We have had a lovely week in Reception, continuing our learning about minibeasts.  We have been learning about ladybirds and completed lots of super work.  We have been impressing our teachers with our writing skills and our knowledge of the ladybug lifecycle.  We also enjoyed seeing our ladybirds which we collaged in frames at the exhibition.

Year 1:

This week we have been reading the story 'Brian Bear's Picnic' and thinking about the journey that each character went on and who they met on the way.  We enjoyed acting out the story using our story map to help us.  In Maths, we have been exploring numbers to 50 by identifying how many tens and ones are in each number.  We have also been answering 1 more and 1 fewer questions and estimating where numbers would be on a number line.  In RE, we have continued to think about how we can follow Jesus during Lent.

Year 2:

This week, in Year 2, we have been very busy learning our 2, 5 and 10 times tables.  We have thought carefully about how we can work them out if it isn't something we can quickly recall.  We are going to keep practising these lots and lots so that we can give the answers speedily.  In English, we have been working towards writing our quest into space.  We practised using our adjectives to describe the moon and how we might feel if we were to visit.  In RE, we have explored the parable of the lost sheep and considered how important forgiveness is, particularly during Lent.

Year 3:

In English this week, we have been looking at coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.  In Maths, we have moved onto a new topic of measuring.  We have been learning about measuring millimetres, centimetres and metres.  In RE, we learnt about the Widow of Nain and reflected on how Jesus changed the lives of others through his miracles.  We celebrated a very special occasion of the children's first Reconciliation, which we have been preparing for since September. This was a huge success and an important step in their Sacramental journey.

Year 4:

This week we have been continuing our journey through Lent by discussing the Temptations of Jesus, the parable of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector and by joining Dan and Emily at Open for Lent.  In English, we have been sent many tasks from Hercules in order to help us learn about his labours and improve our writing skills.  In Reading, we have been reading 'Charlotte's Web' and discussing the feelings of the different characters.  Our rehearsals for the Easter play are in full swing, and we cannot wait to show you the final play.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5 we have been back to routine!   In English, the children have written some great openings focusing on dismissing their monsters.  They all followed the structure amazingly!  In Maths, we continue decimals, percentages and fractions.  In Science, we have started forces.  In PE, we continue basketball and gymnastics.  In RE, we have looked at the teachings of the Apostles.

Year 6:

This week we have continued our Victorian topic in History.  We have compared modern day life to life in Victorian times, and we have looked at the significant life events of Queen Victoria.  In PE, we have continued to harness our attacking and defending skills in Netball.  We have been enjoying reading 'Street Child' in English, and we are looking forward to planning our next Hot Task next week.  In Maths, we have moved on to area and perimeter and have continued to revise important arithmetic methods.

OPAL:

The children have been enjoying the sunshine this week.  They have been able to spend more time on the field.

Groups of children have been working together to make some fantastic dens, which they have been improving daily.

We are always on the lookout for more loose parts for the children to play with - anything with wheels, spades, shovels for digging.

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
