21/03/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 21st March 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s edition of our school newsletter!  It has been a busy and productive week, highlighted by our Catholic Schools Inspection.  I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all parents who took the time to complete the questionnaire.  Your feedback was carefully considered by the Inspectors, and we truly appreciate your input.   We will share the report and outcome with you as soon as it is published.

Today, we had the pleasure of welcoming our Year 4B parents to join their children for lunch.  It was wonderful to see so many of you in school, and I hope you enjoyed your time with us.

As we continue to celebrate the Jubilee Year, we have already enjoyed a number of special events.  Looking ahead, we are excited to host a Jubilee of Sports Week in June, during which we will celebrate all things sporty, including our sports days - a change from the traditional July schedule.  Please check our school calendar for more details, and we hope to see many of you there.

A quick reminder that our students will be taking part in the Big Lent Walk on April 4th, 2025, to raise money for CAFOD.  Your support and encouragement will mean a great deal to the children as they take on this meaningful challenge.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend as we approach the Fourth Sunday of Lent.

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week, we have been reading 'Jasper's Beanstalk' by Nick Butterworth.  The children continue to sequence the days of the week and recalling what Jasper did each day.  In Maths, we have been using descriptive words e.g long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller and tallest to describe the length and height of ourselves, caterpillars and beanstalks.  Ask your children to give examples of these describing objects around the home and garden.

Next week the children will be planting their own beans just like Jasper!

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about frogs.  We looked at the life cycle of a frog and discussed the names of each stage of the cycle.  We have been reading the story Tad and drew fishes and tadpoles to match the story.  In Maths, we have been learning about 1 more and 1 less and used frogs to help us to know what number comes before or next.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have been exploring scripture and thinking about how they can follow the words of Jesus in their everyday life.  Romeo, the school bear, has been helping us design posters to show our learning.  In Maths, we have continued to explore places valued by numbers to 50, and we have been counting in 10s to solve problems.  We are also very proud of the children who took part in our school Mass this week, which was led by Year 1.

Year 2:

This week we have been focussing on the importance of 'forgiveness'.  We have considered why it is important to consider this during the season of Lent.  We have been saying, 'Our Father' each day to continually ask God for forgiveness.  We have written our 'Hot Tasks' in English and have created some amazing quests.  In Maths, we have looked at division, what the symbol is and how we can divide numbers by 2, 5 or 10.

Year 3:

We have continued our journey through Lent in Year 3 this week by reading the parable of the Paralysed Man in RE.  We reflected on how Jesus showed his Love, Power and Forgiveness to those around us and how we can change during Lent to be more like Jesus.  In Maths, we have been looking at equivalent measures including metres, centimetres and millimetres.  In English, we have been practising punctuating direct speech with inverted commas and all other relevant punctuation.

Year 4:

Year 4 have created a mythical creature for Hercules to face as a labour during English.  We have been tackling fractions in Maths, where we have been adding and subtracting fractions. During RE, we wrote our own modern-day parables.  We have been rehearsing for the Easter play.  During Science, we wrote a fact file on Alexander Graham Bell.  During Music, we created haikus and brought these to life with music.

Year 5:

This week, we have started our new unit of area and perimeter and have been exploring the perimeter of rectangles and rectilinear shapes.  In English, we have started writing our quest story hot task about a warrior that is given a task to defeat a beast.  We are enjoying reading Cosmic during our reading lessons and have been exploring themes within the book.  In RE, we have explored scripture that teaches us about forgiveness and how we can use this in our lives.  In Science, we have started planning our parachute investigation.

Year 6:

This week we have continued reading 'Street Child' in English, and we have begun planning our Hot Task.  In Maths, we have continued to explore the area of different shapes.  In Science, we have investigated light and how our eyes process different images.  In PE, we have continued to harness our netball skills in readiness for a match.  We very much enjoyed Mass this week with some beautiful singing!

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
