28/03/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 28th March 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It’s been an exciting and sporty week here at school!  On Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome Joel Fearon - a Team GB sprinter and bobsledder - who spent the day working with all our children from Years 1 to 6.   Joel was a truly inspiring presence, demonstrating dedication, resilience, and a real passion for sport.  He left a lasting impression on both pupils and staff, and we’re so grateful for the experience.

If you still have a sponsor form at home, please feel free to bring it in on Monday. A huge thank you for your generous support - every contribution helps us fund fantastic opportunities like Joel’s visit and supports the purchase of new sports equipment for our children.

Today, we’ve also had the pleasure of welcoming a brilliant group of students from Burton College, who are completing their Football in Education qualifications in partnership with Burton Albion Football Club.  They delivered engaging sessions to our Year 1 and 2 pupils, and I was incredibly impressed with their professionalism and how enthusiastically our children participated.

A quick reminder that the clocks go forward this weekend as we step into British Summertime on Sunday - don’t forget to adjust those alarms!

Looking ahead to next week, we’re very excited about our Big Lent Walk for CAFOD, taking place on Friday.  We’re inviting every child to "Bring a £, walk a KM" as we aim to complete a virtual pilgrimage to Walsingham and back.  It promises to be a meaningful and fun event for all involved.

Wishing you all a restful and sunshine-filled weekend!

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

As we continue with our story, 'Jasper's Beanstalk', we have been sequencing the story and creating our own story maps.  This has also linked very nicely to our Maths topic, sequencing daily events, rhymes and stories.  We have planted our beans, and we are watching very carefully what happens.  Let's hope they grow to be as tall as Jasper's!

Reception:

This week, we have been continuing our Lenten journey, where we have been thinking about the things we are hopeful for.  We have shared with each other what acts of service we would like to do during Lent.  In Maths, we have been consolidating our numbers to 10 and have worked very hard to recite our number bonds to 10.

Year 1:

This week we have been learning to compare lengths and heights, and have been measuring using lots of different equipment.  We have had lots of fun!  In RE, we have been thinking about the story of Zacchaeus and the changes he made in his life, and we have been thinking about how we are changing during Lent.  In English, we have enjoyed creating our own journey story ready for our hot task next week!

Year 2:

This week we loved learning about Emmeline Pankhurst and how she changed the rights for women.  We wrote some amazing sentences about her in English and created a campaign poster for her in History.  In Maths, we have concluded our learning about multiplication and division.  Ask us questions on our 2, 5 and 10 timetables.

Year 3:

In Maths this week, we have been practising adding lengths.  We remembered to convert all measurements to the same unit before using column addition to add them together.  We also practised subtracting lengths, again converting all the measurements to the same unit and using column subtraction to find the answer.  In English, we have written a Portal story about Ancient Egypt, focusing on punctuating direct speech correctly.  In RE, we recapped on Jesus' miracles and role-played Jesus healing the paralysed man.  We are working hard practising for the Easter play.

Please remember to provide your child with a plain black t-shirt for the performance as soon as possible.

Year 4:

This week we have been full steam ahead with rehearsals for the Easter Play.  It looks great, and we are so excited to perform this.  We would love every show full, so please come along.  In RE, we were learning about the Beatitudes and the teachings of Jesus.  In English, we have been writing our Hot Task based on the labours of Hercules.  We have created a 13th labour for him to face!  In Maths, we have now completed our work on fractions and will move on to decimals next week.  Keep practising those timetables!

Year 5:

Year Five have had a busy week.  Their highlight was taking part in the circuits with the athlete.  In RE, we have looked at the Sacrament of Reconciliation as a celebration of God's forgiveness.  In English, we have started a new unit building up to non-chronological reports.  In Maths, we have just finished area and perimeter and will be moving onto statistics.  In Science, we continue forces -  carrying out an experiment to find out whether the size of a parachute affects air resistance.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6, we have started our new English topic, which is all about writing persuasively!  We have been looking at some well-known fast-food restaurant websites and considering how well they persuade us to buy their products.  In Maths, we have started our angles topic and have been using a protractor to measure different types of angles.  In PE, we have continued our Netball topic, learning the rules and positions in a game scenario.  In RE, we have been considering the Examination of Conscience and the important role this plays in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  We have also been lucky enough to have Romeo the bear with us this week!

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
