04/04/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 4th April 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

What a fantastic week we have had at school!  Today, the entire school community - from our youngest Nursery children to our Year 6 pupils - took part in The Big Lent Walk to raise money for CAFOD.  It was wonderful to see the children walking together with such enthusiasm, knowing that their efforts will help support those in need around the world.  A huge thank you to all our families for your generous donations and encouragement!

We were also delighted to welcome parents from 5A into school this week for parent lunches.  It was lovely to see the children enjoying a special meal with their families, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to join us.

Looking ahead, we are eagerly anticipating Year 3 and 4’s Easter Play next week. This moving performance will beautifully depict Jesus' journey to the cross, helping us reflect on the true meaning of Easter.  We will also end the week with our Easter Raffle - tickets are still available from the Mini Vinnies throughout next week, raising funds for Father Hudson’s Good Shepherd Appeal.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support.  I wish you all a restful and blessed weekend.

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

We have a new story focus this week, 'Oliver's Vegetables' by Vivienne French.  We continue with our theme of growing and planting outdoors and have looked at lots of different fruits and vegetables and how they grow.

In RSE, the children have been learning about the internet, how we use it and how it helps us to do lots of great things.  We also looked at examples of what we can do without the internet, such as playing outside, going swimming, playing a board game etc.

In Maths, we have been talking about positional language, e.g. on, under, in front, behind, next to, beside, and inside and outside.

Reception:

In Reception, we have been learning all about sunflowers.  We have looked at the life cycle of a sunflower and how it begins.  It was interesting to see how it grows! In English, we have been reading 'The Tiny Seed', which showed us the beautiful journey of a seed through the different seasons.  We also had a go at writing instructions on how to plant a sunflower seed.

Year 1:

This week Year 1 have been exploring the features of fact files and we have enjoyed using them to answer questions.  In Maths, we have been busy exploring mass and capacity.  We have been using our key vocab to compare.  In RE, we have started to look at the events of Holy Week.  We have learnt all about Palm Sunday and the Last Supper.  Next week we will be writing our own fact files about our favourite animals, and we will continue to learn all about Holy Week.

Year 2:

This week we have had lots of fun measuring different objects, looking closely at cm and m.  In English, we have practised using imperative verbs to help write a set of instructions.  We will be using these in our Hot Task next week.  In Science, we thoroughly enjoyed finding microhabitats around the school site and then choosing materials from the grounds to make something suitable for the minibeasts.

Year 3:

In Maths this week, we worked on understanding perimeter, as well as calculating and measuring this.  In English, we started our non-fiction unit where we are writing a newspaper report.  You can support your child with this at home by looking at examples of newspapers and online news sources to help them to understand what a newspaper report consists of.  In RE, we have begun thinking about the events of Holy Week and why they are important.  We have continued to work hard on practising the Easter Play this week, ready for our performances next week.  Please remember to send your child with a black t-shirt, if you haven't already, in preparation for this.

Year 4:

Year 4 have completed their hot tasks this week and they are brilliant.  The children have written a labour for Hercules using their own mythical creature. They brought this to life with figurative language and a range of devices from their writer's toolkit.  During Maths, we have been focusing on tenths as fractions and decimals.  We are continuing to focus on our timetables in preparation for the multiplication check.  Our final rehearsals for the Easter play are happening. Please ensure you have sent your child's costume in.  We are looking forward to you coming to share the children's efforts with you next week.  Please make sure you have booked your tickets.  During RE, we have been exploring Holy Week.  We are continuing to enjoy Charlotte's Web and have improved our summarising skills this week.

Year 6:

This week, we have been learning about the internal angles of a triangle and trying to calculate missing angles using known facts.  In English, we have been planning our persuasive writing and linking this learning to the Catholic Social Teaching of Stewardship.  We have continued our Victorian topic, more specifically, how the Industrial Revolution impacted Burton.  We have also been busy preparing for SATs, looking at how to answer some past Reading papers and spotting how to avoid common mistakes.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
