11/04/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 11th April 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

The final week of term has been jammed-packed with fantastic learning and extra-curricular events.  Year 3 and 4 pupils took centre stage for their Easter production this week, which was performed to a wonderfully high standard.  Every single pupil contributed through their artwork, their acting skills, their reading skills and their beautiful singing to create an exceptional representation of Jesus' journey to the cross.  Anyone who was lucky enough to watch it was left with a lasting message of how special Jesus' sacrifice for us was.  Well done to all parents and the staff who have helped prepare them for this event.  A special shout out to Mr Read for writing the script and the lyrics to all the songs!

We hosted Chocolate Bingo after school on Thursday, which was a massive success with lots of fun and chocolatey prizes for all involved.  We welcomed Year 5B parents into school for their parents' lunch this afternoon.  This morning, we held our end of half-term Excellence in Reading and Homework assembly - well done to all our winners, who are great role models for other pupils.

Thank you for all your ongoing support this term.  We wish you all a very restful and blessed Easter holidays.  We look forward to welcoming pupils back on Tuesday 29th April.

Warm regards,

Mr Quinn

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

Nursery thoroughly enjoyed a lovely morning with Kate and Richard from Little Acorns Forest School.  The children started with the parachute game, then lots of choosing between decorating wooden plaques with the food the hungry caterpillar ate, then manually drilling holes in wood, planting beans, a picture hunt, making beanstalks with noodles and foam, also with pipe cleaners and leaves, making butterflies and just having a great time with their friends!  We all sat down together for a picnic and talked about our favourite part of the morning.

Also this week, we have been learning all about Holy Week.  We shared the bible story of Palm Sunday and role-played Jesus arriving in Jerusalem.  The children are beginning to understand that we make the sign of the cross at the beginning and end of prayers to remind us that Jesus died on the cross. We will continue with the Easter story after half-term, wishing you a happy and holy Easter.

Reception:

This week we have been finishing off our learning about sunflowers.  We looked at the life cycle of a sunflower and enjoyed discovering the process.  In Maths, we have been learning all about 3D shapes and looking at the different complex patterns within shapes.  We have worked really hard this half-term.  Miss Butt and Miss Mallinson hope you all have a lovely Easter break!

Year 1:

This week we have tried hard to write our hot task in English, we have written a fact file about an animal.  We made sure to use a title, subheadings and joined 2 sentences together using 'and'.  In Maths, we have looked at mass and volume and explored using water and cubes.  In RE, we have explored the stations of the cross.  We discussed what happened at each station and then walked around the hall to see each station along the wall.  We hope you all have a lovely Easter and a well-earned rest.

Year 2:

We have had a very busy week in Year 2.  We have written a set of instructions on how to become a Suffragette, thinking carefully about using imperative verbs.  We then compared our significant people and thought about how they have made our communities better.  We have also been very busy in Science.  We have experimented with ice and considered how it melts against rocks.  We hope you have a wonderful Easter!

Year 3:

We have had a super busy week in year 3!  We are very proud of the children and how well they performed in the Easter play.  In English, we have continued looking at Newspaper Reports and their structure ready for our Hot Task after half-term.  We had Dogs Trust visit on Wednesday to teach us about the importance of dog safety and how to behave around dogs.  Over the last 2 weeks, we have also had a workshop with Helen from Phunky Foods where we learnt how to make a healthy snack and we thoroughly enjoyed trying these snacks after.  In RE, we have been learning about the Last Supper and how the disciples must have felt when they found out the news of Jesus' death.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4 we have been celebrating the success of the Easter Play, with our three performances.  The children were incredible, and we are so proud of them.  We hope you all enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed performing it. In RE, we have been looking at the reasons why Jesus died on the cross and the events of Holy Week.  In English, we have been looking at possessive apostrophes.  In Maths, we have continued our topic on decimals and practising our timetables ready for the check in June.  In Science, we have been looking at sound and using decibel meters.  We ended the week with an orienteering Easter Egg Hunt.  We hope you all have a restful Easter holiday.

Year 5:

In Year 5 this week, the children have been writing their hot task all about Vikings.  They learnt about whom the Vikings were, where they were from and their raiding tactics.  In Maths, we have finished our statistics topic by reading and interpreting a range of different tables.  For British Science Week, the children created their own pulley systems on a range of different objects around the classroom.  In RE, we finished off our Holy Week topic by exploring the Stations of the Cross in the hall and learning about the Story of Passover.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6 we have been learning more about algebra, 3D-shapes and nets in Maths.  In Reading, we have been practising answering comprehension questions.  In RE, we have been studying Holy Week.  In Science, we have been taking part in Science week experiments.  We have been practising for our SATs too.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
