02/05/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 2nd May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Welcome back to the summer term!  I hope you all had a restful and joyful Easter break – Happy Easter to you all.

It’s been a busy start to the term, and I am delighted to share some of this week’s highlights with you.

On Wednesday, our Mini Vinnies had the honour of attending the prestigious Good Shepherd Mass at St Chad’s Cathedral, Birmingham, celebrated by Archbishop Bernard Longley.  The children represented our school beautifully, showing great reverence and maturity throughout the day.  It was a wonderful opportunity for them to gather with other schools and celebrate our shared commitment to faith and service and present the fundraising total from our Easter raffle of £196.22.

Our Year 1 children had an exciting trip to the Children’s Country House in Sudbury this week.  Staff at the venue commented on their impeccable behaviour, curiosity, and lovely manners – a real credit to their families and our school community.  Well done, Year 1!

We also marked the beginning of May with a special May Day Parade for Our Lady on Thursday, 1st May.  Thank you so much to all parents for your generous donations of flowers and plants.  They have been planted around the school grounds and in our prayer garden, creating a vibrant and peaceful space for all to enjoy.

Today, we were delighted to welcome our Year 6A parents to share in Parent Lunch with their children - thank you for joining us.

A quick reminder that school will be closed on Monday 5th May for the Bank Holiday.  We wish all our families a safe, restful, and enjoyable long weekend.

Warmest wishes,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

Welcome back, we hope you've all had a lovely Easter break.  We have started the week by revisiting the Easter story.  The children have made Easter cards and engaged in activities to celebrate Easter.  We listened to the story 'We're going on an Egg Hunt', reinforcing positional language to describe where the eggs are hiding.  In Maths, we have been learning about ‘more’ and ‘fewer’ and making towers using new language to compare them.  Finally, a big thank you for all your flower and plant donations for our Mary procession.  The children were very prayerful during this time.

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about the Easter story and Jesus' resurrection.  We found out that Jesus' body wasn't in the tomb and that it was Mary Magdelene who discovered that it was empty.  In Maths, we have been looking at numbers beyond 10 and how to represent this using different manipulatives.

Year 1:

Year 1 had a brilliant time on their school trip on Wednesday!  We were so impressed with their behaviour throughout the day and all the children enjoyed exploring the old toys and learning about toys from the past.  In Maths this week we have started to learn to count in 2s and 10s.  We have been super impressed with how well the children are able to do this!  The children also enjoyed the Mary procession.  Thank you for your kind donations of flowers and plants.

Year 2:

It has been wonderful to welcome in the Summer term with some lovely weather this week.  In Year 2, we have made the most of it, earning extra breaktime by writing persuasive letters to say why we deserve it.  In Maths, we have been looking at a half and a quarter.  In Science, we had fun cutting up fruits and vegetables to see if they were bulbs or had seeds.  In Computing, we learnt about making sure we can trust the information we see on the internet and keeping safe by using trusted sources.

Year 3:

We have had a great start to Summer term in Year 3 this week.  We have written our Hot Task in English - a newspaper report on the secret of Black Rock, using fronted adverbials and different organisational devices.  In Maths, we have been measuring and comparing Mass.  In RE, we learnt about the Road to Emmaus and thought about how Cleopas and Simon felt before and after they recognised Jesus.  On Thursday, we celebrated the beginning of the month of Mary by taking part in a short service, then processing Mary around our school field up to the prayer garden.  We said a prayer for Mary before laying flowers for her.

Year 4:

We've enjoyed the sunshine this week and have been extremely busy.  We are really focusing on preparing for the timetable check which will be after half-term.  The children need to know all of their tables up to 12 x12.  Quick recall of these is essential.  Please ensure that you dedicate time to this every day.  We have completed our cold task in English and our setting for our next fiction piece is Venice.  We are continuing with Charlotte's Web in our reading lessons and this week we have improved our inference skills.  We divided a 2-digit number by 10 in Maths and also looked at hundredths as fractions.  Athletics and football are our PE topics this half-term, and we are looking at habitats in Science.

Year 5:

The children have settled back in really well.  We have looked at Shackleton's journey in the Antarctic and thought about how he would have felt through emotive language in English.  In Maths, we have started angles.  In RE, we have looked at the Easter Vigil.  In science, the children loved looking back at their baby photos for our science lesson on the human lifecycle - thank you for bringing these in!  We also took part in a special parade in the sunshine for Mary.  Happy first week back!

Year 6:

This week we have been practising lots of maths, reading, grammar, punctuation, spelling and reading in preparation for our SATs starting on Monday 12th May.  We have also started a new writing unit based on a disaster and to help us with this, we have started reading 'The Explorer'.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
