Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Today we are celebrating! Our Catholic Schools’ Inspection report has now been published, and I am absolutely delighted to share that we have been graded OUTSTANDING in all areas! This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our staff, the enthusiasm of our pupils, and the unwavering support of you—our parents and carers. You can read the full report by following the link below.

Catholic Schools' Inspection Report

To mark this wonderful achievement, the children enjoyed a surprise celebration today complete with bouncy castles and outdoor fun—well deserved by all!

It was also a pleasure to welcome the parents of 6B into school today for our special parent lunch. Thank you for joining us; your presence made it special for the children.

Looking ahead, next week is SATs week for our Year 6 pupils. We hold them in our prayers as they approach these assessments with confidence and calm. We know they will do their very best—and we remind them that while SATs are important, they are only one measure of the many gifts and talents God has given them.

Wishing you all a peaceful and sunny weekend.

Warmest wishes,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week in Nursery we have been learning about Bears.  We have looked at different types of bears, where they live and what they eat.  Our story is 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen, where the family in the story go in search of a bear.  The children are very excited to find out what happens next week in the story!

In Maths, we are learning about the properties of 2D shapes.  We will be building on this next week when we learn about 3D shapes.

On Thursday we celebrated VE day with lots of activities in the classroom and then a picnic outdoors with Reception classes listening to wartime music.

Reception

Reception have been busy writing interesting sentences about farm animals.  We have learnt about the different animals on the farm and the role of tractors too! This afternoon, we finished the week with a celebration where Mrs Sherratt treated us to bouncy castles.  We had so much fun!

Year 1:

This week in Year 1, we have read a new book in English.  We loved how it links to part of our History topic, toys in the past.  We thought carefully about each part of the story in our story maps.  In Maths, we have continued our learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s.  In RE, we have thought about the Paschal Candle and have labelled each of its parts.

Year 2:

This week in Year 2, we have learnt to identify and find a third in Maths.  We had a debate in English about how to practise using imperative verbs for persuasion.  In Computing, we used Chromebooks to locate features on an interactive map.  In Science, we considered what seeds and bulbs need to grow and looked at our local environment to see where plants were growing well.  We made Paschal Candles in RE and wrote about the symbolism of them and other special signs we associate with Easter.  In Geography, we looked at what a coastline is and where we would find a beach.  We also explored what the physical and human-made features of a coastline might be.  We enjoyed a picnic on the field on Thursday to commemorate VE day.

Year 3:

In Year 3 this week, we have been learning about the difference between capacity and volume.  We have also measured and compared them.  In English, we read The Green Ship by Quentin Blake and have started to innovate this by creating our own setting.  In RE, we looked at the Breakfast On The Shore and thought about why Jesus decided to serve breakfast to Peter.  On Thursday, we learnt about the importance of celebrating VE day and had a lovely celebration picnic.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4, we have been continuing our topic on Italy and volcanoes.  In English, we are writing a story set in Venice.  We have investigated the different types of volcanoes and where they are around the world.  In RE, we have been working on our unit for Easter by comparing the four Gospel accounts of the Resurrection.  In PE, we have been working on our Football and Athletics skills.  In Maths, we have continued to work on our timetables by practising for the check on a daily basis.

Year 5:

This week, we have enjoyed lots of exciting activities with our VE Day picnic and our inflatables treat for our Catholic School's Inspection. In maths, we have been learning about angles and how to measure angles using a protractor. In English, we have been researching about Ernest Shackleton, ready to write a biography. In RE, we have explored the Easter Vigil Service and read accounts of the Resurrection of Jesus. In Geography, we have used maps to locate mountains across the world.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6, our focus has been on preparing for the SATs tests next week.  The children have been working extremely hard to prepare themselves for the tests.  We have also been continuing with our new writing topic based on surviving a natural disaster.  Please ensure that your children have a restful weekend and a good night's sleep before they come to school on Monday morning.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
