16/05/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 16th May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

To begin this week’s newsletter, I must extend my heartfelt congratulations to all our Year 6 pupils who have completed their SATs tests.  Their positive attitudes, cheerful spirits, and sheer determination throughout the week have been nothing short of inspiring.  They have approached each challenge with vigour and resilience, and they truly are a credit to both the school and their families.  We are all incredibly proud of them.

This coming Sunday marks the Fifth Sunday of Easter, and it will be an especially meaningful one for many of our Year 3 pupils as they celebrate their First Holy Communion.  This is a momentous occasion in their faith journey, and I offer them my warmest wishes as they receive this special sacrament.  Please do keep them in your thoughts and prayers, both for Sunday and as they continue to grow in their faith.

Looking ahead to next week, we have a number of exciting events taking place. Throughout May, we are supporting Mary’s Meals, and as part of our fundraising efforts, we will be holding a cookies and milkshake sale after school on Tuesday and Wednesday.  If you would like to support this cause, please bring cash to purchase any items.

Also, on Tuesday we are delighted to be hosting our OPAL Stay & Play event.  This promises to be a lovely opportunity for families to join in with our outdoor play and learning initiative.  Places can be booked via Parentmail, and I do hope to see many of you there.

Wishing you all a relaxing and sunny weekend.

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

We have continued our learning of Bears by finishing the story 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt'.  The children were very excited to find out what was in the cave.  They have sequenced the story into pictures and have also created a story map to support recall.

In Maths, we have been learning all about 3Dshapes and their properties using the language curved, flat and faces.  Let the children have a 3D shape hunt around the house to see if they can find cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and see if they can describe their properties to you.

Reception

This week, we have been learning all about the Easter candle.  We looked at the candle in a lot of detail and learnt that the studs represent Jesus being nailed to the cross.  In Maths, we have started learning about shapes and how we can make these shapes from different things we can find.

Year 1:

Year 1 have tried really hard this week.  We have explored our class book in more detail and have completed our boxing up and our story maps.  In Maths, we have continued learning our 2s, 5s and 10s.  Keep practising at home!  We have also started thinking about sharing into equal groups.  Have a great weekend.

Year 2:

This week we have been looking at unit fractions and non-unit fractions.  We have also looked at how to find 2 and 3 quarters of an amount.  Please continue to practise fractions at home.  In English, we have continued to look at the story 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley' by Sarah Roberts.  We looked at using adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more interesting.  We can't wait to write our Hot Task next week, persuading people to not pollute the ocean.  In RE, we looked at the story of 'Doubting Thomas' and the 'Road to Emmaus'.  We considered how important it is to always show faith.  In Science, we learnt all about plants and the conditions they need to grow.  Finally, in Geography we had lots of fun comparing Whitby beach with Jamaican beaches.

Year 3:

This week we have learnt about direct speech, pronouns and conjunctions in English.  In Reading, we have been reading our book - 'The Fastest Boy in the World', and answering comprehension questions.  In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominators.  This is closely linked to times-table knowledge, so please keep practising.  Also, remember to keep learning your KIRF statements.  In RE, we have been learning about the Risen Jesus and how he is celebrated in Mass through the Eucharist.  We have also been busy preparing for First Holy Communion, which is happening on Sunday.  We wish all our pupils the best of luck for this special day.

Year 4:

We have been comparing and ordering decimals in Maths and have written our hot task in English where our focus was on using inverted commas for direct speech.  Times tables continue to be our focus as we move closer towards our times tables check in June.  During PE, we continued with our athletics unit and worked on our throwing techniques.  We investigated the impact that humans have on habitats during science and looked at the positive and negative impacts we have on the biodiversity of habitats.  We created our own Triptych in RE and have learnt about animals in Spanish.  We enjoyed music with Miss Inwood and Mrs Drake this week.

Year 5:

This week we finished our shape topic in Maths.  We have looked at Jesus' ascension in RE.  In English, we have looked at varying sentence starters in preparation for our biography of Shackleton.  In PE, we enjoyed some games of rounders.  In Science, children have looked at giving advice to their elderly selves on how to stay healthy.

Year 6:

This week we have been working incredibly hard to do well in our SATs.  After weeks of putting in effort, after many sessions of interventions and booster groups, we were able to finally show what we could do.  The results won't be back until the start of July, so we will wait for those in anticipation.  There are many things in the pipeline between now and the end of the year, so we will still have lots of work to do, but it will be a joyous time of year, our last term at Primary School, so we will enjoy it and embrace it!

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
