23/05/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 23rd May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It’s been another great week here at school!  Thank you to all our parents for your incredible support this week.  From helping the children raise money for Mary’s Meals through our successful bake sale, to joining us for our OPAL Stay and Play session, your involvement is appreciated.  I'm also grateful to everyone who supported the PTA by helping with or attending the school discos on Thursday - it was fantastic to see the children enjoying themselves so much!  If any parents are interested in joining the PTA and getting more involved in our school community, please do get in touch via the PTA Facebook page - we’d love to hear from you.

Finally, a quick reminder that we break up today (Friday) for Whitsun week.  I hope you all have a restful and enjoyable break, and we look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday, June 2nd.

Warm regards,

Mrs Sherratt

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

This week the children have been reading 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy.  They are beginning to hear and recall the missing words at the end of each sentence during the re-telling of the story, and we are continuing with segmenting and blending CVC words in our phonics lessons.  We have learnt how to make a jam sandwich following a set of instructions, to take on a picnic to space just like little bear!

In Maths, we have been learning all about capacity, filling and emptying containers in the classroom with coloured water using the language, full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty, half full, more, less.

Reception

This week in Reception we have been learning about free-range hens and eggs. As a class, we have been debating if we'd rather be a free-range chicken or a caged chicken.  In Maths, we have been exploring shapes and looking at how we can make pictures using shapes.  We have also worked very hard with Phonics this half-term!

Year 1:

This week we have really enjoyed making moving pictures in DT.  We have explored lots of different techniques and created a brilliant moving picture.  In Maths, we have been finding half of the objects and groups.  The children have impressed us with their knowledge!  In English, we have been using our creative writing skills to write a diary entry based on the book 'The Old Toy Room'.

Year 2:

We have had a fun-filled week, designing and making a castle with a drawbridge in DT this week.  We enjoyed learning how to create the mechanism to move the drawbridge and then using it as part of our final project.  In English, we wrote persuasive letters to children within the school to ask them not to pollute our oceans.  We have been learning to tell the time on an analogue clock in Maths and would really benefit from some extra practice at home.  Have a wonderful half-term break.

Year 3:

This week, in Maths, we have been working on calculating fractions of amount with all the pupils making good progress on this tricky topic.  In English, we have planned and written a story based on the Green Ship.  In PE, we continued to learn how to pass and move into space in Basketball.  It has been DT week, and we have made some wonderful, moving pneumatic toys.  We wish you all a restful half-term.

Year 4:

We have thoroughly enjoyed DT week in Year 4!  We researched healthy pizza toppings and from this created our own pizzas.  We even made the dough from scratch!  We then put our toppings on, baked them and, best of all, ate them! They were delicious!  However, the debate about whether pineapple belongs on a pizza is still raging on!  We used our knowledge of making the pizzas to create a set of instructions for our Hot Task in English.  In Maths, we have been focussing on our timetables (keep going over half-term) and have been working out problems involving money.  In RE, we have been looking at the ascension and the reactions of the disciples.

Year 5:

Year 5 loved this week as they made money containers.  They did so well and should be proud of them.  We also finished our English Hot Task (a biography on Shackleton).  In Maths, we have looked at coordinates.  In RE, we looked at Prayers for the dead.  In PE, we played some very competitive games of rounders-such fun!  Have a great break everyone!

Year 6:

This week, in Year 6, we have been writing our 'disaster' stories in English.  In Maths, we've been doing some mental maths.  In RE, we have been learning about what happened after Jesus rose from the dead.  We've also been designing and doing our fairground rides in DT.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
