13/06/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 13th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

What a joyful and action-packed week it has been!

This week marked our much-anticipated Jubilee of Sports Week, a special celebration of physical activity, teamwork, and school spirit.  A heartfelt thank you must go to Miss Wright, whose dedication and brilliant organisation ensured the week ran smoothly and was a great success.  Our children in Key Stage 2 enjoyed a lively rounders' tournament, showing impressive sportsmanship and enthusiasm, while the whole school football tournament brought pupils of all ages together in a wonderful display of community, competition and fun.

We were also thrilled to welcome so many of you to our Sports Days this week. Your encouragement from the sidelines made such a difference to the children and helped make the events memorable.  Thank you for taking the time to support your children and for helping to create such a positive atmosphere.

Looking ahead, a gentle reminder that this Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity – a day on which we also observe the Day for Life, a time to reflect on the gift of life and our shared responsibility to protect and cherish it in all its forms.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Miss Smith

Deputy Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

As we continue our topic of Africa the children have explored African mud painting, creating patterns and painting animals.  We have listened to different types of music from around the continent and looked at some of the different instruments.

In Maths, we have been looking at what number comes after different numerals to 10.  We have used a number line, made a human number line and rolled a dice to support the learning of this.

The rain held off for a lovely sports morning and the children seemed to really enjoy it.  Thank you for all your support and joining in with the activities.

Reception

In Reception this week, we have been very busy!  We have been developing our Maths skills by exploring repeated patterns.  We were very good at this and were able to identify where it was being repeated.  We also consolidated our knowledge of grouping and sharing.  In English, we continue to look at Australia and the Great Barrier Reef.  Our teacher took us on a plane to Australia, and we decided to write a postcard to Mrs Sherratt.  We tried really hard to remember our capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.  We ended the week doing Sports Day with our parents/carers coming along to support us.  We worked very hard and enjoyed all the activities we participated in.

Year 1:

We have been really impressed with the effort of Year 1 this week as they have completed their phonics screening check!  We are so proud of each of you!  Year 1 have also tried really hard in each of their sports day activities and represented their teams well!  We have continued to learn about Pentecost and have each written our own prayer.

Year 2:

In Year 2, we have really enjoyed our week.  We carried on learning about time in Maths.  In English, we looked at our new text, 'Journey' by Aaron Becker.  We learnt the different features that castles had for defence in History and in Science, we looked at the life cycle of humans.  On Thursday, we really enjoyed sports day. What a wonderful week!

Year 3:

This week we have been working hard on our assessments.  Mr Quinn and Miss Illsley have been very impressed with all their hard work and effort!  We will be learning about time in our next Maths unit.  Please keep practising this skill at home, alongside timetables and the KIRF statements which can be found on our school website.  In RE, we have begun our Pentecost unit and are learning about how the Holy Spirit transformed the lives of those who received it.  In Science, we conducted two experiments.  The first one was using plants and food colouring to demonstrate how water is transported in plants.  The second one was dissecting a flower to understand what each part looks like and what it does.  We have also celebrated our Jubilee of Sport, which involved sports day, an interclass rounders' competition (well done 3B) and a house team football tournament.

Year 4:

We have had a very sporty week in Year 4!  On Tuesday, we competed against each other in a rounders' competition.  It was a very close match, with all the children being very supportive of each other.  4A scored 21½, whilst 4B scored 24½.  On Wednesday we competed in Sports Day in the morning.  We took part in some races, including the Egg & Spoon and Sack race.  Then we did some field events, including the hammer throw, javelin and long jump.  Well done to all the individual winners and the Red team for winning overall.  In the afternoon, many of us helped out with organising and scoring the Y5/6 Sports Day.  On Thursday, we competed in a House Football Tournament, we had a lot of fun with this.  We also had a busy week completing our multiplication check.  The children tried their best, and we are hopeful of some excellent results.

Year 5:

This week in Year five has been very busy.   The children have coped well with the changes in the timetable.  It was the Jubilee of Sports week and the children took part in rounders and football tournaments, as well as Sports Day.  We have started our new topic in Science (living things and their habitats) where we looked at the life cycles of mammals.  We have also finished our Geography topic on mountains and maps.  Our assessments have also started this week.  Well done Year five.

Year 6:

This week 6 we have been very busy rehearsing for our production.  As well as this, we have been carrying on with our reading about 'The Wonder World'; our English about fossils; our Maths about the Theme Park and our RE about Pentecost.

It has also been the Festival of Sport Week, so we have been taking part in Rounders, Athletics and Football competitions.

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
