20/06/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 20th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It has been a joyful week here at school, that has reflected the spirit, creativity and community of our pupils.  We began the week with a beautiful Deanery Mass at Lichfield Cathedral, where our Year 4 children joined Bishop Timothy in a truly special celebration of faith.  That same day, our talented Year 5 pupils took to the stage at Birmingham Symphony Hall for a fabulous Ukulele concert that left us beaming with pride.  On Thursday, we joined schools from across the country to make our Jubilee Pledges – a powerful reminder of our role as pilgrims of hope, leaving a lasting legacy from this Jubilee Year.

We have been blessed with good weather today for our summer Forest School Day, with children enthusiastically embracing outdoor learning and exploration. RB enjoyed an exciting trip to Packington Farm today, with RA eagerly anticipating their turn next week.

Looking ahead, we invite families to join us at the Junior Parkrun in Swadlincote’s Memorial Park this Sunday, and don’t forget – Tuesday is a non-uniform day in exchange for a bottle donation for our PTA’s Bottle Tombola, part of our Feast Day Garden Party on 4th July.

Tickets to the Garden Party on 4th July will be available to purchase through ParentMail, I hope you and your family will be able to join us.

Have a wonderful weekend.

Mrs Sherratt

Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

As we continue our learning of the continent of Africa the children have been listening to the story  'We're Going on a Lion Hunt'.  We have looked at and discussed the similarities and differences to 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and joined in with the repeated phrases.  In Maths, we have been looking at what comes before different numerals to 10.  You could practise this at home, looking at numbers to see if the children can say the number that comes before them. We finished the week off with our Forest School day, when the nursery children went hunting for Kevin the carrot in the great outdoors!

Reception

This week Reception has been learning all about plastic pollution.  They discovered that it was important to throw rubbish in the bin because it can sometimes end up in the sea.  This is how pollution happens.  We also included this in our pledge on Jubilee Pledge day.  We spoke about how we could be God's stewards and look after the world.  We ended with our favourite Jubilee song.

Year 1:

In Maths this week we have moved on to looking at numbers 50-100.  We had to make sure we had the tens and ones in the right place and checked that our numbers were formed correctly.  In English, we continued to look at our class text 'Jehvon goes to Jamaica'.  We thought about what he did on each of the days and used our senses to write sentences using adjectives.  As a year group, we have thought carefully about what we pledge to do in this Jubilee Year, living as the hands and feet of Jesus.  Finally, we got outside and enjoyed a day at Forest School!

Year 2:

This week in Year 2, we continued our work on the story The Journey and ended the week by boxing it up, focusing on sequencing and key events.  In Maths, we explored tally charts and tables, learning how to collect and interpret data.  We completed our RE topic on Pentecost, understanding its significance.  The children enjoyed a special Jubilee Pledge Day filled with themed activities, and finished the week with an engaging Forest School day, where they had the chance to explore and learn outdoors.

Year 3:

This week in Year 3, we have been studying fronted adverbials in English.  We have also created our own character for our Victorian-themed rags-to-riches story, which is inspired by the Charles Dickens' classic 'Great Expectations'.  In reading, we explored what themes are in books and then analysed our book - Fastest Boy in the World - for different themes.

We were very impressed by their work and how they then linked themes across books they had read.

In Science, we studied germination and seed dispersal.  We have planted our own magic beans (which I swapped my cow for) in class and are observing how they develop. On Thursday, we celebrated our Jubilee Pledge Day.  We created some artwork, our own pledge and performed a poem.  In PE, we enjoyed learning cricket and tennis - we encourage all children to practise throwing and catching at home.  In Maths, we have been learning how to tell the time on an analogue clock and will be continuing next week, alongside learning how many days there are in each month.  Please practise this skill at home.

Year 4:

Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed their week this week.  We had the pleasure of attending Mass in Lichfield Cathedral, led by Bishop Timothy on Monday.  We went as Pilgrims of Hope through the City to St Joseph's.  What a wonderful Mass it was!

We recreated an erupting volcano using cola, mentos, vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.  It was an exciting experience.  During RE, we concluded our unit on Pentecost.  We have been converting the 12-hour clock to the 24-hour clock in Maths and, in English, we have explored emotive language and rhetorical questions.

Year 6:

This week we've been busy, busy, busy again.  On Monday, we practised our performance and went swimming.  On Tuesday we learnt about psalms and the Magnificat.  On Wednesday we learnt about Brazil in Geography; Adaptation in Science; colour mixing in Art; and the Olympics in Spanish.  On Thursday we had Pledge day and thought about promises we could make and take to Secondary School.  Friday was Forest School Day, when we made dens and took part in other activities.

'Important notice regarding SS Mary & Modwen RC Youth Group'

Please remember there will be no Youth Group in June.
With a little help, there will be one in July (Friday 25th July 19:00-21:00

However, due to only having one of our 2 leaders available, we are looking for a couple of parents who would be willing to stay.  If you are able to help in this way, then please get in touch using sarah-louise.durk@talktalk.net or 07772437379 or message our FB page.

There will be no Youth Group in August due to the Summer Holidays.
Extra leaders are always useful and very welcome, so any member of Ss Mary & Modwen RC Church willing to join us, please also get in touch too.

Many thanks
Angela & Sarah-Louise'

Calling All Parents, Local Businesses and Trades!

Here at St. Modwen’s Catholic Primary School, we are proud to be an OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) school, offering 16 different play types at lunchtime to inspire creativity and innovation in our children.

To make this a success, we need hundreds (if not thousands!) of loose parts for our pupils to explore, build, and play with.  If you or someone you know can help, we would love any of the following donations:

Please get in touch if you have items, and you are not sure if we can use them or not.

* Plastic tubing & pipes

* Buckets & spades

* Waterproof material

* Cable reels & crates

* Tyres

* Old clothes & dressing-up items

* Empty plastic bottles

* Brushes (long-handled & paint brushes)

* Drain pipes & gardening tools

* Old books, colouring books, felt tips & pens

This is a fantastic way to reuse and recycle while helping us create amazing play opportunities every day for every child!

Please drop a message to opal@st-modwens.staffs.sch

Please look out for the first to three on ParentMail - this is a list of household items OPAL is looking out for in the coming weeks, which will enhance the children's play.
