27/06/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 27th June 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It has been another busy and memorable week here at St Modwen’s Catholic Primary School.  One of the highlights was the joy of welcoming Bishop Timothy Menezes to school on Thursday.  He came to visit our Year 6 pupils as they continue their preparations for the Sacrament of Confirmation, which will be taking place this Sunday at SS. Mary and Modwen's Catholic Church at 11am.  The Bishop was deeply impressed by the thoughtful responses from our pupils and the warm welcome extended to him by both Year 4 and Year 6.

A sincere thank you must go to Miss Goodman and Mr Mawhinney for their dedication and commitment to preparing the children so beautifully for this important sacrament in their faith journey.  The care and hard work that has gone into the planning and teaching has not gone unnoticed, and we are very grateful.

Looking ahead, next week we are delighted to be celebrating our Jubilee of Prayer Week.  Parents are warmly invited to attend two special events: St Modwen's Got Talent on Thursday afternoon from 1:30pm to 3pm and our Jubilee Garden Party on Friday afternoon from 1:30pm to 3:30pm.  The garden party promises to be a wonderful community celebration, featuring live music, an ice cream van, inflatables and a variety of fun stalls.  If you are interested in hosting a stall, please do get in touch with the school office to arrange this.

Finally, we wish all our families a relaxing and enjoyable weekend.  Please take care in the high temperatures predicted.

Miss Smith

Deputy Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week...

Nursery:

We are continuing with our story, 'We're Going on a Lion Hunt' by sequencing the story and drawing our own story maps to reinforce this.  In phonics the children continue to work really hard by  listening to and saying the sounds to support the blending of CVC words.

In Maths, we are consolidating our learning of repeating patterns by continuing ABAB patterns and creating our own by drawing, painting and printing.

We wanted to thank all the parents for joining us for lunch today.  We hope you all enjoyed it as much as the children did.

Reception

This week we have had an exciting week continuing our learning about Australia.  We have started to look at the rainforests that are found in Australia and the different features of them.  In Maths, we have been using positional language to explain where things are in the pictures.  In RE, we have been looking at the different objects which would be found in a church, learning their names and what we use them for.

Year 1:

This week we have completed our auditions for the Talent Show.  We have also worked on our numbers 1-100, seeing if we could think of a number that is one more and one less.   We have also made and compared numbers with our friends using <,>, = symbols.   In English, we have innovated our character for our journey story and described the train we will travel on to London using adjectives.

Year 2:

In Year 2, we’ve had a fantastic week of learning!  In RE, we've begun exploring The Mass and considered the different parts and our responses.

In English, the children have amazed us with their imaginative portal stories, filled with creativity and adventure.

In Maths, we've been using positional language to describe where things are, helping us build strong spatial awareness.  In Science, we’ve been learning about the fascinating life cycles of frogs and butterflies, observing how these incredible creatures grow and change.  What a brilliant week it’s been!

Year 3:

We have been busy again this week.  We have been learning how to tell the time accurately to 1 minute in Maths.  In English, we have been looking at a WAGOLL text and analysing the features of good writing so that we can include them in our own.  In Reading, we have learnt about how authors use vocabulary choices and descriptive features like similes and metaphors to impact the reader.  In RE, we finished our Pentecost unit by looking at the role the Holy Spirit has to play in the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  In Science, we have been studying seed dispersal and making links to why our pets are always covered in seeds!  In Geography, we are really getting stuck into our canal topic in preparation for our school trip on 8th July.  As mentioned before, parent helpers for the trip are more than welcome. Please speak to us after school or email the school office if you would like to come along.

Year 4:

This week, we have been using our persuasive writing skills in order to write a letter to Mrs Sherratt persuading her to let us get a class fish.  We are hoping she loves our letters so that we can get our fish on Monday.  In RE, we have started our new topic on Rights and Responsibilities by talking about the messages the disciples gave after Pentecost and who shares the Good News of Jesus today.  In Maths, we have started a new topic on angles and direction.  We have also made our very own edible Roman roads in history, as well as researched what the Romans did for us!

Year 5:

This week, we have started writing our hot task about finding a magical object story.  The children have explored using a wide range of devices to create an exciting and descriptive story.  In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting decimals using column methods and mental strategies.  In RE, we have been learning about some famous religious shrines and reasons why someone might go on a pilgrimage.  In Science, we have been learning about the life cycle of amphibians.   We have also had our talent show auditions ready for next week!

Year 6:

This week we have been as busy as ever.  We have been preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation and had a great discussion with Bishop Timothy.   We have also had a few transition visits.  We have been practising our production.  In RE, we have been looking at: the structure of Mass; how we pray; and how other religions pray.

We have written our hot tasks about the discovery of a fossil on the beach.

'Important notice regarding SS Mary & Modwen RC Youth Group'

Please remember there will be no Youth Group in June.
With a little help, there will be one in July (Friday 25th July 19:00-21:00

However, due to only having one of our 2 leaders available, we are looking for a couple of parents who would be willing to stay.  If you are able to help in this way, then please get in touch using sarah-louise.durk@talktalk.net or 07772437379 or message our FB page.

There will be no Youth Group in August due to the Summer Holidays.
Extra leaders are always useful and very welcome, so any member of Ss Mary & Modwen RC Church willing to join us, please also get in touch too.

Many thanks
Angela & Sarah-Louise'
