Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Welcome back to school after what I hope has been a restful summer break.  It is always a real pleasure to see our school full of energy once again as we begin another exciting year of learning.  At St Modwen's we are proud of our culture of excellence.  This is reflected not only in the way we approach our learning and behaviour, but also in the way we present ourselves each day.  Wearing our uniform smartly is a simple but powerful way of showing pride in ourselves, in each other, and in our school community.  I would like to take this opportunity to thank all parents and carers for the support you give in helping us maintain these high standards.  Your efforts—whether that be ensuring children come in well-presented, prepared, and ready to learn, or encouraging them to do their best—make such a difference in sustaining the positive ethos we value so highly.  There are some incredibly shiny shoes around school this week – fantastic!  A reminder that ties for all pupils are part of our uniform and trainers are not permitted other than for PE lessons.  Thank you also to families who have labeled everything, it really does help!

As we continue our Jubilee Year as pilgrims of hope, we look forward to exciting events ahead, including a whole school pilgrimage and linking with an overseas Catholic school for shared liturgy.  We’re delighted to have the swimming pool back at St Modwen’s; following past success, children in Years 2–6 will enjoy lessons over the next two weeks. Welcome back and enjoy the sunny weekend.

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

Let's start by welcoming all the new children, their parents and carers to the family of St. Modwen's.  Thank you for bearing with us at the beginning of each day, as expected, there are a few tears as the children are leaving their parents and carers, but I would just like to reassure you that this doesn't last long, and the children are soon exploring the indoor and outdoor learning environments.

The next couple of weeks the focus will be to settle the children in, help them to explore the activities and begin to introduce the routines of the day.

Reception

What a fabulous week we have had in Reception. The children have all settled in so well after the summer break. We have had lots of fun outside this week, making lots of new friends.  We are looking forward to another fun-filled week next week.  Have a wonderful weekend.

Year 1:

Our Year 1 students have settled in wonderfully and are quickly adapting to the routines of school life.  They have been eager to participate in all activities and have shown great enthusiasm for their learning.  It's been impressive to see how hard they’ve been working, especially with their writing.  We are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm they bring each day.  Keep up the great work, Year 1

Year 2:

Year 2 have had a fabulous start to the year!  We have been thinking about God's creation and how we can follow in Jesus' footsteps by looking after the environment and each other.  In Maths, we have been counting in the 10s and recognising 10s and 1s.  In English, we have been reading Poles Apart and learning about the different countries which the characters visit.  In RE, we have been learning about the Old Testament.  We have written prayers and promises about God's creation.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a fantastic start to the new school year.  It has been so nice to see everyone come back with such enthusiasm!  In Maths, this week we have been looking at place value and exploring how a number can be partitioned into tens and ones.  The children have shown their fantastic knowledge of grammar in English and have even written a letter to their future selves including their hopes and ambitions for the year to come.  We have also spent time this week thinking about how we can be Pilgrims of Hope.  We have read The Good Samaritan and considered how we can follow this example ourselves to help others.

Year 3/4:

We have had a lovely week back in Year 3/4!  We have got straight back into the swing of things.  In Maths, we have started our topic on place value and have already begun to learn our timetables.  In English, we are using our Geography topic on earthquakes to build up to a hot task where we are writing a story about characters who travel to a destination where they witness a natural disaster.  In reading, we have started our book 'The Butterfly Lion'.  In RE, we have been thinking about what it means to walk in the footsteps of God and have been learning about the Creation story.

Year 5:

What a wonderful week we've had in Year 5!  We have started our text in Reading lessons, which is Kensuke's Kingdom.  We have predicted what we think will happen using evidence on the cover and in the blurb.  During Maths, we started our place value unit.  We have investigated Roman numerals as well as numbers up to 100,000.  We enjoyed creating a courtroom scene in English after writing a cold task of a warning story.  During RE, we compared Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. We have enjoyed our work on Catholic Social Teaching this week, where we have followed in the footsteps of Jesus and thought about those around us who are poor and vulnerable.

Year 6:

This week we have come back ready and eager to face the year ahead.  We have started our new reading book - Brightstorm.  We have started writing about settings using the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as our model text.  In Maths, we have started place value.  We are looking at the dignity of the human person in CST and in RE we have started to look at the bible.
