19/09/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 19th September, 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

This week our whole school community came together as true pilgrims, braving the very wet weather to journey to the Burton Washlands and the statue of St Modwen.  It was a moving experience, reminding us of our place within the Jubilee Year as Pilgrims of Hope.  The children showed great spirit and reverence throughout, and we are so proud of the way they embraced this special occasion.

Back at school, our portable swimming pool has been a great success for many of our Key Stage 2 pupils.  With one week left, we look forward to welcoming pupils from Years 2–6 who are still able to enjoy this valuable opportunity.

We are currently seeking nominations for a new parent governor to join our governing body.  This is a vital role within our school community, helping to shape and support our mission.  The deadline for nominations is Monday 22nd September.  Further details on how to apply are included in this newsletter—I would warmly encourage you to consider putting yourself forward.

Our consultation to join the St Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Multi Academy Company is ongoing, and we would be very grateful for your comments via the link in the letter below.  Your views are important as we move forward together.

Finally, a heartfelt thank you to the many parents who attended curriculum meetings this week.  Your engagement and partnership with us make such a difference to your children’s learning.  Next week we look forward to welcoming the parents of children in Years 1, 2, 3 and Reception. Please check the school calendar for details.

With every blessing,

Mrs A Sherratt

Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

This week we have started looking at our Autumn term topics, Nursery Rhymes and All About Me.  We have been learning the nursery rhymes ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ and ‘1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive'.  Learning rhymes enables children to become interested in the rhythm and patterns of language and, because they are repetitive, it can also support the development of memory.  So why not try and sing along with the children at home!

In our All About Me topic we have been looking at ourselves and our facial features, labelling them and experimenting with drawing and painting our self-portraits.

In Maths, the children have been learning the colours – red, blue and yellow by sorting colours and completing some lovely collage work.  Next week we will learn the secondary colours and a new nursery rhyme of the week.

Reception

This week, we have been learning about the Creation story in RE.  We discovered that God created lots of different things and by the end of it, he was happy.  In Maths, we have continued to count to 5 and form our numbers correctly.  Next week, we will be looking at matching and sorting in Maths as well as reading 'A little bit brave' in English.

Year 1:

This week, Year 1 have been busy exploring numbers 1 to 10.  We have counted from any number forwards and backwards, then we have thought about numbers that are 1 more than and 1 less than.  In English, we have explored La Luna as a journey story, created our story map and made a list of all the things we would take to the moon with us.  In RE, we read the story of creation and thought carefully about what we are thankful for.

Year 2:

We have had another busy week in year 2! In English, we have Boxed Up and written out Hot Task with a focus of capital letters, full stops and adjectives for description. In Maths, we have been learning about number lines to 100 and practicing our KIRF Statements for Autumn 1. In RE, we learnt about Abraham and Isaac and also Jonah and the whale. We thought about why it is important to listen to God. On Thursday, we went on our whole school pilgrimage to the St Modwen statue on Burton washlands. We had a short prayer service and wrote our own prayers to share on the day.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a wonderful week!  They have begun their first Hot Task of the year in English, where they are writing their very own journey story based on our class text.  We continue to look at place value in Maths and have started to look at numbers up to 1000 – we'll continue this next week.  In Science, the children have been extremely enthusiastic when looking at skeletons and how they help both animals and humans to move.  Finally, they had a fantastic time during our whole school pilgrimage to St Modwen's statue, where they wrote some beautiful prayers and displayed excellent behaviour – well done Year 3!

Year 3/4:

This week in Year 4, we had a lovely pilgrimage to the Washlands area.  Here we had a spiritual walk to the statue of St Modwen and held a special liturgy there.  In RE, we have been learning about the story of Joseph and his brothers.  In Maths, we have been working on number lines and Roman numerals.  We have started our new Science topic on invertebrates and vertebrates and have been classifying living things.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5, we’ve been busy sharpening our maths skills by learning how to round numbers to the nearest 10,100 or 1,000!  In English, the children have been getting creative, designing their own characters as part of their preparation for an exciting “hot task” coming up soon.  In Science, we explored different materials and discovered which ones are best at keeping things warm.  In Geography, we travelled all the way to Mexico, learning about its amazing rivers, mountains, and deserts.  Year 5 have also been on a pilgrimage to see the St. Modwens statue which they really enjoyed.  We would also like to thank all parents that attended the curriculum meeting.

Year 6:

This week we have been learning about Cain and Abel in RE considering how revenge and disharmony are themes in our world today.  We have been swimming and practising water safety skills.  In English, we have planned and started our descriptive writing unit.  In Science, we looked at grouping organisms. In Geography, we looked at the Taj Mahal. In Maths, we have looked at negative numbers, rounding and ordering numbers.
