26/09/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 26th September, 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It has been another wonderful week at St Modwen’s, and I am delighted to share some highlights with you.  Our pop-up swimming pool has been a huge success over the past two weeks, with pupils not only developing their water confidence and safety skills but also sharing just how much they’ve enjoyed the experience - it has been a joy to see their enthusiasm.

The academisation consultation to join St Gabriel the Archangel Multi Academy Trust is ongoing, and we continue to welcome your comments; these will be carefully reviewed and responded to by governors once the consultation period concludes.

On Monday, we will be celebrating the Feast of St Gabriel the Archangel, and we will send our best wishes to colleagues at St Gabriel the Archangel CMAT as they officially launch with a joint Mass. St Modwen’s will be represented on this special occasion by myself, Mrs Taylor, and our head boy and head girl.

Wishing you all a super weekend.

Mrs A Sherratt

Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

What a busy week it's been for the children this week! They have learnt two new nursery rhymes, 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star' and 'One potato, Two potato' along with actions too!   In Maths, the theme has continued around the secondary colours and our daily activities have reflected this.

We have also been learning about all the things God has made in our Creation topic and singing a song to remind us how wonderful our world is.

Next week as we continue our topic, All about Me, we will be looking at our families.

Please help us if you can and send in a family photograph either via email: nursery@st-modwens.staffs.sch.uk or upload a photograph on your Tapestry account for the children to share.

Thank you.

Reception

This week, Reception enjoyed starting a drawing club where we read "A Little Bit Brave."  We loved drawing pictures of the characters and the setting and writing letters to create special codes!  In Maths, we have been looking at matching objects and patterns.  We have started to think about our topic – Marvellous Me by using play-dough to make the people who are in our family.  We have continued learning lots of sounds in phonics and have even started reading and writing simple words using the sounds we know.

Year 1:

This week we started to look at our new book in English "The Kings Pants".  First, we learnt all about our King.  Then, we wrote some sentences using our new vocabulary!   In Maths, we have started looking at fewer, more or the same.   We have looked at the symbols for more than, less than and equals to.  In RE, we continued our learning about God's creation and heard the story of St Francis of Assisi.  We thought about how we could be more like St Francis.

Year 2:

This week in Year 2 we have started our new book on Lost and Found.  We have had great fun predicting what our new book is and drawing our text maps to help retell the story.  In Maths, we have continued our Place Value unit, considering carefully how to count forward and backwards in 2s, 5s and 10s.  We have also had a look at how to compare numbers using the correct symbols.  In RE, we explored psalms and wrote some beautiful ones ourselves.  Finally, we had a great time in the pool!!  What a week!

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a great week continuing their learning about place value to 1000 in Maths and have also enjoyed getting to grips with some more timetables!  In English, we have started a new book to help us understand more about our topic of India - the children have also started to learn more about the country in their Geography lessons too.  In RE, we have researched and explored all the different parts of the celebration of Mass.  The highlight this week was definitely the children getting to practise their swimming – they all gave their absolute best and had a great time!

Year 3/4:

This week in Year 4, we have been putting the final steps together in English so that we are ready to tackle our Hot Tasks next week.  We have been using speech, compound and complex sentences, conjunctions and fronted adverbials.  In Maths, we have now completed our place value unit and will be moving on to addition and subtraction.  In RE, we have been focussing on the story of Jacob's Dream and creating a family tree of Abraham's ancestors.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a busy and exciting week of learning!  In Maths, we’ve been practising our rounding skills and applying them to reasoning problems.  In English, the children impressed us with their “hot task” writing, making excellent use of speech and relative clauses to bring their warning stories to life.  Our RE lesson focused on the Beatitudes, where we explored their meaning and how we can live them out in our daily lives.  The highlight of the week was swimming -everyone showed great determination and progress in the pool!

Year 6:

This week some of us have carried on with our swimming, while the rest of us have played football and handball in PE.  In RE, we looked at what happened to the Israelites in the desert with Moses and acted out a drama.  In English, we have completed our 'portal' stories.  In Maths, we have practised addition and subtraction methods, and we have used multiples and factors to answer questions.  In Geography, we looked at Chichen Itza as a tourist attraction.  In PSHE we looked at our God-given gifts.  In Science, we used branching databases to classify animals.
