Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we enter October, the month dedicated to Mary, the children will be praying the Rosary together each day.  Pupils are most welcome to bring their own rosary beads into school; alternatively, these can be purchased via ParentMail for £2.50. This week, you will also have received a letter regarding our recent Parent Governor nomination process.  I am delighted to inform you that Mr. Mindas Burba, parent of B. Burba in Year 5, has been duly elected unopposed and will now serve as a Parent Governor.  We are also currently recruiting for a Nursery Nurse to join our Early Years team.  The vacancy can be found on our school website, and I would be very grateful if you could share this information with anyone who may be interested in applying.  While we are discussing recruitment, I would also like to mention that we have some limited pupil spaces available across the school.  Again, please do share this with family, friends, or neighbours who may be looking for a school place.

On a more personal note, I am really excited that our school running club is starting up again at 8:10am on Tuesday 7th October.  This is something I look forward to each term, as it gives me the chance to run alongside the children, encourage them, and see their confidence grow week by week.  We still have a few spaces left, and I would love nothing more than to see every one of them filled.  The club is not about speed, but about enjoyment, teamwork, and celebrating progress - and each term always finishes with the junior parkrun in Swadlincote, which is a fantastic event for the children and their families.  Please do consider signing your child up via ParentMail, if you haven’t already; it really is one of the highlights of our school week!

Whatever the weather brings, I hope you all manage to enjoy a restful weekend in spite of the rain,

Mrs A Sherratt

Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

This week's nursery rhyme is 'Five Currant Buns in a Baker's Shop'.  The children have enjoyed role playing this rhyme by being a currant bun, a buyer or being a baker.

In Maths, we have started our new topic 'Matching', where the children have had to match buttons, wellies and build a tower to match a picture.  This will continue next week, so I wonder if your child could help you at home by matching socks in the washing basket, or shoes on the shoe rack.

A big thank you to all the parents that helped to complete their child's 'All about Me' booklet for our display and for sending in the family photos.

Reception

This week we have been reading 'Superkid' and thinking about the magical adventure he goes on in his school.  We have been drawing, mark making and writing using our phonics skills, whilst also remembering the correct letter formation.  In RE, we have been thinking about all the things we are thankful for and put together a beautiful prayer to God.

Year 1:

This week we thought about families and celebrations in RE.  We considered the importance of our families and talked about events and celebrations we have attended.  In English, we carried on reading our story 'The King's Pants'.  We drew the story on a story map.  Then we designed our own pants and wrote sentences using adjectives.  In Maths, we have explored comparing objects and numbers.  We made caterpillars using beads to compare which had the fewest beads and the most beads.

Year 2:

This week we have been exploring poetry in English, creating kennings about penguins and writing poems inspired by our senses.  In Maths, we focused on adding and subtracting, exploring number bonds to 10 and related fact families.  In Science, we learnt about the needs of amphibians and reptiles, while in Geography we discovered what life is like for people living in the Arctic.  In RE, we reflected on how Mary might have felt on her journey to Egypt and discussed ways we can live in the image of God.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been busy this week enjoying poetry!  We took part in an online workshop and have read a special book exploring rhyming for poetry week.  In Maths, the children have been exploring adding and subtracting tens from bigger numbers.  We continued to read our book 'The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark'. While reading, we looked at the different characters and their feelings.  We have also shared our favourite Bible stories and shared how the message from them helps us to follow in God's footsteps.

Year 3/4:

We have been enjoying Poetry Week in year 4.  Not only have we been reading different forms of poetry, we have been writing our own too.  We have written about a magical doorway and a patio area of our garden.  We also attended a live lesson by performance poet Tomfoolery.   In Maths, we have started our topic on Addition and Subtraction by looking at column methods.  In RE, we have researched the work that Cafod does across the world and have started a new topic entitled 'Jesus, Light of the World'.

Year 5:

For National Poetry Week, we have been learning a different poem each day and having a go at writing our own poems in our English lessons.  In Maths, we have been learning how to answer multiple-step addition and subtraction questions.  In Reading, we have continued to read Kensuke's Kingdom and have explored the relationship between Michael and Kensuke.  In RE, we have started our Baptism topic by learning about how John might have felt when he baptised Jesus.  In Science, we have evaluated our science experiment.  In Geography, we looked at the similarities and differences between different places where people might want to live in Mexico.

Year 6:

This week we have started a new non-fiction unit in English about animals.  In Maths, we have practised multiplication methods.  In Reading, we have continued with Brightstorm.  In RE, we looked at the story of Esther.  In PSHE, we watched Paradise Street and thought about some changes that take place during puberty.  In PE, we practised dribbling and passing in Handball and Football.  In Computing, we looked at Brute Force Hacking.  In Geography, we looked at The Great Wall of China and in Science we looked at classifying plants and identifying trees.
