17/10/2025 School Newsletter

                                          Friday 17th October 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Thank you to all who joined us for the Attendance Assembly this week - it was wonderful to see so many of you and to share the important message about the value of good attendance.  Next week marks our Attendance Week, and the children are being challenged to become Attendance Heroes - Here, Every day, Ready, On time!   Each pupil will receive a bookmark to track their daily attendance, and those who achieve 100% attendance will receive a special certificate at the end of the week.

A reminder that Parents’ Evening booking slots go live on Monday 20th October for meetings taking place on 18th and 20th November.  This time, we are trialling a choice between a face-to-face meeting with your child’s teacher or an online appointment, giving families greater flexibility.

Our Mini Vinnies have also asked me to share their latest fundraising initiative for Mary’s Meals - Pocket Money for Porridge.  This simple act of kindness encourages children to bring in just 10p of their own money, or the equivalent of their pocket money, to help provide a nutritious school meal for a hungry child.  A small contribution can make a big difference - thank you in advance for your support. Thanks also from our PTA for the Chocolate and bottles that were donated today in preparation for our Christmas events and Chocolate Bingo event, which takes place next Thursday after school.  I do hope you and your family can join us for this fun fundraiser.  All funds raised at the event come directly back into the school to benefit your children.

Finally, thank you for your responses to the consultation on joining the St Gabriel the Archangel CMAT.  Governors will be sharing their response to the consultation comments next week, so please keep an eye on your inboxes.

Wishing you all a restful and happy weekend.

Mrs A Sherratt

Head Teacher

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

This week the children have been learning all about Harvest Time on the farm,  when the fruit and vegetables have been grown and collected from the fields.  We have looked at a variety of fruit and vegetables and talked about our likes and dislikes.  Other activities have included vegetable printing, making scarecrows, singing the nursery rhyme 'Old MacDonald had a Farm' and learning some of the Makaton signs for each of the animals on his farm!  Our Maths activities have been all about SORTING, sorting groups into different colours, sizes and also sorting 2D shapes.  Over the last two weeks, the children have taken part in Forest School activities where they have listened to the story 'Bog Baby' in the forest area with Mrs Whitley.

Reception

It has been Autumn week in Reception.  We have been learning all about the different signs of Autumn and talked about the different coloured leaves.  During the afternoon, we went on an Autumn walk and found conkers, acorns and leaves.  In Maths, we have been learning about 1 more and 1 less.  We challenged ourselves to write a number sentence.

Next week will be Diwali week, where we delve into this wonderful celebration full of colours and lights!

Year 1:

We have had another wonderful and busy week in Year 1!  In English, the children have enjoyed exploring stories, learning to retell them with expressive actions and using their creative skills to design and produce their very own story maps.  In Maths, we have been busy combining groups and counting the total to write addition number sentences, which has been fantastic for developing our problem-solving.  Meanwhile, in RE, we have deepened our understanding of the Mass and the special story of the presentation of Jesus in the Temple.

Year 2:

This week we have finished our learning around the North and South Pole by writing an information text all about penguins.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed researching penguins and have found out some amazing facts about them. In Maths, we have added beyond ten and thought of ways to simplify our addition by adding to the next 10 first.  In RE, we explored why Jesus chose some of his disciples and then thought about why we follow Jesus and how we can be his disciples today.

Year 3:

This week, Year 3 have been showing off all of their hard work and learning in assessment week!  The children have completed assessments in Maths, Reading and Spelling and have impressed us so much with their knowledge and attitude towards their work.  Well done!  In RE, we have been thinking about the Baptism of Jesus and how it might have differed from Baptism today, and in Science we have been looking at how to have a healthy, balanced diet.

Year 3/4:

This week we have been enjoying some World War poetry in readiness for our topic and trip after half term.  In English, we have been using our knowledge from our Geography topic on earthquakes to create a non-chronological report.  In RE, we have been looking at some religious art showing the Baptism of Jesus.  In Maths, we have started our new topic on calculating area.

Year 5:

Year 5 have worked extremely hard this week during our assessments.  We are extremely proud of each and every one of them for being so dedicated to their work.

Next week is DT week and we would be very grateful for any paper straws please.

During RE, we have continued to focus on Baptism and explore how John the Baptist felt when he baptised Jesus.  We have explored different artist impressions of Jesus's Baptism at the River Jordan.  We enjoyed football during PE this week and playing the ukulele during music.  We have completed our final pieces in art where we painted a portrait and then evaluated it.

Please ensure that you use Boom Reader, Spelling Shed and TTRockStars regularly to help aid the children's learning.

Year 6:

This week we have finished our Maths Unit on calculation methods.  Next week we are starting Fractions.  In English, we have started writing our non-fiction hot tasks about animals of the world.  In RE, we thought about what Jesus would say to people who sinned in the Bible if they were having dinner together.  In Reading, we have designed our own Skyships.   In Geography, we looked at the effects of climate change on some Wonders of the World.   In Science, we classified micro-organisms.
