                                          Friday 7th November 2025

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Welcome back after the half-term break!  It’s been lovely to see everyone return refreshed and ready for the new half-term.  This term our focus is on excellent presentation, both in the children’s work and in how they come to school each day.  Please support your child by ensuring they arrive in full, smart uniform - it really helps set the tone for great learning.

All of our Advent and Christmas events are now listed on the school calendar on the website, so please do take a look and pop the dates in your diary.  A reminder too that Parents’ Evening bookings are now open for Tuesday 18th and Thursday 20th November - please make sure to book a slot to meet with your child’s teacher.  We are also trialling an option for a Teams meeting if this suits your circumstances better, you will be given the option when booking.

Next week, Year 5 will be visiting SS Peter & Paul Church in Lichfield to join pupils from four other Catholic schools for a OneLife Music retreat with Dan and Emily. We wish them a wonderful day together. Please remember that the children will be leaving school at 8:30am, so do arrive promptly on the day.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

This week the children have been learning all about the festival of Diwali and how it is celebrated.  We have listened to stories, made lights and lanterns, created rangoli patterns and sang Diwali songs.

We have also celebrated Bonfire Night, 5th November and listened to a short story about Guy Fawkes.  We have been making firework pictures, matching shapes and colours on rockets, as well as listening to all the different sounds they make.  In our Maths, we have been learning all about the number 1, how to represent 1 with our finger and that 1 object means that there is a total of 1.

Reception:

This week, we have started our new topic of Magical Adventures.  We have been learning all about magic potions and how to cast a spell.  In Maths, we have been exploring circles and triangles.  We enjoyed looking around for shapes in the environment and spoke about how many different sides there are.

Year 1:

This week we have had a wonderful time exploring instruments in our music assembly and taking part in our history workshop day.

The children enjoyed using drama and dance to act out the story of the Gunpowder Plot.  On Wednesday we had a visit from the firefighters to learn all about road safety and, as an extra treat, the children got to have a look at the fire engine.  It has been a fun week!

Year 2:

We have been working hard this week in year 2.  In English, we have started a new book - Vlad and the Great Fire of London.  We wrote our cold task, magpied some vocabulary and completed a story map.  In Maths, we have been learning how to subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number across a 10.  On Monday, we were lucky enough to have Staffordshire Sounds teach us about different musical instruments in assembly.  We even heard them play their instruments and sang along!

On Tuesday, we took part in a History workshop all about the Great Fire of London.  In RE, we have started to learn about different special celebrations.  We thought about the liturgical year, including what colour represents each period of time, as well as learning about the importance of Baptism and how it welcomes us into God's family.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been busy getting to grips with our new topic - The Stone Age!  We have looked at the different periods of the Stone Age in History and have also read our new class text 'Stone Age Boy'.  In Maths, the children have been brilliant at column addition and subtraction, and in Science we are beginning to look at how to have a healthy, balanced diet.  In RE, we have started to look at Reconciliation and have used this to make links for the children who will be making their First Holy Communion this year.

Year 3/4:

In English this week, we have been studying poetry and writing our own remembrance poetry inspired by war poetry.  In Reading, we started our new texts.  Year 3 have been reading 'Flat Stanley', while Year 4 have been exploring war poetry.  In Science, we have been identifying everyday solids, liquids and gases.  In Maths, we have been learning about column subtraction and are now moving on to multiplication, with a focus on learning our times tables.  Please continue to practise your times tables, Maths KIRF statements, Spellings and read on a daily basis.  On Friday, we visited the Staffordshire Regiment Museum and the National Memorial Arboretum.  We had a fantastic time learning about William Coltman and the sacrifices soldiers made for us during World War One and other conflicts.

Year 5:

It has been a great first week back in Year 5.  In English, we have started looking at our new fiction text 'Goodnight Mister Tom'.  In Maths, we are learning about fractions.  In Reading, we continue with Kensuke's Kingdom and we have been writing about how both characters have been feeling while living on the island.  In RE, we have finished our Baptism unit and will be starting our new unit, which is Parables & Sayings of Jesus.  In Science, we explored the difference between sieving and filtering.  In History, we are learning about The Blitz, Blackouts and Bravery.

Next Tuesday, year 5 are going on their school trip to SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Lichfield, for a special morning led by Dan and Emily.  All children need to be at school for 8:30am.

Year 6:

This week we have been adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers.  In English, we have started our new topic about 'The Windrush'.  In Reading, we are joining the crew of the Aurora as they travel towards South Polaris in 'Brightstorm'.  In RE, we interviewed Mrs Sherratt to find out about her 'calling'.  In PE, we started Yoga and Basketball.  In History, we started our new 'Re-building Britain' topic.  In Science, we learnt about Alexander Fleming.
