Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It has been wonderful to welcome so many parents into school this week for our parents evenings, I do hope you found these conversations useful.  Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support.

This morning we celebrated the Jubilee finale for schools by joining with schools from across the Archdiocese of Birmingham, along with Archbishop Bernard Longley, Bishop Timothy Menezes, and Steve Bell, Director of Education at the Birmingham Diocesan Trust, for a special online finale event.  To mark this meaningful occasion, every child planted a “bulb of hope” at the front of our school entrance, creating a beautiful symbol of growth and optimism.  We look forward with joy to seeing these bulbs bloom in the spring, reminding us of the shared faith, community, and hope that unite us.

From Monday, we will begin collecting items for Father Hudson’s Reverse Advent Calendar appeal.  You will find suggested donations listed on the poster at the bottom of this newsletter, and families are welcome to contribute as they are able.  Thank you, as always, for your kindness and generosity in supporting those in need during this Advent season.

Our Running Club will be taking part in the Junior Parkrun this Sunday at 9am in Memorial Park, Swadlincote, and we warmly welcome all pupils and their families to join us for this enjoyable community event.  Finally, please keep our Year 3 children in your prayers as they attend their Enrolment Mass on Sunday at 11am, as part of their preparation for receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion.

I wish you all a lovely weekend.

What we have been learning this week ...

Nursery:

This week the children have been listening to the story ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell.  They have role played the story, taking it in turns to be one of the baby owls.  We are so proud of how the children are beginning to join in and to see their confidence developing when recalling the story.  We have been very creative making owls with paper plates and drawing owls with circles and semi-circles. Also, in Maths, we have continued learning about the number 2, counting 2, recognising 2 in the environment and finding and matching objects of 2.  See if your child can go on a number 2 hunt in the home.

We finished the week by joining in with the live stream for the Year of Jubilee celebration!

Reception

This week reception have been reading "Space Tortoise" and have been doing some super writing about where the tortoise lives.  We have been continuing to learn our phonics sounds and are using them really well in our writing.  In Maths, we have been finding parts of numbers to 5 and the teachers are very impressed with our understanding.  In RE, we thought about prayer, including how we can pray and where.  It was lovely to hear at parents' evening about some children starting to pray at home!  Have a lovely weekend.

Year 1:

Year 1 have had a busy and exciting week of learning.  In Maths, the children have been continuing to explore subtraction, using practical resources and representations to build confidence and understanding.  In RE, we have been thinking about the importance of prayer and have been learning how and why people pray, even taking time to teach one another what we have discovered.  In English, the children have been working hard on their hot task, writing about a new monster causing chaos in the Monster Zoo, and we are encouraging them to become increasingly independent in their writing.

Year 2:

Year 2 have had another busy week.  In Maths, we have continued to practice the column method, moving onto column subtraction.  In English, we have written a 'tales of fear story' about the Great Fire of London.  In RE, we have been thinking about the Church being a community, the different roles and responsibilities within the Church and the importance of the church building being a place that we can go to pray as a community and learn about the bible.  We have also continued to practice the Nativity.  Thank you for helping your child to learn their lines at home.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had an excellent week across all of their learning.  In English, the children have finished writing their hot task - a story all about finding a magical object!  They have blown us away with their imagination and creativity in their writing!  In Maths, the children have been making links between their number bonds to 10 and number bonds to 100 and, in History, we looked at different artefacts from the Stone Age that are still around today.  In RE, we have continued to look at Reconciliation and on Friday we celebrated the Jubilee Year of Hope, where the children especially enjoyed taking part in a livestream celebration and planting bulbs on the school grounds.

Year 3/4:

This week we have been studying newspaper reports and have started writing our hot task about the beginning of World War One and the impact it had on Britain and our local community.  In Maths, we have been learning times tables and looking at patterns within multiplication and division.  Remember to keep practising times tables at home using TT Rock Stars or timestables.co.uk.  In Reading, we have been exploring how authors use features to indicate the mood of the characters.  In Science, we conducted an experiment about the changing states which involved chocolate.  In RE, Year 3/4 have been learning about Reconciliation and Year 4 have been learning about Moses.

We have sent information about our carol singing, which will happen in December.  Year 4 will be visiting the hospital and Y3/4 will be visiting a local care home.  These will happen on the 10th December (am - Y3/4 Care Home) and 11th December (pm Y4 Burton Hospital).  If you would like to volunteer to assist us with walking the children to these venues, please contact the school office or speak to Mr Read or Mr Quinn at the end of the school day.

Year 6:

This week has been assessment week and the children have been working incredibly hard to show the progress that they have made.  We have also been studying Our Lady and considering why she is such an important role model.  We have looked at King George VI's History and studied the heart, blood and blood vessels in Science.  In English, we started to write our Hot-Task about travelling on the Empire Windrush.
