Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It has been a lovely first week back after the half-term break, and the children have returned full of energy and enthusiasm.  We enter the season of Lent and the children have been thinking about their Lenten promises for the journey to Easter.  Ask your child about their promises and hopes for Lent.

We’ve had a brilliant start to our enrichment clubs for this half-term, with netball and gardening proving especially popular - thank you to all staff and pupils for making these opportunities such a success.  A reminder that our Running Club will complete their six-week block with a visit to Junior Parkrun at the Memorial Park in Swadlincote on Sunday 8th March at 9:00am - all are very welcome to join us.

Parents’ Evening appointments for Tuesday 10th and Thursday 12th March are now open for booking, with both in-person and online options available.

Finally, this Sunday’s 11:00am Parish Mass at SS Mary & Modwen’s Church will be supported by our Year 2 and Year 5 pupils; we warmly invite all families to attend.

I wish you all a lovely weekend as we head into March with hopeful signs of Spring.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week we have continued our learning of 'The Enormous Turnip'.  We have sequenced a set of pictures from the story to help us recall what happened.

In Maths, we have continued our learning of the number 5 and the children are becoming more aware that sometimes more than two numbers can make up 5.

The children have also had lots of activities in all areas to support the learning of Chinese New Year, including how and why it is celebrated, listening to stories and have particularly enjoyed watching dragon dancing.

Can I please take this opportunity to remind parents about their children bringing toys to school.  It is extremely difficult to manage when they do not want to share with their peers or if they misplace them, then they become very upset.  If they must carry something with them, then can they please leave it in the car.  Thank you for your support in this matter.

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about Chinese New Year.  We learnt about Chinese lanterns, masks, blossom trees and different types of food.  We ended the week by tasting some traditional Chinese food and it was very yummy!  In Maths, we have been exploring length and height and have used the vocabulary throughout the week.  We have compared which object is taller, shorter and longer, as well as having a go at using the stem sentences too!

Year 1:

This week, we have been using our number bonds to solve tricky addition and subtraction problems.  Understanding these "number pairs" (like 7 + 3 = 10 or 14 + 6 = 20) helps the children build a strong "number sense," making it much easier for them to calculate mentally.  As we journey through Lent, we have been thinking deeply about how we can be more like Jesus.  We discussed how Jesus was kind, patient, and helpful, and we have challenged ourselves to follow his example.  The children have been trying to perform small "acts of kindness" each day, such as helping a friend or tidying up without being asked.  In our writing this week, we have been learning how to use exclamation marks to show strong feelings like excitement, surprise, or even a loud shout.

Year 2:

We have had a busy start to Spring 2!  In Maths, we are dividing by 5 and 10 and learning the 5 times tables, exploring links with the 10 times table.  In English, we began Look Up!, studying vocabulary and the book’s structure.  In RE, we are reflecting on our Lenten journey and making promises to walk in Jesus’ footsteps.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a super first week back after half-term!  In Maths, we have started our new topic of measurement, looking at metres, centimetres and millimetres.  In English, we have started a new text all about The Tudors, linking to our new History topic, and the children are preparing to write a quest story.  In History, we have started to look at the monarchs who reigned during the Tudor period and, in Science, we have started to research Mary Anning.  In RE, we have begun to discuss Lent, how we can spend this time and why it is so important.

Year 4:

This week we have started two new books in English.  In Reading, we have started to predict and infer about the characters in 'Charlotte's Web'.  In Year 3/4, we are continuing to read and analyse Varjak Paw.  In writing, we are using a graphic novel all about Greek legend Hercules to write a narrative about his labours.  This ties in to our new History topic all about Ancient Greece.  In RE, we have started our new unit on Lent.  In Maths, we are continuing to work on fractions and times tables.  We have also started to learn the songs for our upcoming Easter Play that we are very excited about.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a great first week back.  In English, we have started our new writing unit on Beowulf and completed our cold task quest story.  In Maths, we have been ordering and comparing decimal numbers.  In Reading, we have been thinking about how we can be fluent readers and read with intonation.  In RE, we have been exploring Jesus' temptation in the desert and thinking about how he might have felt during this time.  In Science, we learnt about friction and how this can affect everyday objects.  In History, we learnt about who the Anglo Saxons and Scots were and what their settlements were like.

Year 6:

This week we have started our new Maths topic - geometry (position and direction).  In English, we have started our 'Street Child' topic about Victorian, homeless children.  In Reading, we are carrying on with 'The Girl of Ink and Stars'. In RE, we have considered the important role that CAFOD plays in helping those in poverty.  In PE we have started to play Netball.  We are continuing to practise arithmetic and strategies for answering reading questions.
