Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we continue our Lenten journey together, our children have begun their fundraising actions with great enthusiasm.  Envelopes for this year’s Good Shepherd Appeal were sent home earlier this week, and we kindly ask that all donations are returned by 23rd March.  You will also find details in this newsletter about our Food Bank collection, led in partnership with our Mini Vinnies and the St Vincent de Paul group; donations for this will be gratefully received until 20th March.  I would also like to update families regarding the parent car park.  A small number of parents have been in touch about the deteriorating surface, and I want to reassure you that we are exploring options for future upkeep - although this is a significant financial commitment.  The car park is an additional facility that many schools cannot offer, and while parents are welcome to use it, it is done so at their own risk.  If you feel it is not suitable at present, I strongly encourage walking or park-and-stride alternatives.  Thank you for your understanding while we consider how best to fund the necessary repairs.  A parent questionnaire regarding the car park will be shared after Easter.

Next week we look forward to welcoming parents into school for our two Parents' Evenings on Tuesday and Thursday and parent lunch on Wednesday for parents of pupils in 1B.  Booking is open via Parent Mail.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

What a lovely week we have had!  As well as starting our new topic, The Great Outdoors, the sun is beginning to shine, let's hope we see a little more of it!  Our new story this week is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.  We have started to read the story and, as well as talking about the days of the week, we are currently sharing our predictions on what the caterpillar might eat next.

We have begun our Lenten Journey with new prayers, talking about how we can be more like Jesus, what we are giving up or what could could try harder at.  Thank you for taking the time to share the Lenten bag at home, which will support the development of what Lent is about.

World Book Day was a success, with the children and staff wearing their hats of their favourite characters/books and taking part in a parade around the EYFS.

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about worms as part of our topic, down at the bottom of the garden.  We have read the story, 'Superworm' and wrote words and sentences describing him.  In Maths, we have been building 9 and 10.  We have used different maths resources to represent 9 and 10, as well as practising how to form the numbers.

Year 1:

This week Year 1 have enjoyed reading Tidy and have been writing rules to help Pete keep his forest neat.  We have enjoyed being bossy and using exclamation marks in our writing.  In Maths, we have been exploring numbers to 50.  We have been finding out how many tens and ones are in each number.  In RE, we continue to learn about Lent and how we can change during this special time to be more like Jesus.

Year 2:

This week we have started our new learning about Amelia Earhart.  We have really enjoyed discovering about her life and the mystery of her final flight.  In Maths, we have been exploring length and ensuring we can accurately measure in cm.  In RE, we have continued our learning about Lent with a particular focus on 'The Lost Sheep' parable.  It opened up lots of discussions about the importance of forgiveness and how God will always guide us back home.

Year 3:

This week in English, we have been studying the ancient Greek myth - Hercules.  In Reading, we have continued to read and analyse our class texts.  In Maths, we have been studying fractions and fully understanding what numerators and denominators are.  In Science, we have been learning about how our inner ear works.  In History, we have begun our ancient Greek topic.  We thoroughly enjoyed World Book Day and have been busy practising for our Easter Play.  Next Thursday, Year 3 and 4 pupils will make their first reconciliation in school and we also have parents evening on Tuesday and Thursday.

Year 4:

In year 4 this week, we have been thoroughly enjoying reading about the 12 labours of Hercules as we prepare for our hot task. In Maths, we have continued our work on fractions, learning about adding and talking away mixed numbers.  In Reading, we have started our new book 'Charlotte's Web', which we are really enjoying.  In RE, we have started our unit on Lent, learning about the parable of the pharisee and the tax collector.  In History, we have started our new topic on Ancient Greece by creating a timeline of important events.  We are also pressing ahead with rehearsals for the Easter Play, which we are very excited to show you.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a fantastic and busy week!  We loved celebrating World Book Day, where we took part in lots of exciting activities.  The children showed great creativity when designing their own book covers and thoroughly enjoyed showcasing their imaginative hats in our wonderful Book Bonnet Parade.  In Maths, we have been learning all about percentages and developing our understanding of them in a problem-solving context.  In English, we explored compound and complex sentences before beginning to write our own first-person story openings focusing on engaging the reader.  In RE, we have been learning about Lent and discussing the idea of temptations and how people try to overcome them.  In PE, we practised our basketball skills, concentrating on improving our dribbling technique.

Year 6:

This week we have been practising writing dialogue in our 'Street Child' English unit.  In Maths, we have been translating and reflecting shapes.  In RE, we have looked at the role of CAFOD and studied the parable of Lazarus and the rich man. In Geography we studied Globalisation and, in History, we started our new 'Steam, Streets and Struggles' Victorian topic.  Next week is an assessment week (the last one before SATs) so we've also been preparing in class and at booster sessions - no booster sessions next week due to Parents' Evening.

Dear Parents/Carers,

This year, from the 6th of March to the 20th March, the Mini Vinnies are raising money for charity and leading on food bank donations that will be delivered to the SVP group to feed people in need around our community.  We would appreciate it if you would bring in some tinned foods, soups, dry food, biscuits, rice and pasta so our school community can help those in need who are hungry.

Thank you for taking your time to read this and helping those in our community.

From your Mini Vinnies president, Melania
