Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we continue our journey through the season of Lent, this time of reflection, preparation and renewal offers us a meaningful opportunity to come together as a community, supporting one another and keeping Christ at the centre of all we do.  It was wonderful to welcome so many of you into school for Parents’ Evening this week.  These conversations are such a valuable opportunity to celebrate the children’s achievements and discuss their next steps, and we truly appreciate your engagement and support.  Last Sunday, my St Modwen’s Running Club represented the school brilliantly at Swadlincote Junior Parkrun - I am incredibly proud of each and every child who took part.

Looking ahead, we are very excited to welcome Class RA parents for lunch next week; please remember to book your place via ParentMail.  We also have several vacancies for roles within school closing next week, and we would be grateful if you could share these opportunities with anyone who may be interested.  Details can be found on our school website.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week we have been continuing our learning around 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'.  The children are learning to sequence the days of the week and recalling what he ate each day.  We then looked at the lifecycle of the butterfly and what happens from the egg to the butterfly.  In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 6 and have introduced the tens frame.  Don't forget to show the value of 6 in different ways on your tens frame at home.

Reception:

This week we have been learning all about frogs and their life cycle.  We learnt that they start off as frogspawn, then grow into tadpoles, then grow into froglets, before becoming an adult frog.  In Maths, we have been exploring 1 more and 1 less, as well as writing it as a number sentence.  Next week, we begin exploring ladybirds and their life cycle too!

Year 1:

It’s been another fantastic week in Year 1, and we have been so impressed by the children’s hard work!  In English, we have been writing journey stories for our Cold Task, and we have been impressed by the level of independence the children showed when getting their creative ideas onto paper.  Our mathematicians have been busy ordering numbers to 50 and, in Science, we’ve been sorting and grouping animals based on their different features.  Our History lessons have been full of thoughtful discussions about Florence Nightingale and the inspiring ways she dedicated her life to helping others.

Year 2:

In Maths, we have started learning about fractions.  The children have been exploring how to recognise equal parts and have been learning about halves.  In English, we have planned and written our Hot Task - a quest story set in space. We focused on using expanded noun phrases to add more detail and description to our writing.  In RE, we have been learning about The Lost Sheep and discussing forgiveness.  We talked about why it can sometimes be difficult to forgive others but also why forgiveness is important.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a busy week!  In English, we have planned and started to write our Hot Task.  We have created characters, problems and resolutions for our quest stories.  In Maths, we have continued to look at measurement, including perimeter.  In History, we have explored the different diseases that affected Tudor Britain and we have started our new book in our Reading lessons - 'The Fastest Boy in the World'.  We finished our week by conducting our own science experiment to find out how absorbent different types of soil were.

Year 4:

This week, in Maths, we have been learning about mixed numbers.  We will be learning about improper fractions and decimals in the weeks ahead.  In English, we created our own mythical beasts and wrote descriptions of them.  In Science, we learnt about noise level and how to measure sound.  In History, we learnt about Greek Gods and the ancient Olympics.  In RE, we have been learning about Yom Kippur.  Many of our pupils celebrated their First Reconciliation on Thursday, which was a very special occasion.  We have also been busy acting and singing as we prepare our Easter Play.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a great week.  They all had a fantastic time at the space centre and really enjoyed the trip.  In English, they are writing their hot tasks about their own quest story using techniques learnt in previous English lessons.  In Maths, we are learning about how to find the area and perimeter of shapes and applying this knowledge to problem-solving questions.  In Reading, we continue to read Cosmic and read about what might happen to Liam and Florida in China.  In RE, we are learning about the teachings of the apostles from the New Testament letters about becoming like Christ and understanding how this teaching can be applied to our own lives.  In History, we continue to learn about Anglo-Saxons and why they came to Britain.

Year 6:

This week we have been practising for our SATs in May.  It will be our last practise. We have been studying Jesus and the Samaritan woman in RE.  In History, we looked at the reign of Victoria.  In Science, we started our new topic about light.

Dear Parents/Carers,

This year, from the 6th of March to the 20th March, the Mini Vinnies are raising money for charity and leading on food bank donations that will be delivered to the SVP group to feed people in need around our community.  We would appreciate it if you would bring in some tinned foods, soups, dry food, biscuits, rice and pasta so our school community can help those in need who are hungry.

Thank you for taking your time to read this and helping those in our community.

From your Mini Vinnies president, Melania
