Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we come to the end of what has been a very successful Spring Term, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our whole school community for your continued support.  This past weekend we were blessed with a parish visitation from Archbishop Bernard Longley, who also took the opportunity to visit our beautiful school.  It was a joy to welcome him, and he spoke warmly of how delighted he was to see the continued development of St Modwen’s since his last visit for the opening of our new building, 11 years ago.  He met with myself, Mrs Taylor, and our Chair and Vice Chair of Governors, and it was a privilege to share with him the wonderful work taking place here each day.  If you visited school over the last week for the Easter play and the portrayal of Jesus' journey to the cross, I am sure that you will join me in recognising the reverence and talent displayed by our Yr3 and 4 pupils.

As we enter Holy Week next week, I ask that you continue to support your child’s journey of faith towards Easter by attending the relevant parish Masses.  Please refer to the SS Mary & Modwen’s newsletter for full details; I will also share information about Easter services via our school social media pages.  Today we break up for the Easter holidays, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back on Tuesday 14th April.  I wish you all a blessed Holy Week and a joyful Eastertide.

What we have been learning about last week .....

Nursery:

This week we have been reading 'Jasper's Beanstalk' by Nick Butterworth. The children are continuing to sequence the days of the week and recalling what Jasper did on each day.  We have also been investigating and learning about what plants need to grow and the stages in their life cycle by planting our own beans, just like Jasper!  In Maths we have been using descriptive words e.g. long, longer, longest, short, shorter, shortest, tall, taller and tallest, to describe length and height of ourselves, caterpillars and beanstalks.  Ask your children to give examples of these describing objects around the home and garden.

Reception:

This week Reception have loved learning all about ladybirds and reading the story 'The Bad Tempered Ladybird'.  In Maths, we have consolidated our learning on our number bonds to 10.  In RE, we thought about how we could be more like Jesus this Lent.  We have also thoroughly enjoyed playing outside in the sunshine!

Have a lovely weekend.

Year 1:

It’s been a busy and thoughtful week in Year 1!  In Maths, the children have become measurement experts, comparing height and length while mastering key vocabulary like ‘taller’, ‘shorter’, and ‘longest’.  Our RE lessons have focused on the Catholic value of forgiveness, where we explored why saying sorry and starting afresh is so important in our friendships.  Meanwhile, in English, we’ve been enjoying 'Brian Bear’s Picnic'.  The children have been writing wonderful letters from the perspective of different characters, capturing their thoughts and feelings.

Year 2:

In English, we have started a new non-fiction unit based on the life of Amelia Earhart.  The children have been exploring key vocabulary and developing their understanding of her life by creating text maps to help them sequence important events.  In Maths, we have been learning about quarters.  The children have been working hard to recognise, find and understand one quarter of shapes and quantities.  In RE, we have been learning about the sacrament of reconciliation. We have also continued to reflect on why forgiveness is so important, especially during the season of Lent.

Year 3:

Year 3 have been busy writing and editing their Hot Task this week and we have seen some fantastic examples of direct speech being used in their quest stories. In Maths, the children have all been fantastic at fractions - especially working out which fraction is bigger or smaller.  On Wednesday, the children took part in a livestream author workshop and we have completed week 4 of our Heart to Heart campaign, thinking about how we can include others during Lent.  The children have also all been working really hard on our Easter performance - they can't wait to perform it next week!

Year 4:

This week in Year 4 we have been working hard perfecting our Easter Play all ready for showtime. In English, we have started our Hot Task, writing about Hercules and his secret 13th labour.  In Maths, we have been focussing on fractions and decimals.  In History, we have been enjoying our topic on ancient Greece and have been learning about some Greek myths, including Medusa and the Minotaur.  In Science, we are focussing on our topic of sound and have researched Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5, the children have been working hard across all subjects.  In Maths, we have been learning about area, perimeter and line graphs, developing our skills in measuring and interpreting data.  In English, we edited our quest hot tasks and have now started our non-chronological report unit, where we focused on using correctly punctuated bullet points.  In Spanish, we learnt the names of the planets and, in PE, we enjoyed playing small basketball games to build teamwork and skills.  In RE, we continue our Lent journey, reflecting on its meaning and how we can show kindness to others.

Year 6:

This week Year 6 have been developing their understanding of angles in Maths. In English, we have started our Hot task about a Victorian Workhouse.  In Reading, we have continued with 'A girl of Ink and Stars'.  In History we looked at the impact of Victorian Schools.  In Science we looked at how light travels.  In RSHE,  we looked at body image and, n RE, we considered how God could be merciful.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

Nursery thoroughly enjoyed a lovely morning with Kate, Sandy and Connor from Little Acorns Forest School.  The children had lots of fun choosing between decorating wooden plaques with the food the hungry caterpillar ate, then manually drilling holes in wood, planting beans, a picture hunt, making beanstalks with pasta and cheerios, making caterpillars, making butterflies and just having a great time with their friends!  We all sat down together for a picnic and talked about our favourite part of the morning.

In RSE, the children have been learning about the internet, how we use it and how it helps us to do lots of great things.  We also looked at examples of what we can do without the internet, such as playing outside, going swimming, playing a board game etc.

Also, this week we have been learning all about Holy Week.  We shared the bible story of Palm Sunday leading up to Good Friday.  The children are beginning to understand that we make the sign of the cross at the beginning and end of prayers to remind us that Jesus died on the cross.  We will continue with the Easter story after half-term.  Wishing you a happy and holy Easter.

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about sunflowers and plants.  We learnt that plants start off as seeds and there are essential things that plants need in order to grow.  We even planted some sunflower seeds, and we're going to watch them grow very tall!  In Maths, we have been exploring 3D shapes and looking at their properties.  We have worked very hard this half-term!

Year 1:

This week, we have been working very hard. In English, we completed our Hot Task, where we retold the story of Brian Bear’s Picnic, making sure to include a clear beginning, middle, and end.  In Maths, we have been learning about length and height. We compared different objects and practised measuring carefully using a ruler. In RE, we have learnt about Holy week and explored the stations of the cross. Hope you all have a lovely Easter break

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a fantastic last week of term.  They have been working hard on learning more about fractions in Maths and, in Reading, we have continued exploring our book 'The Fastest Boy in the World'.  We have finished off our learning about the Tudors by comparing life in the Tudor period to life today.  The children all put on three fantastic performances of the Easter play - we are all so proud of them.  Have a lovely Easter break!

Year 4:

In Reading, we have focused on our tone, pitch and speed of our voice and used clues in the text to help us.  In RE, we have been looking at the stations of the cross and looking at the story of the betrayal of Jesus.  We also had the opportunity to play short tennis, which we really enjoyed.  In Science, we had a go at making parachutes to see whether a larger surface area affects air resistance.

We hope you all have a great Easter.
