Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Welcome back to a new term and Happy Easter to you all.  It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back to school this week after the Easter holidays, refreshed and ready to learn.  As a Catholic community, we now begin the joyful season of Eastertide, which we will celebrate throughout the coming weeks up to Pentecost, reminding us of the hope, light and new life that the Resurrection brings.  I am delighted to see that the ‘Bulbs of Hope’ planted by the children into the frozen ground last November have bloomed beautifully this spring, standing as a lasting legacy of hope that will return year after year, reminding us of God’s faithfulness and the promise of Jesus alive in our lives.

As part of our busy week ahead, we look forward to welcoming Nursery parents into school for Parent Lunch on Wednesday (booking via ParentMail), and on Friday our children will take part in the London Mini Marathon at school, completing a 2-mile run with the chance to receive a running bib, activity pack, certificate - and even to help us win a visit from Joe Wicks.  Please sign your child up for this challenge if they wish to take part.

This Sunday marks the Third Sunday of Easter, where we continue to reflect on the Resurrection of Jesus and his presence in our lives today.  I warmly encourage families, where possible, to attend Mass together, strengthening the link between home, school and parish at this special time.

Wishing you a peaceful weekend,

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

Welcome back, I hope you've all had a lovely Easter break.  We have started the week by revisiting the Holy Week and then celebrated with the story of Easter. The children have been engaged with lots of Easter activities to celebrate Easter. In Maths, we have been talking about positional language e.g. on, under, in front, behind, next to, beside,  inside and outside.  This was reinforced when listening to the story 'We're going on an Egg Hunt' using positional language to describe where the eggs are hiding.

Reception:

This week, we have been learning all about Spring.  We explored the different signs of Spring and even tried to look out for these during the week. Throughout school, we have been celebrating Easter and talking about new life, as well as Jesus' resurrection.  It was interesting to find out about Jesus rising and not being in the tomb anymore.  We continue our learning on Easter for the next few weeks.  In Maths, we have been consolidating number bonds, as well as finding 1 more and 1 less.  We have been working very hard on this!  Next week, we begin our new topic of 'On the Farm.'

Year 1:

Year 1 children have been enthusiastically exploring the story Jehvon Goes to Jamaica, developing their understanding through  activities focused on key vocabulary and storytelling skills. The class has been learning to identify and discuss important words from the story, helping to deepen comprehension and build confidence in their language use. Using a story map, the children have also begun retelling the narrative in their own words, carefully sequencing events and recalling key details.

In Maths, the children have been learning about volume and capacity. Through hands-on activities, they have been comparing and measuring different amounts using a variety of containers, as well as exploring language such as full, empty, half full, and nearly full.

Year 2:

Year 2 have made a fantastic start to the summer term following the Easter break.  We began by finishing our learning on Holy Week, focusing on the Stations of the Cross and reflecting on what we can learn from the example Jesus set.  In English, we have started an exciting new book, Somebody Swallowed Stanley, which is inspiring our writing about environmental issues, particularly the importance of not polluting our oceans.  In Maths, we have completed our topic on fractions, where we explored the difference between one quarter and three quarters, and we are now confident in recognising and comparing them.  In Geography, we have begun a new topic on beaches and coastlines, starting by learning what a coastline is and why these areas are important.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a busy first week back after Easter!  They have enjoyed starting our new text in English and have continued to look at fractions in Maths.  In Art, the children have written fact files all about Pablo Picasso and have recapped how to say hello and introduce themselves in Spanish.  In RE, the children have been thinking about what we learn during Mass and have continued this in RSE lessons by thinking about how they can help others.  We have also started our new topics of 'Canals' and 'Light' in Geography and Science.

Year 3/4:

This week, in English, we have been learning about figurative language and then used it to describe Venice.  In Reading, Year 4 have been studying Charlotte's Web.  Year 3/4 have begun their new book, Desirable.   In Maths, Year 4 have been studying decimals and fractions.  Year 3/4 have been learning about mass and capacity.  Please remember to keep practising times tables at home as the Times Tables Check is fast approaching.  In Geography, we have been learning about volcanoes and how they are formed.  In Art, we have been studying the Mona Lisa.

Year 4:

This week we have welcomed the children back after a well-deserved Easter break.  In Maths, we have continued our work on decimals and fractions.  In Reading, we are finishing off Charlotte's Web and, in English, we have started our new book 'The Thief Lord', set in Venice.  We will be writing an adventure story set here for our Hot Task.  In Geography, we have started our new topic on Volcanos and Italy.  In RE, we are looking at the different gospel accounts of the Resurrection and comparing them.  In Science, we have started our new topic on the digestion system.

Year 5:

We have had a fantastic first week back.  In English, we have started our new unit on Ice Trap and are learning about the journey story structure.  In Maths, we have learnt about types of angles and practised using a protractor to measure angles. In Reading, we started reading the Nowhere Emporium and thought about what impression we have on the main character.  In RE, we learnt about the betrayal of Jesus and the Passover meal.  In History, we have learnt about how the Anglo-Saxons influenced England today.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6 we have started our new unit in writing: Disaster Journey.  We have started to read, 'The Explorer' for inspiration.  In Maths, we have been practising arithmetic and drawing shapes accurately.  In Reading, we have practised explaining what impressions we have about characters, settings and relationships.  In PE this term we are doing cricket and tennis.  In RE, we have looked at the denial of Jesus by Peter, and the words that Jesus spoke during his crucifixion.
