Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

This week has ended on a real high as today we proudly took part in the TCS Mini London Marathon for schools.  Over 150 children rose to the challenge, and I am delighted to say that every single one completed the course – a wonderful achievement that showed determination, resilience and true school spirit.  I was also incredibly impressed with the pupils who didn’t run; they became the most amazing spectators and supporters, lining the route with enthusiastic cheers and shouts of encouragement.  They reminded us all that support and teamwork are a very important part of any marathon.  I would also like to extend my sincere thanks to all the nursery parents and carers who joined us for our parent lunch on Wednesday.  It was lovely to welcome you into school,

Looking ahead to next week, we will once again be celebrating our Parade for Mary, May Queen.  On Friday 1st May, we will process with Mary around the school grounds before ending the parade in the prayer garden, where pupils will offer small plants and flowers in devotion.  If you wish to donate flowers or a small plant, these will be very gratefully received on the day.  Our Reception classes are off to Packington Farm next week, so we wish them all the best and I can't wait to hear all about their super visit.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend in the sunshine!

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week in nursery we have been learning about Bears.  We have looked at different types of bears, where they live and what they like to eat.  Our story is 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt’ by Michael Rosen, where the family in the story go in search for a bear. As we have only read part of the story, the children are very excited to find out what happens next week!

In this week's maths activities, the children have been comparing quantities. They are developing their understanding of when a group has ‘more than’ or 'less than' another group.

Reception:

This week, Reception have been learning about the farm.  We looked at different farm animals and what they look like.  In English, we used our Phonics skills to write captions and sentences about the farm.  In Maths, we have been counting beyond 10 and how to build those numbers.  It has been tricky but we did well! Next week, we go to Packington Farm to see Farmer Jules.  We are very excited!

Year 1:

This week we have tried hard to learn our 2, 10 and 5 timetables in Maths.  Please keep practising this at home!  In English, we have loved carrying on with our story 'Jehvon goes to Jamaica'.  We have used some of the pictures in the book to write expanded noun phrases and sentences using adjectives.  In RE, we have learnt about the Easter Candle, we have explored the features of the candle and why it is significant.

Year 2:

In Maths this week, we have been learning all about time.  The children have focused on reading the clock using o’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. They have also begun to develop their understanding of minutes past, showing great progress in telling the time more precisely.  In English, we have been preparing for our upcoming Hot Task by creating our own imaginative settings. The children have been practising using expanded noun phrases to add detail and description to their writing, making their ideas more engaging for the reader. We have also been working hard to improve our comprehension skills, with a particular focus on retrieval and developing a richer vocabulary.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a fantastic week.  We have been busy planning characters and plots ready to write our 'Tale of Fear' story next week, based on 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff'.  In Maths, the children have been working hard to measure mass and capacity and have been looking at reading scales.  In Geography, we learnt all about how a canal lock works and, in Science, we continued to look at sources of light – in particular the sun and how we can protect ourselves from it.  Our week ended with lots of children completing the Mini London Marathon in school – they all tried really hard and persevered to finish!  Well done!

Year 3/4:

This week in English, we have been learning about direct speech and creating our own characters for our hot task.  In Reading, Year 4 enjoyed finishing and evaluating Charlotte’s Web.  Year 3/4 are continuing to read 'Desirable', which we have found very funny and enjoyable.  In Maths, Year 4 have been learning how to calculate with money.  Mr Quinn’s class have been learning about capacity and volume.  Next week, we will be learning how to add and subtract fractions.  In Geography, we learnt about the different types of volcano and, in Science, we studied why different animals have different types of teeth.  Many of us enjoyed taking part in the Mini London Marathon on Friday.  We had beautiful weather for it.  Mr Quinn was very proud of all the pupils who took part in our First Holy Communion meeting after school on Tuesday.  FHC ties are available to purchase on Parentmail.  They were added a while ago, so you may need to scroll right to the bottom of the Shop page to find them.  Please remember to keep practising tables as the MTC will be coming up later this term.

Year 4:

This week in year 4 we have started our new Maths topic all about money and using our decimal knowledge to write different amounts.  We have also stepped up the practise of the times tables check ready for June.  In English, we are still researching Venice and have been doing lots of work on direct speech, ready for our Italian adventure story.  In RE, we have been researching the different accounts of the resurrection.  In Reading, we have finally reached the very sad ending of 'Charlotte's Web'.  In Geography, we have been looking at the different types of volcano.  In PE, we have been enjoying football and athletics.  Finally, in Science, we have started our new topic on the digestive system.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5 has been full of engaging learning across all subjects.  In RE, we explored the Easter Triduum and discussed thoughtful reasons why Pontius Pilate allowed Jesus to be crucified.  In English, we built vocabulary using a thesaurus to prepare for our hot task and wrote diary entries as Shackleton, using figurative language to express emotions.  In Maths, we investigated polygons and angles, developing our understanding of their properties.  In Science, we explored mass, weight, gravity and air resistance through investigations and, in Art, we enjoyed experimenting with creative printing techniques, including potato and fingerprinting.
