What we have been learning about this week .....
Nursery:
This week the children have been reading 'Whatever Next!' by Jill Murphy, where Baby Bear goes to the moon. This has led to a discussion about space and what we might see on our journey. We are continuing with segmenting and blending CVC words in our phonics lessons.
In Maths, we have been learning all about 3D shapes and their properties using the language 'curved', 'flat' and 'faces'. Let the children have a 3D shape hunt around the house to see if they can find cubes, cuboids, cylinders and spheres and see if they can describe their properties to you.
Reception:
This week we have been learning about Free Range eggs. The children have enjoyed exploring why free-range eggs are better and thought carefully about the hens that are kept contained. In Maths, we have been consolidating our learning on take away and have tried really hard to use the number stories to subtract. Next week, we continue learning about the farm and delve deeper into the story of 'The Little Red Hen'.
Year 1:
This week, we have been very excited to begin reading our new book, 'The Giant Jam Sandwich'. We have enjoyed learning lots of new vocabulary from the story and using story maps to help us retell the events in the correct order. The children have shown fantastic imagination when discussing the characters and predicting what might happen next.
In Maths, we have been learning all about halves. We have explored how to find half of shapes by making sure the two parts are equal, and we have also practised finding half of different amounts using objects and pictures. The children worked hard to explain their thinking and solve practical problems.
In Science, we have been learning to identify different types of plants and discussing where they grow. The children enjoyed spotting similarities and differences between wild plants and plants that are grown in gardens.
Year 3:
This week, we have been exploring newspaper reports in English. We have looked at the features and started to pick them out of example texts. In Maths, we have started to look at measuring capacity and volume. We are continuing our journey of preparing for First Holy Communion, which will take place very soon. We have continued reading 'The Fastest Boy in the World' in our reading lessons, and we have really enjoyed reading about Soloman's journey and exploring how he has felt at different points of the book so far.
Next week, we will be continuing our work on newspaper reports and, in Maths, we will begin to compare and calculate capacity and volume.
Year 3/4:
This week in English, we have been busy finishing our Hot Task about a pair of children who escape to Venice for a sight-seeing adventure without their parents. In Maths, Year 4 have been learning to tell the time in 24-hour format. Year 3/4 have been learning how to find fractions of an amount and will be learning about time next week. Please keep practising your times tables in preparation for our times tables check next month. In Reading, Y3/4 have started their new book called, 'The Beast and the Bethany'. Mr Read's class have been enjoying their new book. In Geography, we learnt about the Pacific Ring of Fire and, in Computing, we have been coding using Scratch.
Year 4:
This week we have been really getting our teeth into our new book in reading, 'The Girl who Stole the Elephant'. We have been gripped by this and every chapter is leaving us on a cliffhanger. In English, we are currently writing our hot task narratives of two children lost in Venice. In Maths, we have started our new topic on time. In RE, we have been looking at religious artwork depicting the resurrection and have created our own triptych about this. In PE, we have been improving our football and athletics skills and, in Science, we have been learning about the different functions of our teeth.
Year 5:
In English, we have explored some poetry about Antarctica and started our new non-fiction unit by writing a biography. In Maths, we have started learning how to add and subtract decimals. In Reading, we continued reading the 'Nowhere Emporium' and worked on our intonation and fluency. In RE, we have been learning about the Resurrection of Jesus and how this impacted the lives of the disciples. In Geography, we learnt about the positives and negatives of tourism. We also took part in a live science lesson to celebrate David Attenborough's 100th birthday.
Year 6:
Year 6 have been working hard this week preparing for their SATs. We have been practising Arithmetic, Spelling, Reading, Grammar. The children have been amazing - their attitude and approach to doing their best is more than we could have asked for and we are all very proud of them. Next week, we would like the children to come in at 8am for their free breakfast - it is always a great way to start each day of SATs week.
