Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

Welcome back to the final half term of the academic year following the Whitsun break. It is always a particularly busy and exciting part of the school year, with much to look forward to in the weeks ahead, including class trips, sports days, end-of-year reports and our transition day. Please do keep a close eye on the school calendar for all of these important dates. We are also looking forward to celebrating St Modwen’s Feast Day on Friday 3rd July with our annual outdoor Mass, followed by our much-loved St Modwen’s Got Talent event in the afternoon. Parents are warmly invited to join us for either of these joyful celebrations. Booking details will be shared next week.

Our Year 6 pupils with be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 28th June when we once again welcome Bishop Timothy to our parish. Please hold our Year 6 pupils in your prayers as they prepare for this milestone in their faith journey.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

This week the nursery have started their new topic ‘Set Sail to Africa’. We have shared our own life experiences of the countries we have visited and have looked for them on maps and globes before looking at Africa.

Our story is 'Handa's Surprise' so we have been learning about African animals and have made an african sunset with animal silhouettes in art.

In maths the children have been introduced to balance scales and they have been making comparisons between objects relating to their weight. The children have also revisited the language of size, length and capacity when looking at different objects in the nursery.

Reception:

This week, we have started our new topic, Set Sail to Australia and it has been very interesting so far. We have looked at different maps and how to find Australia on the map. In Maths, we have started exploring sharing and grouping. We even used stem sentences to develop our oracy through language.

Year 2:

In Maths, we have been learning about mass, comparing the mass of different objects. The children have also been completing maths assessments and have worked incredibly hard to show what they have learned throughout the year. In RE, we have been learning about Pentecost and the importance of the Holy Spirit in guiding the disciples. We discussed how the disciples were strengthened and inspired to share Jesus' message after receiving the Holy Spirit. On Tuesday, we enjoyed a fantastic trip to the Black Country Museum. The children had a wonderful time exploring the historical buildings, taking part in a school lesson and learning about life in the past. We were super impressed with how engaged, enthusiastic and well-behaved all of the children were throughout the day. They were excellent ambassadors for our school and should be very proud of themselves.

Year 3/4:

What a wonderful week we've had in Year 3! On Thursday, we had a party to celebrate those children that did their First Holy Communion in May. It was wonderful to gather together as Year 3 and 3 / 4 to celebrate this special occasion together. In history, we have started our new topic of 'Walk like an Egyptian', the children were very excited to start this topic and enjoyed learning about who the Ancient Egyptians were. In English, we have started to look at our new book of 'Marcy and the Riddle of the Sphinx'. In maths, we have been learning about money. You could help your child by practising counting pounds and pence at home

This week, we started our new English unit based around persuasive writing. We have been exploring the positives and negatives of having a class pet and held a debate to improve our oracy skills. In Maths, Mr Read's class have been working hard on learning how to read coordinates and translate shapes. Mr Quinn's class have been learning about decimals. In addition, we have been doing our MTC check. Please keep practicing at home as we will be continuing with this next week. In Reading, we have enjoyed choral reading and character analysis. Next week is assessment week. In PE, we have started units on cricket and tennis. In RE, we have learned about Moses in Year 3/4. We have also been learning about Stewardship which is our new Caritas in Action Theme. In History, we created a timeline of major events in Roman Britain.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4, we have been very busy with our times tables as we are now in the window for the official multiplication check. In maths, we have also been working on 2D shapes and co-ordinates. In English, we are busy creating a persuasive letter to Mrs Sherratt asking if we can have a class fish. In RE, we have started our new topic about special roles within the Catholic church. In PE, we have started cricket and tennis. In science, we have started our new topic all about habitats.

Year 5:

Welcome back to the final half term of Year 5! This week in RE, we have been learning about Pentecost and created our own symbols to represent the Holy Trinity. In Maths, we have been exploring negative numbers and developing our understanding of how they are used in different contexts. In English, we looked at a WAGOLL (What A Good One Looks Like) and created story maps to help us plan a narrative about finding a magical object. In Art, we began an artist study of Jacques Lipchitz as part of our sculpture topic, exploring his unique style and techniques. In Science, we investigated mammal gestation periods and compared this to their lifespan investigation anomilies. Next week is assessment week so good attendance is especially important to ensure all children have the opportunity to demonstrate their learning. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Year 6:

This week we have started to practise our end of year play. We have also been preparing for our hot task in English - writing persuasively. In Maths, we have been problem solving using real-life situations. In Geography we have looked at the differences between the River Amazon and the River Trent. In RE, we have looked at the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. In History, we have studied a Mayan timeline and in PE, we practised 'pacing' our runs.
