Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

We have had a very busy and successful week across school, with a number of important assessments taking place. Our Year 1 children completed their Phonics Screening Check, Year 4 took part in the Multiplication Tables Check, and children in Key Stage 1 undertook the optional SATs assessments. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our parents and carers for the support you have given your children in preparing for these assessments. Your encouragement and commitment make a real difference. We would also like to recognise the hard work of our staff, who have spent considerable time preparing the children and ensuring that each assessment was delivered with care, compassion and reassurance.

Earlier this week, Miss Cartwright delivered her first OPAL assembly, sharing important reminders about lunchtime expectations and how we can all be safe, respectful and ready to learn outdoors, just as we are in the classroom. The children responded brilliantly and enjoyed learning more about making the most of their playtimes.

Although it has been a particularly wet week, this certainly did not deter our Year 5 pupils on their visit to Dovedale. They demonstrated tremendous resilience, determination and enthusiasm as they tackled the walk to the top and back down again. The stepping stones were a particular highlight and created some wonderful memories for the children.

Year 1 also enjoyed a fantastic visit to the Museum of Childhood in Sudbury, where they explored vintage toys and experienced what a Victorian classroom would have been like. The children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on historical activities and gained a real insight into childhood in the past.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the parent volunteers who supported these trips. We greatly appreciate you giving up your time to help make these valuable learning experiences possible for our children.

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, reminding us of Christ’s boundless love, compassion and mercy. As we reflect on this special feast day, we leave you with these words from Scripture:

“Come to me, all you who labour and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable weekend.

Mrs Taylor

Deputy Head Teacher

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

As we continue our topic of Africa the children have explored African mud painting, creating patterns and painting animals. We have listened to different types of music from around the continent and looked at some of the different instruments.

In maths we have been looking at what number comes after different numerals to 10. We have used a number line, made a human number line and rolled a dice to support the learning of this.

Reception:

This week, Reception have been writing postcards from Australia. We hopped onto the plane and flew to Australia. We’ve had an amazing time there and wanted to tell everyone about the animals we saw. In Maths, we have been looking at position and direction and have used stem sentences and vocabulary very clearly throughout. We’ve also been busy creating different collages of kangaroos. It’s been a lot of fun!

Year 2:

In year 2 this week, we have been working hard on our assessments again, particularly in reading and we are incredibly proud of how well the children have approached them. They have shown great determination, resilience and a positive attitude throughout, always trying their best. In RE, we have been learning about Mass and why it is important for us to come together as the family of Christ. We have also been exploring the different parts of the beginning of Mass, thinking carefully about what we do and say and discussing the meaning and significance behind these actions.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a great week showing off everything that they have learned. The children have completed assessments in Maths, Reading and Spelling and Grammar and have worked so hard - we are very proud of them! In History, we continued to learn about the Egyptians, looking closely at how the river Nile was used and why it was so important. In Science we have started our new topic of Plants and in RE have looked at the importance of Prayer and how it can help us.

Year 4:

This week in Year 4 we have been busy writing a letter to Mrs Sherratt trying to persuade her that we would like a class fish for the rest of the year. In maths, we have been looking at co-ordinates, translations and reflections. On top of that we have been completing our times tables check. In RE, we have been investigating the lives of monks and nuns. In science, we are looking at the affects of deforestation on habitats.

Year 5:

This week, we have been working extremely hard by completing our end of year assessments. The children should be very proud of all the work they have put in. We visited Dovedale and climbed all the way to the top of Thorpe Cloud for our mountains and maps topic. Everyone showed great resilience and determination despite the weather. In RE, we have started learning about the miracles that Jesus performed. In History, we have started our Voyage with the Vikings topic.

Year 6:

This week we have been continuing with our production practise and learning our songs and words. In English we have been writing a narrative piece of work based on finding a fossil. In History we looked at how the Mayan Civilisation grew. In Geography, we looked at how we can save the rainforests.
