19/06/2026 School Newsletter

                                                     Friday 19th June 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

It’s been a great week in school with plenty to look back on. Our Year 5 pupils represented the school well at the Staffordshire Schools' end of year music event – thank you to them for their efforts. Year 6 have also had a memorable visit to St Mary’s College, Oscott, where they met seminarians in training for the priesthood; this is a rare opportunity offered to only a small number of schools each year.

Looking ahead, Sports Days take place next week, so please do check the school calendar – and parents are reminded to wear trainers if they’re planning to take part in the races… we know from experience that this can get surprisingly competitive! Auditions for this year’s St Modwen’s Got Talent will also be held on Friday.

Wishing you all a lovely weekend in the sunshine.

May include: A black and white illustration of a dove in flight, holding an olive branch. The dove's wings are spread, and its tail feathers are fanned out. The image is a clean, minimalist design on a white background.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Angela Swinson. Angela was a much-loved parent within our school community and a dedicated member of the St Modwen’s PTA for more than 20 years, serving as a founder member and treasurer. She gave countless hours in support of the school, often working quietly behind the scenes to organise finances, manage lottery licences and ensure events and fundraising activities ran smoothly. Her commitment, generosity and care have touched the lives of so many children and families over the years.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Rob, their three children, and all of Angela’s family and friends at this very difficult time. Angela will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

As a small token of our appreciation, we would like to make a donation in Angela’s memory to Cancer Research UK. If any members of our school community would like to contribute, please bring donations into the school office, and these will be presented on behalf of our St Modwen’s family.  You may also wish to visit the school office to write any personal messages of thanks to Angela.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

As we continue our learning of the continent of Africa the children have been listening to the story  'We're Going on a Lion Hunt'. We have looked at and discussed the similarities and differences to 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' and joined in with the repeated phrases. In maths we have been looking at what comes before different numerals to 10. You could practise this at home, looking at numbers to see if the children can say the number that comes before it.

We will continue with the story next week and we will be being creative with animal patterns.

Reception:

This week, we have continued learning about Australia and thought carefully about the ocean. We had a group discussion about the animals in the ocean and why they needed protecting. In Maths, we have been consolidating position and direction and have also been working on our number bonds to 10. Next week, we continue our learning on Australia and will look at the Great Barrier Reef in more detail.

Year 1:

This week in Year 1 the children have been working hard in their maths lessons, solving addition and subtraction problems with increasing confidence. They have enjoyed using practical equipment and pictorial methods to help them understand how numbers work. Next week, we will begin learning how to tell the time, focusing on o’clock and half past. In English, we have been exploring the story Jack and the Beanstalk. The children have been writing their own sentences about the story and are focusing on using correct punctuation, including capital letters and full stops. In RE, we have been learning about Jesus and his disciples. The children have explored who the disciples were and have been thinking carefully about how they might have felt when following Jesus and witnessing his teachings.

Year 2:

This week, we have continued to learn about Mass in Maths. We have been weighing in grams and kilograms and have been using the 4 operations to solve problems. In English, we have started our unit on a portal story. In RE, we have been discussing how Jesus is with us in Mass. Next week, we will be creating a character for our story in English with a focus on using expanded noun phrases. In Maths, we will be measuring in ml.

Year 3:

Year 3 have had a brilliant week! In English, the children have planned and started to write their own story for their Hot Task and have all had some excellent ideas! In Maths, we have continued to look at telling the time to the nearest 5 minutes and 1 minute as well as looking at how many days and months there are in the year. In RE we have looked at the important signs and gestures we make around the church and as we pray and in History the children learned all about Pharaohs. We finished the week by practising for Sports Day out in the sunshine!

Next week, we will be carrying on writing our Hot Task story and editing it to make improvements in English and in Maths we will continue to look at time and how to solve problems using it.

Year 3/4 and Year 4

This week, we have been completing our assessments. Mr Quinn and Mr Read have been impressed with all the hard work and focus that has been put in.  In Maths, we have been learning about coordinates and translation. Mr Quinn's class have started the next unit which is money. In RE, Y3 /4 have been learning about Moses and the 10 plagues. Mr Read's class has been learning about vocations and the lives of priests, monks and nuns. In History, we have learnt about how the Roman Empire affected different people in different ways. In Science, we learnt about the impact humans have on the habitats of animals and plants.  Next week, we will take part in sports day! Your child will be told what colour they need to wear.

Year 5:

This week we have been building an exciting atmosphere in our writing, imagining the discovery of a magical object hidden deep inside a cave and using descriptive language to bring the scene to life. In Maths, we have been learning how to convert kilograms to grams and metres to kilometres, strengthening our understanding of measurement. In RE, we discussed the impact of Jesus’ miracles and reflected on their significance. We also visited Stafford Showground where we performed on the ukuleles to a live audience showcasing our hard work and musical skills.

Next week we will be writing our magical object hot tasks in English and in Maths we will convert metric and imperial units.
