                                                     Friday 26th June 2026

Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we come to the end of another busy week at St Modwen’s, I would like to begin by thanking you for your continued support, particularly as we navigated the recent period of extremely warm weather. Please ensure that your child comes to school each day with a sun hat and sun cream, as these are essential in helping us keep everyone safe and comfortable during the summer term.

This week, our Year 6 pupils were honoured to be visited by Bishop Timothy Menezes, who spoke with them about their upcoming sacrament of Confirmation. The children engaged thoughtfully, asking insightful questions and demonstrating their growing discernment. Confirmation will take place this Sunday at 11am at SS Mary and Modwen’s Church. Thank you to all parents and carers for your support in helping your child prepare for this important step in their faith journey.

We are also looking forward to the Junior Parkrun this Sunday at 9am at Swadlincote Maurice Lea Memorial Park. All pupils are warmly invited to join Mrs Sherratt and her running club for this event.

Next week, we look ahead to our Transition Morning, when children will spend time with their new teacher in preparation for the next academic year. Further details will be shared with you at the start of the week. We will also be celebrating St Modwen’s Feast Day next Friday (3rd July), beginning with our annual outdoor Mass followed by our ever-popular ‘St Modwen’s Got Talent’ in the afternoon.

We look forward to welcoming you to our upcoming events and celebrations.

Wishing you a lovely weekend.

Mrs Taylor

Deputy Head Teacher

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

We are continuing with our story, 'We're Going on a Lion Hunt' by sequencing the story and drawing our own story maps to reinforce this. In phonics the children continue to work really hard with  listening to and saying the sounds to support the blending of CVC words.

In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of number sequences by finding missing numbers and revisiting how to identify the numbers that come before and after within 10.

Next week we will be reading, 'Walking through the Jungle' and revisiting ABAB patterns.

Reception:

This week, Reception have continued their learning about Australia. As a class, we looked deeper into the rainforest and discussed the type of animals you would find here. We also wrote some sentences describing the rainforest and its surroundings. Reception have worked hard this week and despite the hot weather, they have been resilient and kind to one another. Next week, we consolidate our Maths learning on addition and subtraction, as well as thinking about the climate in the rainforests.

Year 2:

This week in English, we have continued to internalise our new text, Queen Victoria's Bathing Machine. The children have also begun creating their own characters and settings, using descriptive language and their imagination. In Maths, we have started learning about capacity and volume through practical activities and discussions. In RE, we have continued our learning about the Mass and its importance.

Next week, in English, we will be learning about commas in a list and conjunctions to improve our writing. In Maths, we will continue exploring capacity and volume.

Year 3:

This week, we have been finishing off our hot tasks in English. The children have written some fantastic rags to riches stories. In maths, we have been thinking about minutes, seconds and hours. We have been converting between them and thinking about the most appropriate unit of measurement for different activities. The children have really enjoyed learning about the mummification process in history. On Wednesday, we attended a virtual author workshop with Eric Huang, it was very interesting to learn about his inspiration behind his books.

Next week, we will be moving on to learn about shape in maths and will be thinking about the present and past tense in English.

Year 3/4 and Year 4

This week in Year 3/ 4 and Year 4, Mr Quinn and Mr Read have been very impressed with the maturity and resilience of all pupils as they coped with the heat. In English, we wrote our cold task which is a portal story based on time travelling back to Roman times. Year 3/4   have been learning about money and converting  between pounds a pence. This topic will continue next week. To support at home, if you are in a shop, ask your child to add up the cost of the shopping or work out the amount of change due if you paid in cash. Mr Read's class have been learning about regular and irregular polygons. In Reading, both classes have been analysing how authors use language to show emotions and feelings without stating them. In RE, Mr Quinn's class have learnt about the anointing of King David while Mr Read's class have started their new unit. In Science, we learnt more about how humans can positively or negatively impact biodiversity.

Year 5:

Year 5 have had a wonderfully productive week, even with the extremely hot weather. In English, the children have begun drafting their exciting hot task, writing all about their adventure to find a magical object. In maths, they have confidently completed their unit on converting units and are now ready to move on to exploring volume. During reading, the class have been diving deeper into The Nowhere Emporium, focusing on exploring the characters’ feelings and motivations. In RE, the children learnt about the Seven Sacraments and discussed how each one is an action of Jesus Christ in the world today. Year 5 should feel incredibly proud of their hard work, resilience and enthusiasm throughout the week. Next week, in English, we move on to our non-fiction text and in maths, we begin our new unit on volume.

Year 6:

This week in Year 6 we have been practising our play. We have also been finishing our Arcimboldo inspired art work. We have started our DT project and in RE, we learned how prayer is an important part of Islam and where the Apostle Paul travelled to spread God's message.
