Dear Parents and Carers

Welcome to this week’s newsletter!

As we head into the final week of the academic year, there is so much to celebrate from the last few days. After a number of weather-related changes, it was wonderful to finally hold our Sports Days this week. The children showed great determination, teamwork and encouragement towards one another, and it was lovely to see so many families able to join us.

We were also treated to an outstanding Year 6 production the week, which perfectly showcased the many talents, personalities and confidence of our oldest pupils. Every child played their part brilliantly and should be incredibly proud of themselves. A huge thank you must go to Miss Goodman and Mr Mawhinney for the time, energy and dedication they put into creating such a memorable show. Our Year 6 children didn't stop there, and were straight off to Whitemore Lakes, enjoying glorious blue skies and warm weather while throwing themselves into every activity on offer. From sailing and raft building to the very welcome opportunity to jump into the lake afterwards, they have embraced every challenge with enthusiasm and a smile.

As we prepare for our final week together, I encourage parents to keep an eye on the school calendar for any remaining events and important dates. I am particularly looking forward to welcoming our Year 6 families into school for the various celebrations taking place next week. For some, it will be the end of a family's journey with St Modwen's, and while these occasions will be filled with pride and happy memories, they will also come with a heavy heart as we say goodbye not only to our Year 6 pupils but also to parents and families who have been a valued part of our school community for many years. Let's make these final days of the year ones to remember.

On Sunday, we celebrate a very special occasion for Father Stan as he celebrates 25 years as an ordained priest! I look forward to seeing many of our families  in church on Sunday at 11am when Father Stan is joined by our dear friend of the school, Bishop Timothy. On behalf of the whole school community, I congratulate and thank Father Stan for his service, dedication and ministry.

What we have been learning about this week .....

Nursery:

In Nursery this week the children have continued with their learning around the story 'Walking through the Jungle' and making a story map. In maths we have revisited our learning about MORE and FEWER. Children are increasingly confident in using this language within their play. Try practising this at home with objects from around the house to see how good the children are!

Reception:

This week, we have been thinking about the seaside and decided to use adjectives to describe all of the wonderful things we can see. We have impressed lots of people with our writing, especially with the use of our phonics skills. We have been consolidating in Maths and have worked on our number bonds to 10, ready for Year 1. Throughout the week, we have enjoyed playing with our friends and making memories of Reception. Next week is our final week and together, we will be doing lots of fun activities.

Year 1:

This week in maths we have looked at time with a focus on half past the hour. We have learnt our days of the week song and our months of the year. In writing we have been using our imagination skills to plan our own stories. In RE, we have looked at the importance of the water when thinking about baptism. In science we have been exploring where our food comes from! At home you can practice spelling the days of the week and the moths of the year!

Year 3:

What an exciting week we have had in Year 3! On Monday afternoon, we had Sports Day. It was so much fun and we loved watching our adults take part in the parent race. On Tuesday, we went on our school trip to the canal! We really enjoyed being able to see features of canals that we have been learning about and even got to see lots of barges going through the lock. The best part was helping to operate the lock to let the boats through! We have been writing persuasive letters for our hot tasks in English and learning all about different 2D and 3D shapes in maths. In history, we learnt about Egyptian gods.

Next week, we will be consolidating all of our learning in lots of fun and exciting activities.

Year 3/4 and Year 4

This week, we have been learning about shape and coordinates in Maths. We have also been revising the four operations. In English, we have been writing our last hot task of the year! This is a portal story with pupils being transported back to Roman times! We have been very impressed with the quality of the descriptions. In Reading, we have finished our class texts and reviewed the book. We also looked back at all of the books we have studied this year. We will be studying some poetry in the final week of term. We participated in sports day on Monday with a vast array of sporting talent on show. In Science, we have been learning about deforestation and the impact it has on biodiversity. Next Tuesday, we will be going on our trip to Lunt, Roman Fort. We would like some parent volunteers so if you are interested, please email the office or speak to Mr Read at the end of the school day.

Year 5:

This week in Year 5, we have had another busy and enjoyable week! In Spanish, we continued learning how to say and write dates, building our confidence with this important vocabulary. We also had a fantastic time taking part in Sports Day where everyone showed great enthusiasm, teamwork and determination in events such as the running races, the egg and spoon race and the hammer throw. In Maths, we recapped multiplication methods and encourage everyone to continue practising their times tables at home using TTRockStars to improve fluency. In English, we began planning a balanced argument about whether the Vikings were heroes or villains researching evidence online to help us develop well-reasoned arguments from both sides.
