Nursery:
This week we have been reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle. The children are learning to sequence the days of the week and recalling what the caterpillar ate each day. In Maths, we have been learning all about the number 6 and have introduced the tens frame. Don't forget to show the value of 6 in different ways on your tens frame at home. We have been very creative making our own very hungry caterpillars to continue our learning of the lifecycle of a butterfly next week.
Reception:
This week reception has been learning about the Three Little Pigs. We really enjoyed designing a new house for the little pigs and talking about its features. We have also made pig masks and have had fun using these to retell the story in the small world. We have been practising our number bonds to 5 and 10 using Numicon and tens frames and counters to help us with our working out. We are starting to remember the facts - why don't you ask us! Finally, our beanstalks we planted last week are starting to grow, and we really can't wait to see what happens over the next few weeks!
Next week we will be continuing our learning on The Three Little Pigs where we are going to test different materials to see which would be the best to make a roof.
Year 1:
In Year 1 we have been looking at Holy Week in RE, which allowed us to explore events such as Palm Sunday and The Last Supper. We have role-played the events and spoke about the feelings experienced throughout. In English, we started a new class text, 'Dogger' where we have explored the story through a text map. As a class, we thought of actions to go alongside the text. In History, we have been exploring our significant people's unit with a strong focus on Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We were surprised to find out she was from Jamaica. It was also interesting to find out that they were both treated differently.
Year 2:
This week, we have been busy writing our Hot Task - a diary entry as Neil Armstrong! The children used some excellent vocabulary that they had been learning through English and their History lessons. In Maths, we have been learning about mass, volume, capacity and temperature. In RE, we learnt about the story of Palm Sunday, as we begin to approach Holy Week. We also finished our Andy Warhol pop art prints this week, where the children carved their design into a foam board and used rollers and paint to print into their sketchbooks; they looked amazing! Next week, we are moving onto Fractions in Maths, and learning about the Suffragettes in History and in our English lessons. It is also DT Project Week, and we are sewing a pouch for Christopher Columbus!
Year 3:
In year 3 this week we have combined our writing, reading and RE knowledge to begin to create our own graphic novels about Holy Week. We have based these on the book 'The Third Day', alongside our learning during Easter play rehearsals and in Bible readings. In Maths, we are continuing work on fractions, this time looking at how we add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. In Science, we have started our new topic on magnets and forces. Next week we are looking forward to another DT topic and to welcome you all to our Easter play performances.
Year 4:
This week we have been working super hard at rehearsing the Easter play, and we can't wait to perform for parents and other visitors next week. In Maths, we have been securing our knowledge on mixed numbers and improper fractions, and we have also started to look at equivalent fractions on a number line. In Science, we made our own string telephones to investigate how sound travels over a distance and how we can make it easier to hear our friends when we were further away.
In Maths next week, we will be looking at adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. It is also DT week next week, and we cannot wait to put all the skills that we have learnt so far into action.
Year 5:
This week we have finished our Anglo -Saxon legends. They were jam-packed with great vocabulary and figurative language and Mr Quinn and Mrs Lodge have really enjoyed reading them. We also wrote some Kennings this week and read them to the class so that they could guess what they were about. On Friday, we had fun writing mini sagas inspired by the Viking Gods. In RE, we wrote our own letters in the style of Saint Paul. We also explored the Sacrament of Reconciliation. In Maths, we have been studying area and perimeter, which is often something pupils mix up – not in Year 5 after this week! We have reasoned with compound shapes. In Science, we learnt about Sir Isaac Newton and gravity. We used newton meters to measure weight and explored how weight and mass are different things. In History, we learnt about the differences and similarities in the lives Anglo-Saxons and Vikings experienced in Britain. Next week, in Maths, we will be studying line graphs and timetables. In RE, we will begin to study Holy Week.
Year 6:
This week Year 6 have been very busy. In English, we have started writing our own scary stories. In Maths, we have been looking at shape, perimeter and area. The children who were being confirmed met Bishop Stephen and spent time with him learning more about the importance of the Sacrament of Confirmation. In Reading, we wrote and performed our own sea shanties. In History, we studied Queen Victoria and art we continued looking at the work of Morris. Next week we are looking at angles and protractors in Maths.
