Nursery :
It was so lovely to welcome everyone back after the Easter break. We started our week with revisiting Holy Week and continued with the Easter story. We have completed lots of activities focused on Easter, made Easter cards and gardens to celebrate ‘He is risen’.
Maths this week has been sequencing events in stories and rhymes and also drawing on our own life experiences using the language ‘first’, ‘next’, ‘then’ and ‘finally’.
Next week we will begin our summer term topic of Teddy Bears.
Reception:
Reception have been very busy this week learning all about Easter. The children have impressed us with how much they have remembered about holy week and have taken part in class discussions about what happened and why we celebrate Easter. In Maths, we have started to look at numbers to 20 and representing them using lots of different equipment.
Year 1:
This week we have come back ready to learn about Easter. We have discussed how Jesus has risen and acted out the Easter story in RE. We discovered that Mary found the empty tomb that Sunday morning. Then we wrote a diary entry pretending to be her. In Geography, we have started a new topic, Warsaw Poland. Linking this in English, we have focused on Marie Curie and discovered she was responsible for radium. It was so interesting! The facts we have learnt will help us to write a fact file about her next week.
Year 2:
The children returned to school full of energy and with fantastic attitudes to learning; we have been able to really hit the ground running at the start of our busy term this term. We have begun our new book in English 'Somebody Swallowed Stanley', the story of a plastic bag in the ocean. We have enjoyed being magpies and picking out the excellent vocabulary the book has! In Maths, we are continuing with fractions, but next week plan to move on to 'Time', so any extra practise surrounding this at home is much appreciated! In RE, we have looked at the Resurrection of Jesus and thought about how the disciples may have felt. In PE, we are starting Gymnastics indoors and 'Run, Jump, Throw' outside. In Science, we have planted sunflowers this week! We have looked at what a plant needs to survive and hope that our sunflowers will grow lovely and tall in our classrooms over the next few weeks! Many thanks for the support provided with the SATs practise booklets over the holidays.
Year 3:
Year 3 have had a great week back following the Easter holidays. In Maths, we have started our net topic on time. We are looking at telling the time to the exact minute so any help on this at home will be greatly appreciated. In English, we have continued to read the book 'The Third Day'. In RE, we have been learning about the events following the resurrection of Jesus. In History, we had a brilliant chat all about the work of archaeologists and how we can find out information about events from the past.
Year 4:
We hope you had a lovely Easter and spent quality time with your family. This week, we have really enjoyed getting back to our Hercules topic in English, creating our own mythical creature and writing a setting description to describe where our mythical creature lives. In Maths, we have been adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers, and we have been really pleased with how well the children have got stuck straight in with their hard work. In Geography, we started our new topic of 'Volcanoes and Italy,' where we investigated the structure of an earthquake and why they erupt.
Next week, we will be completing our topic on fractions in Maths and moving onto decimals. In English, we will be writing our hot task - A first-person narrative of Hercules' 13th labour.
Year 5:
This week has been jam-packed full of exciting new learning. We completed our statistics unit in Maths by looking at timetables and exploring how to use bus and train timetables - a vital life skill. In English, we have begun studying Shackleton's Journey by William Grill which links to our theme of explorers this half-term. We looked at the crew of the Endurance on their polar expedition and then wrote a CV/job application for a job on the ship which we wanted. In Reading, we have read the Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. In RE, we have been learning about the Passover, the Last Supper and how it links to the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Next week, we will be studying geometry with a focus on types of angles, measuring angles and regular and irregular shapes. Please continue to practise times tables at home as much as possible as sharp recall facts help enormously as we work through the Y5 curriculum. In English, we will be continuing to build up our creative writing skills by writing a polar diary from the Endurance with a grammar focus on possessive apostrophes and correct use of commas.
Year 6:
In Year 6 this week we have started a new piece of writing based in the Victorian Era. In Reading, we have started to practise reading and answering questions about different types of books. In Maths, we are practising arithmetic, shape and direction. In RE, we have looked at the events that happened after the crucifixion. In PE, we have started TAG-Rugby and, in Art, we have started looking at the work of Henri Rousseau. Please help your child prepare for SATs by reminding them to practise reading every day; Spelling some of the Year 5/Year 6 words in their Reading journal; Practising, knowing by heart, their Fraction, Decimal and Percentage equivalents.
