Dear Parents/Carers,
We have rounded off this half term with another super DT week. There have been a wide range of projects taking place across school including the designing and making of working lighthouses in Year 6 and designing and making healthy pizzas in Year 4. The children have also been thinking about care of the planet for Laudato Si week. Ask your child about the small changes they have pledged to make to care for our common home. This afternoon, representatives from across teh school have been making and painting wooden crosses, using recycled wood from our school grounds. They will be displayed in our new prayer area next half term.
We break up today for half term and we look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 5th June. I wish you all a wonderful week.
Mrs Sherratt
Nursery:
We have been sharing the book 'Goldilocks and the Three bears', a book which many of the children were familiar with so this led to them talking about what happened, sequencing the events and discussing how we would feel if we were one of the characters. The children also thoroughly enjoyed acting out the story and making story maps. In Maths, we have been all about capacity, filling and emptying containers, particularly water as we enjoyed the lovely weather outdoors.
Wishing you all a lovely half-term break.
Reception:
This week Reception have been using their maths knowledge to solve missing number problems! The children have impressed us by using number facts to find the answers and have been able to show the problem using objects. In RE, we have continued our learning about Pentecost and have demonstrated a great understanding of what happened.
Year 1:
This week we have been innovating the story of The King's Pants. We have thought carefully about the beginning, middle and end, but also made sure it is filled with lots of interesting adjectives. We looked over our story and edited, making sure we had the correct punctuation. In Maths, we have been looking at money, and we have counted and recognised coins and notes. We have really enjoyed DT project week, when we made a moving birthday card with a slider or lever. It was fun making it move.
Year 2:
This week, we have been finishing off our SATs tests. We are all so proud of the hard work and perseverance that the children have displayed! Well done Year 2! We have also continued our learning about Pentecost, we have thought carefully about how the Holy Spirit guides and supports us and others. In Geography, we have thought about beaches and coastlines and created our own posters about how to stay safe on a beach.
After half-term, we will be moving onto our new topic of 'Castles and Kingdoms.' We will also be continuing our Maths topic of statistics and then moving onto position and direction.
Year 3:
Year 3 have enjoyed DT this week, when we have combined our Geography topic on canals with creating our very own canal barges that light up! The finished projects look fantastic! In PE, we have continued to work on our cricket skills, focussing on batting this week. In English, we are working on persuasive writing, we have written a speech convincing our teachers that we should not have to wear school uniform and are also writing a formal letter to Mrs Sherratt in order to make break times longer.
Year 4:
We have had a brilliant DT week creating our pizzas. The topping variety and designs were brilliant (we really should open our own restaurant). During Maths we have used money to answer a variety of questions. Our knowledge of decimals was really helpful when solving problems involving pounds and pence. In English, we have written our own Haikus. We have completed our artwork this week and have drawn some great pieces inspired by Leonardo DaVinci.
When we return after the half-term holiday, we will be taking the multiplication check. It is essential that you are practising times tables every day. Please use TTRockSTars and timestables.co.uk to support you.
Year 5:
This week has been as busy as ever! In Maths, we have started our new decimals unit and have been using place value counters to really explore and understand decimal place value, which then allows us to work with decimals using the four main operations. We will be continuing with this unit after half-term. In English, we have been writing our hot task - a diary entry from a stowaway on an Antarctic expedition which goes wrong. Pupils have been very excited about using an impact strip which is a tool we use to help pupils write with their audience in mind. This has helped pupils develop sophisticated vocabulary choices and hooks to ensure their writing is engaging throughout. Next half-term, we will be studying the Norman Invasion of England and will be basing our writing around this theme. In Reading, we have continued with Kensuke's Kingdom and have enjoyed exploring the changing dynamic between Kensuke and Michael. We will be continuing with this book after half-term. In RE, we studied the Ascension and explored the emotions of Jesus' followers as they watched him return to his Father in heaven. Next, we will be learning about Pentecost and the impact the Holy Spirit had on the lives of the Apostles. In DT, we have been sewing and making our very own wallets. Mr Quinn, Mrs Lodge, Miss Furniss and Miss Dixey were extremely impressed with the sewing skills on show. All pupils have shown patience, creativity and resilience to create some superb work.
Year 5A are saying goodbye to Miss Dixey as she returns to university to compete her teacher training next year . We thank her for all her hard work and excellent lessons this year.
Year 6:
This week we have been designing our own theme parks in Maths. We have designed our own roller-coasters, park blueprints and tickets. In English, we have finished our persuasive writing about living a sustainable life and making ethic food choices. In Geography, we have continued our Brazil topic, and we have learnt about the layers of the rainforest and how we use the rainforest to our advantage. Some of us have begun visiting our new secondary schools this week for our transition days which has been very exciting!
