Nursery:
In Nursery, the children have been listening to the story of ‘The Rainbow Fish’, a story about a fish that wouldn’t share his shiny scales with his friends. Lots of discussions have been had around friendships. We have linked this to our Catholic Life theme for this term, ‘Created to love Others’. We have talked about families, friends and people we trust, and how we can resolve our differences looking to Jesus as our role model.
Reception:
This week reception have been comparing the rainforests in Australia and to forests in England. We have been comparing the different animals we would find and have created our own forests and rainforests using sponge painting to create the leaves on our trees and sticking on the correct animals. In RE, we have been looking at the features of a church and why they are important. The children have amazed us in Maths, with their quick recall of their number bonds and problem-solving skills!
Year 1:
This week we have been writing a newspaper report about the lost toys in the museum. We have remembered all the features of a newspaper report and made sure our heading was eye catching. In Maths, we have started a new unit of 'Time', where we have been working hard to understand the days of the week and months of the year. Why don't you try to chant the months of the year?
We finished our week off with a trip to Rosliston Forestry Centre, where we learnt so much about trees, plants and seasons. Check out our Facebook page for some pictures of the trip...
Year 2:
We have been having a look at villains in English this week - in particular the Big Bad Wolf and the Enchantress from Rapunzel! We are planning to write a non-chronological report based on a villain so have been generating some exciting vocabulary linked to fairytales. In Maths, we are recapping multiplication and division and are particularly focusing on dividing by 2, 10 and 5 this week. We are also having a push on times tables, so extra practise at home would be appreciated. In History, we have continued to learn about life in a castle and planning what we would eat at a castle banquet! In RE, we are looking at how to be more like St Peter and St Paul in our faith.
Year 3:
This week in year 3, we have started a new book in English titled 'The Secret of Black Rock'. Using this we are going to be writing a newspaper report. In Reading, we are continuing our work based on 'The Iron Man', we are really enjoying this exciting book. In Maths, we are finishing off our topic about statistics. This week we have been drawing tally charts, pictograms and bar charts. In History, we have started our new topic all about the Industrial Revolution.
Year 4:
We have been using our persuasive writing skills to write a letter to Mrs Sherratt to persuade her to allow us to have a class fish. We used rhetorical questions and emotive language. Hopefully we have been successful and we will get our pet! We have explored shape in maths this week. We have looked at different quadrilaterals and know the key characteristics. In addition to this, we have investigated symmetry.
During history, we researched Hadrian's wall. Did you know that it was 15000 men around 6 years to build? We had a brilliant time during our tennis session. We learnt forehand, backhand and how to serve. We completed our mosaics in art, which were inspired by Antoni Gaudi.
Year 5:
This week in Maths, we have explored the concept of zero pairs as part of our negative numbers topic. Next week, we will be learning how to convert units of measurement. Please quiz your children on the conversion rates regularly to keep it fresh in their memory. In Reading, we have been writing a back story for one of the characters in our book. In RE, we are learning about the work of the Apostles. The highlight of this week was our Geography-based trip to Dovedale in the Peak District. All the children completed the challenging hike to the summit, and we were super proud of them for showing resilience and determination. We also conducted some map-based fieldwork while we were there.
Year 6:
This week in Year 6 we have been busy continuing with our performance practises. Some of us have been out on a transition day at John Taylor Free School. We have been practising tennis and rounders in PE. In Spanish, we have finished our work on going to a café and asking for food. In Art, we have designed a miniature sculpture.
